The best repellant by far is Avon skin so soft. Not strictly a repellant but it works like a dream. I also work as a white water raft guide in the highlands of Scotland and the Mozzies are fierce up here! A splash of that and they dont look twice at you. The brittish army have just started using it as well as far as i know for their far flung operations. Worth a shot if you ask me.

Yeah i did see that mate, cracking video. Like i said my original thought was to dog tooth the ash but was just wondering if there was any new and magical way to cut it. Bought a ratchet today for a bit of extra security. Looking forward to the job tomorrow. Video and pics soon to follow hopefully.

Haha nappies are already in my kit bag! Whilst working as a white water raft guide my boss tipped a 6 stack of 12 man rafts over on the motorway. the trailor disintigrated and sheared off the tow bar. The only thing to hold up was the ratchets, £20 from halfods not too shabby. Ill get my groundie to film it and take some snaps too.

Cheers for the replies lads, Its nice to know that arb talkers like to look after their own. Dog tooth was the road i was going to go down. May take a trip to halfords tomorrow and buy a ratchet strap for and extra bit of security. Plus its a chance to buy something nice and shiney:thumbup:

Iv been asked to take down a big ash with about a 40 degree lean on it. It is in privately owned woodland, The lean came about due to high winds causing it to slightly uproot. Its a ticking time bomb if you ask me. Its about 0.70m across at the bottom and a fair few tonnes of wood in it. My question is, how would you guys go about doing it? My thoughts are obviously put the gob in and bore out the middle leaving a fair bit of holding wood, then nik that out to drop the tree. The reason i ask is that iv had a large ash split on me before even though the lean wasnt bad at all. Only about 10 degrees. Im a confident cutter but for some reason this one has given me the fear. Any advice would be great, Ill put some pictures up tomorrow as i forgot my camera today. Paul

First off, This is an amazing thread! very informative and clear. Im fairly new to rigging as was always quite unsure about the different techniques, but as soon as i saw the "art and science of practical rigging" book mentioned i was reaching for the bank card. Brilliant book! It would be nice to see some photos of your rigging setups up close just so we can see all the elements. Awsome thread, keep it up!

Very good point, as a fairly new climber i know that from a groundies point of view you dont want to tell the experienced climber how to do his job and it can be quite intimidating but if safety is an issue then say SOMETHING! When rigging now i always double check with the groundies if they are happy with everything and ready for me to cut. sometimes we miss things when in a rhythm and thats when accidents happen. Not saying you did miss something but its worth remembering that things occasionally can and will go wrong.

Anybody know where i can go and have a bit of a climb on a large tree in or around Glasgow? iv just bought some new kit and as work is pretty much non existant at the mo id really like to go and try my shiny stuff out before using it on a job. cheers

Both very valid points, The main problem i have is when i am ascending. I have an O rig between my bridge and the HC so i can pull and go. But the OP isnt gripping half the time and end up having to pull the HC back to me and dress it again. When i pull on the tail to ascend, the VT obviously comes into contact with the HC. But then when i release it it stays where it is (like wire). Am i just being a plank or is there anything i can do? Iv tried different combos of 4 wraps 2 braids etc. I love the simplicity of the HC but it just aint working for me.

Hi all, been having a bit of trouble with my hitchclimber with OP eye to eye 8mm cord on 13mm XTC rope. Just wondering if either the Beeline or Silverstreak are slightly softer cords hence will grip better. The OP cord seems like wire compared to others people are talking about. Cheers in advance.

Hi all, i have been chopping and changing my climbing setup just to try and find one that makes ascending and moving around the crown as easy as possible. Thought id go back and try my hitchclimber again. Just wondering what setups people have come up with and most importantly whats the easiest way to ascend using the hitchclimber. Hi all, i will be moving home to Glasgow at the end of April and am really hoping to start getting some work in Once settled. I have been working down in mid Wales for the last 2 years and have a lot of experience in groundie work and a bit of climbing but would like more. I have CS30/31/38/39, all my own PPE, saws, climbing kit and First aid etc. I am hoping this move will prove more fruitful than the last 2 years down here. Hi mate, nice pics. i used to live in Aberfeldy. The 3rd picture is right next to the black watch monument? and the swim is just across the river from it and just up from wades bridge? used to work as a white water raft guide on the tay and i know the river like the back of my hand. Lovely place to live and work, thanks for bringing back some very fond memories mate
