  1. HAHA yea that would be a make em or break em section. Great idea though Rupe i would love to do the same in Scotland. I guess creeping up to the end of my overworked and underpaid climbing career i need to think of other things to lighten the load on the ageing bones.
  2. Looks like a good walk... maybe next time you should think of taking light, dried, just add boiling water type of foods though
  3. I hope your sad story becomes a happy one Nick, hang in there. My best achievement was having the balls to decide within a day to move to Rome where i stayed for 5 years, it was the best thing i could have done to open my eyes to other cultures and ways of doing things we take for granted. Also the silver pine eh stevie
  4. Ummm yea i know, me being brains was helping everyone else to understand
  5. that would be a double negative therefore he IS experienced:001_tt2: Anyway in answer to the question I guess a crane would make the job quicker if your having to rig everything but as to how much quicker then that depends on many factors like is the crane operator a muppet? Is access for the crane easy? etc personally if the wood is all being left on site i wouldnt bother with the crane. In fact i never bother with a crane except if someone got one in for me already (i am freelance) so that makes me inexperienced. I think they are cool though in the right scenario.
  6. Hi, Lots of good advice here.... DONT rush there is no need. Like most people have said already the speed comes with experience and lots of practice, if you try to rush it too early you could as a worst case scenario, kill yourself, so dont rush and just make sure you do everything correctly and safely. Good luck and stay safe
  7. not a bad fringe on the beech as well Did you have the pickup parked there when you dropped it for extra drama?
  8. Good Luck Matt and a good cause as well
  9. Get a spider jack... i just got my first one and it rocks at self tending. It still scares the begeezus out of me but i am slowly getting used to it.
  10. Janey you did what you could so now you can relax and stay well clear of the tree on a windy day!
  11. Here is another one i found lots of and they got me lots of work as well... this it the red palm weevil or punteruolo rosso in Italian. Ummm i guess i should have looked up its scientific name before starting this Anyway this little beauty is responsible for killing a hell of a lot of palm trees in Rome and Italy as a whole and is spreading quickly. They eat the heart of the palm and kill the tree within a few months, then i get the palm bike on:thumbup1:
  12. Yea i know its not a european species and thats why i was so amazed to have found it. I spoke to a few people over there in Rome and a few others of this species had been found there. If its not Hercules then its extremely similar, and i also studied it quite a bit because i was so amazed at the size of it. I am still convinced that its Hercules more probably because i want it to be
  13. looks like you found all your fishing bait in 1 square meter! they look very similar to Dynastes Hercules grubs but i guess much smaller. Only reason i know that is because i found a couple munching away at a dead stump when i was staying in Rome and was amazed at the size of the monsters. Here is a pic i took of one of them before i put it back where i found the beauty:thumbup:
  14. never had one break on me either:001_tt2:
  15. thats if your not taking the piss:sneaky2:
  16. i actually heard that tights are really good to wear under chainsaw protection, especially in winter but i cant say i have ever tried. I dont think i could bring myself to do it lol Your a brave man coming out in this macho world of chainsaws and my tractors bigger than your tractor kind of people. I know if i was gay i wouldnt say a word to any of the guys i work around or my life would be hell!! Respect due
  17. If my girl asked for trees at our wedding (after laughing at her so hard it would hurt) i would say "hahahahahahahhaaaaahhh..... NO!" sounds like a rich mans problem to me
  18. watch you dont ladder your tights on those bramble thorns sorry couldnt resist...
  19. I am from west coast of scotland in the heart of midge country and i found getting completely pissed on a bottle of whisky by the camp fire works well or you could just use a midge net over your head and keep the rest covered
  20. Being freelance it wasnt my job anyway but still even after checking i couldnt see the nests till i cut the branch. I would say it would be almost impossible to have seen those nests in a survey. I am good Majestic thanks just a bit tired from a lot of sweating and then a lot of traffic getting home Accidents do happen yes and i agree that a lot of the cases are just plain ignorance. As for the nest in the hole i think that could have been spotted quite easily but also i cant comment because i dont know the circumstances behind the job...
  21. that was like going to confession! i feel much better maybe i should become a catholic!
  22. I had a similar situation last week in a conifer hedge, I knew it was likely to find nesting birds so i had a quick look before i started. Needless to say about 5 cuts in i cut a branch with a nest in it with 2 chicks which i think are starlings. I didnt see the nest at all even after having a look with the really thick foliage. I put the nest back as best i could and decided to stop the job, just as i did that i turned to start climbing down again and there is a pigeon chick staring at me from its nest in the next branch! So here is a question... I checked the hedge before i started and only found the nests when i had cleared some branches so should i be prosecuted for it? even after checking? Mistakes happen and are easily done when working in those situations where it is difficult to see through the thick stuff. Do we have any leg to stand on if some crazy fanatic kicks up stink because you cut a branch with a nest you didnt see? As it happens i felt real bad for the chicks and i hope they are ok, I guess the worry i had for them is worse than any fine i could get for it seeing as i love nature and everything in it.
  23. all i can say is ouch! argh! eek! and many other types of yelp that i cant type have fun and cover up well!
