  1. My local vicar was the Rev D. Scrace.
  2. Which one is the scammer? The link just gets me to a load of firewood lots.
  3. Didn't chainsaws start out as humungous great things needing two men to operate?
  4. Going back to the OP: I'm still trying to work out how that would help you identify one in the field.
  5. Surely it's easier to move the cleaners' vehicles. If they complain afterwards, say what do they expect for parking across an exit?
  6. For me, there is the issue of all the materials and energy which went into manufacturing the item in the first place. If it lasts years and years, fair enough. If it lasts, say, two years rather than six, it effectively takes three times the materials and energy as the longer-lasting one.
  7. Ah, turns out it's just a brand name.

    Postage?

Two metres of rope is a piffling amount. The postage must have exceeded the value of it. Anyway, isn't there anywhere you could buy it over the counter?
  9. Looks like the Kiwis have the right attitude. When I was in Swindon a few years ago, a similar thing happened with a large shrub which shed a branch for no apparent reason. It narrowly missed a small child. The local rag went ballistic with no concern over just what would be involved if the local council actually checked every branch of every tree and shrub with the vigour they were demanding.
  10. Looks like a temporary electric fence is in order. Yet another thing to lug around, though.
  11. Well, it's in the wrong forum, as there is one for tree idents. And it's probably a hornbeam. And why the panicky tone and overuse of question marks?
  12. You have a teleporter? You could have sent it to the starship Enterprise, should make for an interesting plotline.
  13. Wrong forum, isn't it? Not much good for woodcraft by the sound of it.
  14. Er, yeah...what he said. That's a more comprehensive answer than I'd bargained for.
  15. The last two are lemon verbena, Aloysia triphylla. I think the second may be Haplopappus glutinosus (no common name) which has yellow daisy-like flowers in late summer.
  16. Interesting that it is the side nearest the road which has suffered, perhaps it's something to do with that. Salt spray from last winter, perhaps? It would be useful to know how long the tree has been showing signs of stress, especially as the foliage round the side looks healthy and vigorous. The ivy is a secondary thing; it will only swamp a tree which is already weakened by something else. Your diocese is bound to have someone who can advise on this, anyway.
  17. Nope.
  18. Surely a child trafficker would use hair dye to make the victim blend in, not stand out. Thanks GTR for the link to the genetic stuff.
  19. OK, here's one for all you intellectuals: What is the plural of 'octopus'?
  20. Gosh, that's some swelling! How many times was she stung?
  21. I hear the Irish girl was returned after DNA tests showed the couple actually were her parents. Now there's a similar case in Bulgaria. If you think about it, there is no reason for a dark-haired couple not to produce a blond child. It's impossible the other way about, though.
  22. In what way are they 'no risk'?
  23. Maybe another possibility is to have a branding iron made up and burn them that way, rather than all that fiddly pokerwork. Mind you, it'd be an incredibly intricate branding iron, so unless you could make it yourself, probably not cost-effective.
  24. You don't get those in the UK. Have you had any asian giant hornets round your part of France?
  25. I didn't know there were preying mantises in the UK.
