  1. Would it be possible to burn it out? :001_smile:

Felix its interesting you say that , ive got two large dead beech stumps to remove and was thinking of doing just that but not sure of its effectiveness . I'm a bit of a pyro-maniac so it fits into my remit . Seriously though is this a viable course of action :001_smile:

  2. Thanks for the replies guys, i just wanted to double check i wasnt missing something important . The trouble is i'm finding youtube of not much use in showing or explaining this technique . The only one seems to be of an old fella struggling up a small tree and he is out of it by the time he is a decent height..its obvious he isnt doing this on a regular basis . Still it gave me an insight anyway. Thanks again chaps :001_smile:

  3. Hello guys / gals , need advice on exactly what kit i need to start trying RADS . I've got the gri gri 2 and have just purchased 10.5mm semi static rope . I'm assuming i still need a left hand ascender , right foot pantin or foot loop and small pulley. If someone could suggest a detailed set up that would be greatly appreciated , thanks.... :001_smile:

  4. I don't see any reason why you would want an 18" bar. Go for a 15" bar, which will be much easier (and safer) for your needs.

Agreed Morten , i used the 550xp for the first time today , it was supposed to come with an 18 but arrived with a 15 . I'm glad it did because the saw i feel is just too small and light for sustained 18 inch work . I cant speak for the 346 but i would be looking at the 60cc for consistent 18 inch work . :001_smile:

  5. 15 inch.. the salesman told me it was coming with an 18 inch bar but i'm not fussed tbh. The pick up is unreal compared with the older saws and much better power to weight . Its a tiny saw i must admit but it packs a mighty punch :001_smile:

  6. A terrible thing has just happend.

The missus just said "why don't you just buy a 346XP then?" :001_smile:

DONT!!!! I've just used my 550xp for the first time taking down a good sized cherry 20 mins ago. I couldnt feel the saw go through the wood , unreal !! The tree could have been made of thread for all it mattered . There the same price but ones the new kid on the block

  7. You can't beat a bit of Godzilla. :blushing:

Dont know if thats the same Blue Oyster Club i was thinking about but i think were on the same boat so to speak :laugh1: ( I'll just say right now that i categorically have not been in said establishment )

  8. I've just looked at your original post and it says you want to cut 12-13 inch logs for firewood . What makes you think a 40cc husky will struggle to do this ? Dont get roped into this ' semi pro ' thing meaning it cant cut big timber . If your a beginner the saw will probably outperform you ( dont take that as an insult ) .

  9. hi just went to look at my first hedge job. hedge is 40m long & 3m high do u guys think £160 is to little or to much for 2x men should only take a couple of hours any advice would b great. thanks jako

Sounds way way too cheap imo. 2 hours seems rushed to me aswell . You dont say how wide it is at the top ? that is the important bit that will determine how long / awkward the job will be . :001_smile:

  10. Because some would start charging to quote etc, then others wouldn't and make a BIG deal of not doing, then the ones who give free quotes, would get more calls.

Thats quite interesting you say that . I had a client last week i wouldnt say criticise but said my ad wasnt that good because i didnt have things like ' free quotation ' in it . I didnt really think stuff like that was that important nowadays but i've possibly been missing something here . :001_smile:

  11. We should all charge call out fees like electric/water people. That would stop at the time wasting.

Thats a very very good point Trad , Vets bills always have a call out charge whether they need to treat an animal or not , why should arborists be any different ? :001_smile:

  12. Pos , your story is very typical of many many arborists . Your situation was identical to mine and is identical to the guy i have teamed up with lately. You may not realise at the moment , but i bet you have learned much more than you realise from your dead end job that you can take into the arb industry. All the best :001_smile:

  13. Thanks guys,

Ive just had a quick ten mins on the knot guide and i think ill do just that geoff!!! I a bit of knot experince as im a caver but climbing techniques and some of the knots are a little different.

Thanks for the advice arborholic im not sure whether i can book my 38 until ive passed the 30 and 31 shame really as the waitng takes so long.

born2trot im now 30 i just wish i had gone to college and don't a relevant course and done this sooner! Heinsight eh:confused1:

    Ed

I thought as much because of your avatar but wanted to check just in case . I think you are at the perfect age to transition into a different sector . You are at an age where you have gathered up life experiences and common sense . Would you have been as serious about arb when you were 18 ? I know i wouldnt have and probably many others on here also . Are you going to bring out a college certificate when asked to dismantle a 100 ft poplar ? Hope you see where i'm coming from
