1. Hi Big j. I could give you plenty of work with mobile milling, shame your not bringing your mill down with you, but not with extraction as a mate does all of mine, if that changes i will defo get in touch, Honiton area so close.
2. Run mine off a vintage MF65 (don't know the rpm) for the last 20 years do about 12cube a year no problems. Good idea to run some string to the kill switch just incase of any problems. Usually know when its going to flip, happens very rarely.
3. A'm i doing something wrong ? On the old site everyday during breakfast i would check out today's posts which where set out with easy to see titles, i would hover over the title and it would tell me what it was about. If it looked interesting i would open it and follow the topic. With 1 click i'm reading the post. Now i have to go to " my activity streams " then to " today's posts " then " condensed ". Then scroll through the posts. I can't find out what the posts are about before opening and lots of the post are "so and so has replied to so and so's topic". I can see the need to keep updating a web site to keep up with mobile devices etc, but what was once enjoyable has now turned into frustration ! I'm getting the hang of the rest except for this !
4. Hi Roys Since posting i have found out they are available from the Country Stewardship Scheme and open to appplicants from October and close March the following year. Yes lots of paperwork involved. Just done a management plan for the F C and that was confusing enough. But hey ho every £1 is worth the trouble !
5. Got lots of rodi in my woods Where to apply for a grant to clear ? What sort of money is available ? Thanks for any replies.
6. I think if the op just stated the problem and left it that this post would not have turned into a slagging match. He has a point, their are to many variables with buying logs, i get annoyed with adverts in our local papers saying " logs for sale large or small loads," WTF, state in the ad what a load is and price, if you where selling a car for example you would not put an ad in the paper saying "car for sale" you would put in a full description of what you where selling and the price. I sell logs and state 1cube softwood £50, mixed cube £60, 1 cube hardwood £70 loose fill cube, tip and go price. I also sell 1 cube branch material which i call odds and ends for £30. I have made up a 1cube crate that fits the back of my van and over fill to allow for settlement. The customer has a choice and know exactly how much it will cost. Its simple really. Yes their are lots of suppliers doing it right all around the country, but sorry chaps their are a lot who need to get their act together.
7. Here is a pic of my Massey 65, hauling some Douglas. Also run a cone splitter with it. Gets into some tight spots which it probably was not designed for.
8. I Have His book TREES & WOODLAND in the British landscape (revised edition) for sale £5 + £3.00 P&P. Hardback,in mint condition. If anyone interested, PM me.
9. Hi Chris, don't know what species, just call them scrub willows. Just up the road from you Stockland Hill, send PM if still interested.
10. Hi Chris, where in Somerset are you, or are you fixed up ? Taking down some willows this weekend East Devon.
11. Just had a woodmizer in for 1 1/2 days to saw up some of my own Douglas. £350 per day or £45 per hour plus £15 for every blade that needs sharpening. With a blade change every 3 - 4 logs it soon mounts up. You will also need some means of moving the logs or roll them downhill to the hydraulic lift. The main negative was the blade would wonder on the more knotty stuff or when needed changing, which if you are selling the finished boards may cause problems. We did 6x2, 4x2 masses of 5/8th cladding, 3/4 and 1 1/4 stuff plus 4x4 and 6x4 and to price up to buy in Tanalised softwood would be around £3,500 plus VAT so worth doing. We did 25 logs before cost wise had to stop with 25 logs left which the chap is having as part payment. As i see it running your own mobile mill is high maintenance with a limited customer base, so a lot of money tied up.
12. Also its very expensive on par with Oak when i had some for a door and frame. Quite brittle in texture and your planer knifes need to be sharp or you will have tear out when machining. But yes its supposed to do as it says on the tin.
13.

Hi tomm156

Did you get fixed up with firewood ?

15. Stolen from woods in East Devon saturday night 4th June. Not mine it belongs to a friend who unfortunately was in hospital after a tree he was cutting fell on him. Looks like more than a coincidence ! Anyone been offered one PM me. Thanks.
16. Just used some food safe oil from Axminster Power Tools on couple of Ash chopping boards iv'e just made, can't remember the make.
17. Thanks for the replies chaps. Will get some carbon filters to be on the safe side.
18. Fitting a new kitchen on a cottage refurb for a customer and the extractor is vented externally. Chap came and fitted the woodburner and said he could not sign it off unless we extract thro carbon filters as it was too close to extract thro the wall. Distance from woodburner to extractor about 10 foot. Never heard of this rule, is he correct ?
19. Hi Copford I have just resanded and reoiled our Iroko worktops after 10 years of use. It maybe the way you have oiled them as i have used the same products as yourself. I have fitted many solid worktops for my customers and had no problems. Firstly once the wood has been sanded i tip straight out of the bottle a puddle of the oil and with some kitchen paper spread this around to cover all the surface be careful about it running off the front edge ( put newspaper on the floor, to catch any drips). Then leave for about 10mins, then gently wipe off with kitchen paper any that has not soaked into the wood. Then leave to dry overnight. Repeat every 6 months. I called back to a customer who i made their bespoke kitchen that had Iroko tops and he had reoiled every 6 months for 15 years and it looked like glass !
20. Below are the pictures of the kiln. Surely it has got to be worth around £300. If someone had asked me to make the box, I would price it up at around £200, that leaves all of the electrics and the clamps for about £100. Sorry, didn't know how to rotate the pictures.
21. Hi Shendy, I will take some photo's tomorrow. Don't know what its worth, open to offers. East Devon
22. I a'm thinking about selling mine but don't know what to ask for it. All the electrical stuff is getting on a bit but the box i remade about 4 years ago. I last used it around 3 years ago to do a load of Douglas. The drying section is 3M long x 900mm wide x 1.2M high and the total length is 2.5M long x 1.4M high x 1.2M wide. The box is made from 2 inch insulated panels. Their is a clamping system inside using 6 C section irons top and bottom with 6 lorry straps, used to crank the the timber down tight to stop it twisting. Instruction manual included. Anyone interested !
23. Did a bit of day trading just after the recession when the stocks where low and made around £2000 a month, when work was quiet. You had to put a lot of time into it doing all the research, watching charts , pressing the button on spikes and getting out quick on falls. But as work got busier gave up day trading and brought for the long hall. We started off with £100K after selling a house and now its only worth £30K, took my eye off the ball but hey its only a loss if you sell. Lost £10K when Yell delisted and a couple of oily's have gone bust the rest have just slowly dropped and not worth selling, just hoping that by the time i retire they may give a return. All are high risk AIM shares and mostly oily's, the risk is when they drill and find nothing the share will drop like a lead ballon and when they find oil within minutes the share can triple then get out quick, bank the lot. My only advise is if you want to make a million on shares then start off with 2 million. Cos if your not careful your going to loose !
24. Hi All, did the Gorge 2 weeks ago, really nice day out. If you are going to do the 275 steps and the walk along the the top of the gorge well worth it but expensive, if you walk to the end of the walk up through the road you can do the walk in reverse and then down the steps and out without paying the £20. Fantastic views from the top takes about 2 1/2 hrs Also we did not know we had to pay for parking as we parked far up the road. If you do you have to walk down the road to the caves, pay and walk back up, a long way if you parked high up. Called into Burnam on sea for chips on the way home, don't buy them from the stall on the pier, they are crap, and the place is a dump.
