  1. Hi Wolfman, yes I'm interested in the Yew but I've just found out I need go to Greece on an emergency for a week as of tomorrow, so as much as I want the Yew I had better let it go. Thanks anyway.

    Regards

    Chris

  7. Hmm! Tough one, I don't envy you... Whatever you do though I wouldn't miss the chance to work in Norway for a month and if you need someone to carry your luggage, I bags first dibs:thumbup:
  8. He still is... Richard Head Longbows, 30 years of making fine longbows, Longbow Arrows and Traditional Archery Accessories. I have the book and the Ash blank but no time yet to invest in bow making:thumbdown:
  9. Whatever it is, long periods of using any vibrating equipment can cause long lasting damage. My local council has told it's workers they must not use vibrating equipment for longer than 40 minutes a day. that's not 40 mins on each type ie. 40 mins on a chainsaw and then 40 mins on a strimmer making 80. 40mins in total. Heat does help keep circulation going. I keep the heated grips going on my bike on most of the time except summer.

  13. Hi Predator, I recently had to tell my council I couldn't join their community helpers to shift snow because of the list of people I help including gardening, DIY, servicing cars as well as shifting snow. Just be aware of how much you are doing. We don't know or understand your situation although you have hinted... If you are eligible for and claiming benefits, depending on which you receive, you may be restricted to how much work you do per week paid or unpaid. Dont fret over this but if you dont already know what you are allowed to do, If you have an advisor, run what you do past them in confidence to have them check that all is ok. Maybe try Citizens Advice if not. It's a wonder we don't sink under all the red tape in this country. If I've got hold of the wrong end of the stick entirely I'll just shut my big fat gob:blushing: You sound like a really handy bloke, helpful, concerned and respectful of others. Whatever it is you are going through will have a life span and wont last forever. Well done:thumbup:

    All the best

  15. Hi, during my recent research, shipping containers and cheap have never appeared in the same sentence. The best you can hope for is someone wanting rid without realising the scrap value. Good luck in your quest, I gave up looking.
  16. I couldn't agree more with those promoting a course of any length. I would have a look at http://www.coppice-products.co.uk/ for your nearest provider. Safe use and tool preparation before getting started is important just like you have trained in other areas of your life. Books are great, I have many trees worth but working with someone in the know will help you move forward. I spent a small fortune on old tools before I found out what was what. Save your money by learning first before buying.
  17. Good stuff, the existing handle looks like it is off a trowell? What is the rest of the blade like? Harrison are a pretty good make, the one you have and this one... Item 1803 here Timeless tools Billhooks 1 are typical of hooks used when making besom brooms, the hook is used to lift branches off the ground and after the branches have been gathered and banded together, the shorter back blade is used to chop all the thicker ends to the same length before the handle is fitted. I've got a picture in a book of an old chap chopping on top of a short post, which I will post in the thread if I can find it.
  18. What make is it and does the tang go through the handle to be peened over a metal washer? There are really only two styles for older tools. See... "Tools and Devices of Coppice Craft" by F. Lambert Have a chat with Peter Wood, I'm sure he will only be too happy to help... Ferrers Centre for Arts and Crafts Mr Peter Wood

I've experienced them whilst mowing... Fever Fly (Dilophus febrilis)
  20. I supplied a cube of quartered mostly Oak and Birch for a 4hr party that used a log burner in the building, a fire pit outside with a further two brazier type burners. All the fires were lit before the party to get a bed of embers established and folks kept the fires going, with the pit and the log burner eating the most fuel. Just under half a cube left at the end. Charcoal was supplied by James [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6AfHjUIYv0]Hookway charcoal retort part 2 - YouTube[/ame]
  21. I may one day meet you as a fellow miserable civil servant haha Wore that T shirt out many moons ago. Ranmoor Hall Trainer Training & Resource Centre. 112 West St. B O and Hillsborough B O and J C. Not an experience I would like to repeat. When I had had enough, there was no half measures. I had a chat with the Area Manager, got nowhere so I wrote my notice out and left a month later. There's only so much a body & mind can take. It's a big and brave step to leave a well paid job (joke intended) that is somewhat secure, but it's going to happen some day. Why not sooner rather than later.
  22. Hi Ben, have you thought of having a chat with the forestry Commission. We're in the middle of two areas, so you could try both Forestry Commission - Forest Enterprise - Local Offices
  23. I would have a chemical analysis done to establish what you are dealing with. Drainage, Ph. Trees - Instant effect??? Species wise, what is their long term aim. Bio fuel, amenity woodland, justification of their advertised green credentials?
  24. I dont know but a wood turner would tear your arm off if you offered it. The figuring is probably stunning.
