  1. realistically if you go free lance you will probably find yourself working with the same handful of tree surgeons. depending on your current overheads and ability, if you set yourself a decent day rate you can be flexible - 3 days one week, 5 the next for example.... it is doable, and definitely worth doing - but you may find people less willing to invest their time in you as a subby, which is worth noting. make sure you have some cash in the bank !
  2. go at a day rate of 450 and work it out from there. i find it easier to work out how much time i might spend on a job in comparison to what the job may be worth. if you don't have a chipper i wouldn't charge for the extra time taken to get rid of the arisings... hope this helps!
  3. seriously though, respect for one another and a mutual appreciation for well organised and efficient tree cutting goes a long way!
  4. thou shall not be an aggressive f*ckwit when in the tree trees do seem to be able to bring the worst out in some people I'm sure of it
  5. yeah i usually have a couple of layers spare that i change into when I've got a minute! or put on the army surplus stuff if it looks like its set in for the day.. it just occurred to me that there doesn't really seem to be anything up to the task - big ask i know!
  6. hey all, just wondering who actually uses waterproofs? i tend not to, because I've never had any that actually work properly! i end up getting annoyed with the restricted movement and how cumbersome they can feel... I've also noticed a lot of other arbs are that way inclined. can anyone recommend any waterproofs which are also wind proof, durable, light weight, and breathable??? thanks !
  7. interesting I'm sure i was taught that pollarding a tree was a suitable means for reducing the spread of a root system, and that a lapse pollard can be dangerous for similar reasons.... still can't find any info to verify this though
  8. i thought that if you pollard, or reduce a tree's canopy it would maintain a root to shoot ratio - meaning that there would be die back of the root system, obvs species depending??? I've had a quick scan on the web and found nothing tho
  9. if in doubt just run a stronger mix ?
  10. thanks !
  11. Hi Steve, I had both of those on my iPhone - yet to install them on my android. greats apps, though and its good that they are available for both types of device, just struggling to find any tree ID ones! ta
  12. Hi Arbtalk! as above really.. had two great id apps on my iPhone simply called Tree ID and Winter Tree ID. Now i have an android phone and was wondering if there is any similar type of app about? thanks !
  13. thanks !
  14. Hi arbpeople! I've got an interview coming up with hi line. As far as i'm aware they predominantly do line clearance, but thats all i know. can anyone shed any light on what they are like to work for as a company? do they do any other type of work other than line clearance? The idea for me is to get some serious time in climbing. But i feel slightly unsure as i've never been drawn to working with trees in that manor.. any insight/advice would be appreciated

  17. Hi! I've been self employed for around 1 year, but have been doing tree work for 2 years(ish). 95 percent of the time i work as a subby. the other 5 percent are very small jobs, as i don't own a chipper/truck etc. So which type of insurance should i go for? the minimum being personal insurance. I have been quoted 17 pounds a month by a company called tree surgeon insurance for personal insurance which covers me at work, and also at home. my expenses per month are around 500 and this is covered by that potential policy also, But I'm reading that some of you are paying 600 pa on PL insurance, assuming that has personal included, so would it be worth getting a quote for that as well ? thanks !
