Onwards and upwards !

Hello everyone , i've put a few comments in now so better introduce myself.
I'm a qualified tree surgeon based in the north east of Scotland and a working/trotting horse enthusiast. I love the flora and fauna of the british countryside and always rootin about woods and forests etc so hopefully can come up with some interesting bits and bobs to contribute to this excellent forum.
-And get a laugh or two along the way-

You'd love aberdeen taupo , pitch black skies and crystal clear winter nights.
I tend to look at the stars in relation to the seasons as our anscestors did ( there is literally hundreds of iron age stone circles up here ) .
Orion is popping up late on in the night sky which means only one thing , cold , wintery weather is on the way.
Sorry I can't help you on the photography front but be sure and post any photos, I would love to see them

I thought you were going to say' a kidney stone ' there !!

Friend told me the other day there that his colleague nearly lost his eye as a result of a bungee strap. He has unfortunately lost his sight in the eye.
I'm getting rid of mine aswell.

Clutching at straws now, Lurid Bolete ?

Hygrophorus discoxanthus

Yellowing Woodwax ?

Guelder rose does well up here in N-east Scotland , its a most stunning sight in winter the berries hanging like jewels. Added bonus it provides late on berries for some bird species:thumbup1:

Brown Roll Rim ?

I brought one and used it on my 30/31 and I'm 62, as my old groundie helmet is a bit old so don't worry if it's new - it conforms thats it. My son also used it for his course being a bit hot he could leave the vents open. He also used it on his trial on hot days with a large gang of guys, nobody mentioned it.
Manup - this is tree work not 'the does my bum look big in this forum'
good luck
Lets get one thing clear here , PPE and health & safety is something I take very very seriously as does most people on this site.
Believe me Blazer if a newbie who has just sat cs30/31 turns up at an arb company ( as we all have done ) looking like robocop he'll be slaughtered .
I personally wouldn't participate in any berating of a new start and what I say is fact not a fashion statement as you suggest.
I agree with you it should always be safety first

Getting those tickets would be great but if you are struggling to get a start somewhere a good tactic wood be to get your chemical spraying / hand held Knapsack ticket.
The big utilities companies are always looking for sprayers come the spring and this could be the opening you need to get into the arb work.

It will burn really well and people who buy logs who really know their stuff wont be put of by the dark colour. Nice clean looking logs are often still green and wont burn or produce any heat.
thanks for that reply , I was just about to give it away because of its grubby look
-
I've stored 2 or 3 pallets of good quality split hardwoods under natural cover for two harsh winters in aberdeen and I must agree with skyhuck in that it hasn't done well irrespective of what some books may say.
I can't honestly say if it will burn better or not , i do not have a log burner but think it must only be worth half the value of nice clean looking logs.

' Beating up ' is just a planting term meaning going over the whole site and replacing dead trees that are normally in their infancy and you are correct in saying it is done by commercial enterprises.
you can buy ATV's now fitted with hydraulic or battery sprayers which would sound ideal for a smallholder like yourself. By the wording of your post it sounded if you were wanting to make life as easy for yourself as possible.
Not a bad idea in my opinion !
-
Can the whole site possibly be ring fenced and the tree guards removed enabling mechanical spraying ? You may have to accept a few losses initially but beating up will be necessary anyway .
-
If you can at least borrow a groundsmans helmet for the course I would be inclined to go for that , a climbers helmet at this stage I feel would be setting you up for some sort of ridicule , something that you could do without .
Get a proper helmet now and do things right from the beginning would be my advice.

I'm just home , Knackered , my arms scratched to buggery, been balancing on dodgy platform, have underpriced leylandii job again, had that ' youve only done that much look' from the owner ...vowed never to do this again,
But will as sure as night will follow day!

Watched the program tonight.
My wife and I felt there was a real lack of youth representation and input.
Very sad story though.

Sorry for the late post , I have just registered today.
If you have already bought a shire then thats all good but if not I couldn't recommend a Dales pony highly enough. I have owned and worked one for 8 years now and there is nothing that will faze him.
They will cost a fraction of the price to keep than your shire and are alot more versatile hence their name ' The Great Allrounder ' .
Charlie Parker from Yorkshire or the Dales Pony Society would be a good first port of call.
Again if breed is not important Jim Johnstone from Auldgirth, Dumfries would be a good bet for an Ardennes or something of that ilk , I'm sure Jim would be up for a haggle!
Anyway hope that may be of some help and I hope you find something suitable soon

There actually the easiest to climb and i always feel safe in them. As the other guys have said nice slender ladders gets you right up in there without damaging the tree.
