Local saw mill to me are having trouble sourcing Douglas saw logs, so have asked if can supply a couple of lorry loads from my woods. Just need to work out a price.

I know any timber sales from commercial woodland is tax free, but does that apply to round timber sales only. Say for example i wanted to start selling products made from my timber which would be milled on site and made on site would i have to pay tax on any income generated ? If so could i have two businesses one selling round timber to the second that does the above, the second makes a small profit whilst its the selling of the timber to the second that generates the income ? Before i asked my accountant, thought i would ask here first.

As per title, i told a customer i would do the job but been to busy. Its a really scrappy / patchy hedge about 7ft tall, mostly elm with bare 1 inch stems and top regrowth from machine flailing. I don't think it will last another year without being layed, and looks bad as it is.

Emmsy, That Creosote smell is truly horrendous, makes your eyes sting, i will tell you how i know. In our unused end room we have a stove which is only lit when the weather is really cold, its lined and on an external wall. When lit the misses would let it slumber all the bloody time (the rows we had over this), anyway hours after it was lit the room was filled with toxic fumes and the only thing to do was to let it out and try again another day. When i took the time to investigate i found that slumbering it for years their was a deposit of creosote sticking to the liner that brushing would not remove, and the mix of condensation during no burn times and being on an outside wall would build up and when lit would soften the creosote this liquid would run down the inside of the flue and run out of a hole where the pipes join then run down the outside of the flue and build up on the top surface of the stove, the heat would then cook it and make the smell. You need to call in the sweep to do a camera inspection of the inside of the liner to check all is ok. Inspect the outside of the flue yourself to see if their is any sign of gunge escaping. We cured ours by opening all the windows and burn it hot for a few days. And urika she now runs all our stoves hot and never slumbers, we run two. Maybe the previous owner slumbered the stove and never burnt off the condensation that can build up if a flue is not used for a period of time, especially of an external wall. Do some research on Google as their is stuff on their about condensation in flues.

The smell you are getting, is it a Tary / Creasote type smell that stinks the room out so you have to open a window ? I know all about those !

As title, i brought this a year ago off a chap who replaced it with a pellet boiler, with the intension of using it, but i cannot see myself using it now so moving it on. yes i do dwell in the woods, cottage and workshops in the middle of 23 acres, once ancient wood cut down and replanted with Douglas 50 years ago, owned by FC then i purchased 10 years ago. Restoring it slowly, when you have to earn a living it takes time. Big J did a lot of thinning / clear fell earlier in the year.

Why don't you sell your timber to the firewood guy's unprocessed and let them do all the hard work ? Most end users won't know a quality log and won't know it came from you ! Great thread by the way !

For painted windows look into using Linseed Oil paint, modern paints are really useless. Google it and do your research. Kiln dried Sapele will move around a lot so beware, iv'e been back to doors and windows 3 times where they have expanded and stuck in the frames.

I remove all the expensive stuff from my van at night, all thats left inside is general carpenters stuff value around £50 and leave it unlocked. I would rather have them open up and take that than have to fork out hundreds to have doors replaced. I used to have the workshop alarmed but after several 2 in the morning false alarms i disarmed it, living where i do in the middle of a wood and 1/2 a mile from road or neighbour i thought going out to investigate was crazy, what would i do if i came face to face with a thief who would not think twice about putting me in hospital.

As title just trying to find out what to charge for this load of 40 cube of softwood roadside. 3/4 Spruce / 1/4 Douglas all 3M lengths. East Devon with good access to A30. Have a buyer lined up for this load but lots more to come out, if anyone interested let me know.

Yes agree not that helpful, science is what you need to convince the customer. The problem is that a lot of people don't burn hot enough and that is what causes the problems with tar in the flue. The only way to tell if you are burning correctly is with a flue thermometer, I will explain this when delivering logs to a new customer. The number of times i have been working in a customers house and the woodburner is slumbering all day and night, and again having to tell them how this is bad practice.

Run mine off a vintage MF65 (don't know the rpm) for the last 20 years do about 12cube a year no problems. Good idea to run some string to the kill switch just incase of any problems. Usually know when its going to flip, happens very rarely.

A'm i doing something wrong ? On the old site everyday during breakfast i would check out today's posts which where set out with easy to see titles, i would hover over the title and it would tell me what it was about. If it looked interesting i would open it and follow the topic. With 1 click i'm reading the post. Now i have to go to " my activity streams " then to " today's posts " then " condensed ". Then scroll through the posts. I can't find out what the posts are about before opening and lots of the post are "so and so has replied to so and so's topic". I can see the need to keep updating a web site to keep up with mobile devices etc, but what was once enjoyable has now turned into frustration ! I'm getting the hang of the rest except for this !

Hi Roys Since posting i have found out they are available from the Country Stewardship Scheme and open to appplicants from October and close March the following year. Yes lots of paperwork involved. Just done a management plan for the F C and that was confusing enough. But hey ho every £1 is worth the trouble !

I think if the op just stated the problem and left it that this post would not have turned into a slagging match. He has a point, their are to many variables with buying logs, i get annoyed with adverts in our local papers saying " logs for sale large or small loads," WTF, state in the ad what a load is and price, if you where selling a car for example you would not put an ad in the paper saying "car for sale" you would put in a full description of what you where selling and the price. I sell logs and state 1cube softwood £50, mixed cube £60, 1 cube hardwood £70 loose fill cube, tip and go price. I also sell 1 cube branch material which i call odds and ends for £30. I have made up a 1cube crate that fits the back of my van and over fill to allow for settlement. The customer has a choice and know exactly how much it will cost. Its simple really. Yes their are lots of suppliers doing it right all around the country, but sorry chaps their are a lot who need to get their act together.
