Hello & welcome to the forum, there are some good people here. A friend of mine bought a McCullogh & shortly after he experienced a problem with it & they refused to honour under the warranty. If it were me, Id consider either a Stihl 181 or a Husky 135. Avoid the gimmicky stuff like 'easy start', a small engine is easy enough to start anyway. Get a 12" or a 14" bar, the shorter the bar the less resistance on the engine so the quicker it will cut. Learn how to maintain your saw, use good oil for bar & 2 stroke, keep it sharp & look after it & it will give good service. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here (like Spud, Felix etc) who know more than I ever will but this is my personal opinion, I have both Stilh & Husky saws and like both marques - in different ways! Hi, I bought 365xp 70cc with 20" bar from FR Jones for just over £500 recently I cant think of one reason why you would buy from E-bay as opposed to supporting a really first class dealer & thats an opinion shared by many on Arbtalk not just mine. Hi From my perspective: When you rely on your computer to make a living as I do, you use the best, price become a lot less relevant. If Microsoft was any good, Id use it, but it isnt its too problematical, insecure & becomes very expensive when you have to faff around endlessy trawling forums to discover some update has rendered an important program useless, as opposed to making money. Long term Apple becomes a lot less expensive, my Mac Pro is 8 soon and runs like a dream. However, I must admit to have earned a reasonable living out of all this but Id be somewhat poor if everyone used Apple as Ive only fixed one in over 15 years! All the best & that said, I really do hope Windows 9/Threshold works out for MS as the future looks a lot brighter post Ballmer/Sinofsky. N

Hi, I see your point, the ad is somewhat '70s. As a rather tacky graphic I find it inappropriate as opposed to offensive. Im not a very 'politically correct' person in general but I can see that some people would consider it offensive. But if it funds then site then fine. IMO N

Hi I would ask for the serial number, I think the first digits are the year made but Im sure a fair few know how to read the serial no code. Is it a private sale or dealer? If its private be extra careful, as there are Chinese copies around. If its an e-bay link post here so it can be checked N

Hi The 260 is a greet saw, check it over, sharpen up the chain & use it every day. I have one with a 16" bar, bit of an old one but very good. The bit about keeping it 10 years made me smile, thats the sort of thing to do with a nice Bordeaux or Burgundy! Ah the 2010 vintage Stihl 260? a quintessentially good year for Stihl with a slightly wet summer, produces a very pleasant bouquet of 2 stroke when revved... N

Hi You cannot compare the two really, as pointed out by WYK, but depends what you want the saw for. The 365 has 65cc in its 'special' version or 70cc latterly & a pro saw, the 290 is pitched more at land owners, with smaller engine of 55cc so bit small for 20" bar - a 16" bar would be better IMO. I have the later 365xt & its very good running a 20" bar. 365 v 390 would be a fairer comparison both seem good to me but I would pick the 365 - more of a pro saw. N

Hello all, Right, I have something that may help. Firstly being older than most of you, I need +1 reading glasses, therefore its sometimes easy to miss out minor detail when not. There is a very small triangle adjacent to where you line up the black part of the cap, but not very obvious. So I take a black permanent marker pen & mark on the casing where the black part of the cap should be to assist correct line up. Having done that, the fuel one is still by far the easiest. The oil is less fiddly than before ( they are genuine Stihl caps) but still slightly tricky. But the gathering of sawdust in the many nooks & crannies remains. So the problem is less bad as opposed to fixed, Id swap them for screw in bungs any-day & any future saws wont have them for sure. There are 2 things that finalise a buying decision: 1. The price is right 2. It makes sense Bourne out by the fact I bought my MacBook Pro from Dixons (they send a shudder down my spine as retailers go) because it was reduced by £175 & fantastic deal. Now that dosnt mean to say Im going to get told to Foxtrot Oscar when I take it into a different Apple dealer for service? (run like a dream for 3 years, so unlikely) Yes, I appreciate the dealer loyalty, but sometimes you just want it sorted, fixed, replaced, repaired above all working & if you get good service then youre going to think Ill use them again. All Mr Richard Cranium did was shoot a hole in the foot of his employer because he chose to stay the party line as opposed to allow his colleague to assist & potentially win a customer. N

Hi 100% Agreed, unfortunately Mr Richard Cranium (I think you'll know what I mean here) should have wound his neck in & not entered into the fray as Mr Sensible was dealing with it very well. You have every right to go to the dealer with the best price & I can see right where Mr Sensible is coming from with the "OK, so you diddnt buy from us, but maybe some help may convince you to shop with us in future" I used to work in a technical support environment & was always amazed how a little gratitude would be returned in future sales. I accept that margins have to be made so some dealers will be more expensive on some items than others, but what Mr Cranium dosnt realise its 10 times easier to loose a customer than it is to gain one & when that happens, guess what? The customer tells everyone their bad experience. Mail this thread to his boss as I guess there wont be a lot of sympathy here! N

Hi, I absolutely agree 100% & yes, despite observing the damm thing under a magnifying glass after the first load of oil down my trousers to learn the inner workings of this ill spawned thing, today I once again have to fiddle with it ... Yes, I understand fully how it works, No it isnt a Chinese copy but wonder if they produce ones that work No the tank isnt full, as I always like to leave an air gap & being an engineer of sorts Im quite dexterous & my hands wernt cold If this design was any good, it would be copied far & wide like the fuel filler for a vehicle, but its not. Im not buying anything else with that design of cap. N

Hi all, Once again the clowns in downing st work out a way to shaft joe public as the seller would loose the latter half of the months tax & the buyer would pay for the first part of the month. I can imagine a lot of sales taking part at midnight end of month. In France its slightly different, duty is paid when a vehicle is registered but there is no vehicle excise duty annually There are two stickers in the screen, one for CT which is same as MOT & one for insurance, but its the car thats insured as opposed to the person who drives it, which makes sense to me. N

Hi, Try as I may to get these things to work every time I fit them, they dont. Its not only the fiddly bit to get the bung in but the fact they have a myriad of crevices which harbour sawdust, all of which is destined for the tank. Just what was wrong with a screw in bung, to change it for this? To be honest, If I could get a plastic cork to fit properly, Id rather use that. Its like they actually want your oil/fuel tank to fill with sawdust. Until now I thought the only company capable of ruining a good idea was Microsoft, but no Stihl, you run them a very close second. I would enjoy using my saw a whole lot more, had the spotty faced geek you let loose in your design department on that fateful day when all sense departed, had never been born. </rant> So my next saw will probably be another Husqvarna N

<p>I value your comments on the bearing & yes, cant go wrong if changed annually, I look out for chips or sawdust contamination, as its fairly easy to dismantle. I try and avoid over tightening the chain as that would stress it & I can see how twine could easily get caught up as well, so one to avoid - thanks!</p>

<p>I also find Castrol LM grease is fine, as you say its also used for vehicle wheel bearings so plenty good enough.</p>

Hi sorry to hear your bad experience Ebay & Paypal have a very nasty habit of siding with buyers. I like lots of other people dont use Ebay anymore, too many scammers, sounds like he used you like a free hire company - the barsteward. N
