  1. dont knock back the 20-25 hp chinese ones, they actually manufacture most of the "named" tractors on the market, and your paying a lot for the kubota name
  2. john, pm me Im only a few miles from cumnock I might be able to help
  3. well done rick, thats one awesome roof, you should be well proud of that
  4. nice choice, serve you well that one
  5. I believe its hitachi have now got a battery nail gun on the market now, better than a paslode cos you dont need the gas canisters, and its just as fast as a normal air one without the need for a compressor
  6. mines is similar to the blue one, but the other way round, Ie runs the boards right to left, plus has a secondary blade on the back for crosscutting, its in the middle of a comprehensive restoration as most of the wood is suffering from "old age" and having lived outside all of its life...lol
  7. unforntunatly not, I havent got any of it, but a google search will bring up a couple similar and theres a you tube of some here,...[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EMBHuWBkJ4&feature=player_detailpage]Steam Wood Sawing in Scotland - YouTube[/ame]........ the company that built it didnt build 2 the same, so every one is unique
  8. its the same with a lot of suppliers, if it looks like you know what your doing there not interested in tickets, and after a few times, your face is known

the scythe is a wonderfull tool, I cut many acres of thistles and docks in my youth, and as treewolf says the folk that can sharpen and use one are few and far between these days, I remember visiting one of the many country fairs come shows a few years ago and a "student" was explaining how to use a scythe, i couldnt help but laugh at his poor attempts, hacking lumps out would have been a better description !!!, he was most upset at me laughing at him, and the usual retort "supose you can do better then" brought about the reply " possibly, couldnt do any worse than your doing" at which point he handed me the scythe and a brand new stone, I amazed him by first setting the blade and handles to suit me, then sharpening it and taking a few swings cut a swathe across where he had been hacking, said to him " its not that difficult is it", laughed , handed him the kit back , and walked away laughing. Its not often you get a chance like that these days.
  13. Im asking because my foresian rack mill, built in the mid 50's clocks in at just over 2 ton, it has a steel girder chassis though, and a roof!
  14. depends on how its built, and when
  15. from almost white to almost red and everything inbetween, depends on soil, elements in ground, what its picked up in the water etc,
  16. your starting to catch on to the logosol idea, the hand winch on the m series mills gives you a great feel of what the saw is actually doing in the cut and you can adjust your winching speed to suit
  17. with only a years experiernce I would say your still a student!!, not a tree surgeon, and not an arborist, a lot more time on tools to go
  18. hiss down, an understatement, so wet we didnt stay long at all, even the donkeys in the field up the road were looking peed off..lol

    Tinnitus

have had it for years, a constant high pitched tone, years of exposure to fast jet noise and gunfire, I recently had a consultation with an audio technician specialising in the complaint and now have 2 white noise generators(bit like fancy hearing aids) to help me sleep at night....and surprise surprise, they work really well
  20. "As rupe says there is no legal requirement to have a specific qualification. BUT there is a legal requirment for you to be competant and suitably trained. " this has cropped up time and time again, a certain group of people have decided this must mean NPTC or similar IT DOES NOT, it means what it says and no more, if you are shown how to operate the equpment, and the person who shows you is satisfied you are competent, this fufills the legal requirements of PUWER and H&S law
  21. glad Ive got 2 of them then if the 261 is anything to go by
  22. so many factors affect how stresses occur in timber, ground conditions, prevelent winds, other trees in close proximity, disease, the normal trick is a close inspection of the rings to try and establish any signs, but in general till the first cut is completed you dont know, splitting the cant in half usually stops any problems, and Ive never had any quarter sawn move coming off the saw, but unless its a large bit of timber to start with , quarter sawn doesnt give very big boards. I try to alternate the sides when I cut from smaller bits and most of the time this makes the problem less pronounced
  23. once you find out how to stop it moving, let us all know, just when I think I've got it sussed, the next bit I mill does what it likes, lay it flat, sticker it well, and weight it down and hope it dries flat.......good luck
  24. going to be there, looking for a new splitter!
  25. when you connect it to water and sewage it ceases to be a portable structure and requires planning permission, so portaloo and a big jug for water, problem solved
