  1. Alright guys, just wanted to pick your brains about how you got into milling.. As it's something I'm interested in, but don't really know how to approach. I'm a tree surgeon by trade, but would would like to offer (mobile) milling as a service at some point, and an also interested in joinery also. What's the best way to get a bit of insight? Offering to do a bit of work experience for someone? Thanks!
  2. Yeah they are about 20 mins from me - though I think I'll wait and see what comes up before contacting them That's good news though - thanks!
  3. Never! But am definitely keen to! What do you mean by legging?
  4. Well that's a positive response yep I can see I'll be traveling a bit more to find work, that's OK though. To be fair I've only seen a few guys in Bristol being paid more than £110a day... I would rather have a lower day rate and (hopefully) be more flexible secure more work, than the opposite.
  5. Thanks mate - I'm hoping to try and subby for around £100 day rate. 3 years exp, 2 years climbing - own climbing kit, saws, ppe, etc. Do you think that's too much?? Thanks
  6. I've just moved down from Bristol and will be looking to fill my diary from the end of June! I've got 3 years experience in the industry; - Level 2 qualified (RFS) - CS 30/31/38/39/Chipper - Climbing kit - Ground saw + climbing saw (261+200t) - Full clean licence - Experience in rigging using a capstan + block - Experience in take downs of all sizes - Experience in reductions of all sizes - Fairly competent tree identification + Latin naming - Willing to travel up to 40 miles from Moretonhampstead I am also interested in forestry and milling and would like the opportunity to gain some experience in these areas I'm keen to see the area and meet like minded people! References available Contact Max on 07837289802 Thanks!
  7. Hey all, have just moved to Devon from Bristol, mortonhampstead in Dartmoor national park. I've not secured anything work wise down here yet, but was wondering what to expect? Is there a difference in pay etc? Just want the down low from some locals really! Listening to sheep instead of cars is nice!
  8. I think the website is arborisk.co.uk mate
  9. Hey everyone, I'm going back to being self employed at the end of next week and am on the hunt for public liability insurance as well as personal, including extreme sports. Can anyone reccomend a company who offers such a package? So far I have found that tree surgeon insurance.co.uk offer all of the above, has anyone dealt with them? Arborisk look like a good company to deal with but I'm not sure they cover extreme sports. Any other recommendations? Thanks!
  10. okay so bearing in mind the alps part of the trip i've started focusing more on my hill climbing stamina and technique... thank god i chose tree work - definately helps with the fitness side of things!
  11. Hey all, The guy i work with has a newish 576, and whenever it's in the middle of a big cut it looses revs and power, and will cut out if you take your finger off the throttle.. performs fine otherwise... it has been bumped and repaired already, top casing and air filter were damaged. I'm just wondering wether anyone else has problems with the autotune x-torq thing, or wether its a mechanical fault.... Thanks!
  12. Thanks for the replies! to be honest i hadn't even thought about chafe - although that will definitely be a problem - so thanks for the advice! I was actually thinking the health side of things. I tend to cramp up towards the end of hotter (or more strenuous) days. And i would like to get a bit better at the longer climbs... I think its going to be a case of making the effort to get out in the evenings and weekends and smashing out a load of climbs...
  13. evening! i've got a 700km trip coming up in 8 weeks from Rimini (Italy) to Munich, was just wondering if anyone here had done anything similar and what they had done to prepare for it? It's going to be spread over 2 weeks, so about 60km a day. thanks!
  14. looks like there is no clear path - but tree work definitely gives you plenty of options!
  15. i think about this a lot as well. just as progression appeals to me - i guess it depends on the life stile you want to live also? - ecology side of things maybe? wild life surveys - some sort of green oak joinery or just carpentry/joinery in general - as already mentioned assessor/teacher/T.O/surveying work.. - design and patent some useful arb kit (that no one else has thought of obvs..) just a few things off the top of my head! get an old fighter jet and some napalm, set about ridding the uk of its conifer hedges the world is your oyster mate

  17. Thanks for the replies ! Ended up spending most of today getting to southampton and back, managed to get my hands on a caddy sdi. fairly tidy condition, Years MOT, FSH, 118k. A bit of rust coming through on the rear arches but everything else looks nice. only cost 500 notes, will sit at 70 nicely! fuel gauge barely moved on the way home (my last car was a V6 golf so this is nice). Going to get the cam belt changed, serviced and go from there. thanks for the replies guys
  18. yeah haven't got shed loads to spend! I've been keeping an eye on the dispatch models as well.
  19. morning! We (me and my girlfriend) are going to be moving to devon at the beginning of june, so i need a small van that will fit me + arb kit, surfboards etc and have enough space to kip in overnight... I've been looking at escort vans, although they are apparently slow as hell (though I'm not bothered as long as it will do 70 on the M-way) and have rust problems.. not that interested in the newer common rail diesels as they look as though they are an expensive fix when they go wrong... anyone got any ideas? thanks!
  20. and stihl 150's! Compression straps sound well interesting - think ill get some of those ordered!
  21. Hey all, Just been doing a bit of research into the pain i sometimes get on the insides of both elbows - known as golfers elbow. It seems tennis elbow is more common among arb guys (pain on the outside of the elbow). for me, its usually aggravated when i go bouldering and then things like ascending into a tree, picking up logs or wrenching on anything fire it up a bit more. It used to be much worse but i had 6 months off and that definitely helped. Does anyone here have similar problems? any tips/advice? heres some interesting info I've found so far...
