  1. Sucks compared to the book, I read it once and was moved, read it twice and thought chris mccandless was a tool! The film isn't entirely accurate to the book, but how many are?

Agreed , havent read the book but i felt he was a bit of a waster. A much better film could be made about Susan Butcher... like Chris arrived in Alaska with nothing but became a legend in her lifetime by winning the Iditarod sled dog race 3 times in a row , a tragic tale for those interested but a TRUE heroine..:001_smile:

  2. There's often more than one week in a month in Germany:biggrin:

When I go to work in euro-land I aim to make at least €250 a day. That's not in arb though, and all cash-in-hand as well.

Would you be looking to work there for some time, or a short burst?

2500 a month minus taxes sounds ok, but you'll probably pay 25% income tax, rent(?) council tax equivalent etc and you'll probably find your living costs somewhat inflated. If you have to rent accommodation in Berlin there will probably not be a lot left.

Is there not a network of Baumpfleger on the German interweb?

Ah that makes things easier  ......answers NO then

  3. For most people the climbing is just a natural progression from doing ground work . There are exeptions of course but some time groundying for a climber is the best way to approach things imo . The only advice on the course itself is to listen to what the instructor is telling you , simples....

  4. Rads is very simple, you have your single line with gri gri on, then above it a handled ascender, clipped into the top hole of the ascender a simple karabiner with pulley, the tail of the line goes from under the gri gri through the pulley. Attached to the bottom of the ascender is a foot loop you advance the ascender stand in the foot loop and pulling down on the tail of the line through the pulley will advance the gri gri.

It's a stand sit affair but allows you to both ascend and decend on a single line, particularly useful in pine trees and other situations.

It's also good for occasional srt access if you begin to use it a lot try to vary the leg you use as it can cause problems.

Thanks Marc, i had to draw that out on a piece of paper there but it seems a good little set-up , thanks alot

  5. in srt it would be used in rads, not a bad way to go if you want to get into srt for a bit also a base anchor for lowering a casulaty. or head down your local crag and taker some huge falls on it its a hoot.

Hvordan har du det jarnii ! could someone please tell me what the hell RADS is ?

Not planning on any huge falls either ! :thumbup1:

  6. ive used one at colage for a 3 man rescue, cnt think what else u could use it for

Thats good to know that colleges feel them worthy of use. Was the device attached to the casualties harness or was it used from the ground ?

  7. Hi everyone , I've ordered up a Gri Gri 2 rappell device as part of a small , extremely lightweight rappell set up for my wife when she works away for extended periods ( usually in high rise apartments in some countries with poor HSE records ). I was hoping to use this as an aerial rescue kit for my own tree work aswell. Is this a practical set-up or are there other uses which i can put it to use ? :001_smile:

  8. I would suggest if you are just going up for the odd hung up branch then you should consider moving to srt. Throw bag up as high as you can fix rope to base of tree and climb up the free end. Once your where you need to be, get the branch off and straight back down. Simple, easy and quick.

David , what knot or device do you use at the base of the tree for srt ?

  9. Try listening to a guy called Martin Taylor , he used to live locally to me. He plays gypsy jazz in the Django Rheinhardt style . He is of traveller descent ( Rheihardt was a Belgian gypsy and has an amazing story btw for those interested) and has played with the great Stefan Grapelli . :001_smile:
