  1. Have you sent mine out that I won in the raffle Jonesie? Not that I'm excited about getting it :-) Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

    Husky 550XP

Just to bump this a bit. Love my 550xpg but had some cold starting issues. Following the instructions left me harassed as it failed to start from cold. Prime, pull to cough, set half and pull endlessly to start. The solution I found for cold starting is as mentioned previously. Leave the primer bulb alone. Starts reliably now. Suggested it to my mate with a 560 yesterday and he found the same. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. Piss wet through and happy as a pig in ****, Stevie. Last cut of the day. Tidy, chip and extract the last of the logs tomorrow morning.
  4. 5 stemmed ash pushing into an abandoned steading. The last two stems leaned back over the roof. A pull rope on the truck plus a bore cut got them over nicely. Rob's Sugihara bar on my 346.

    550xp or 560xp?

No weight issues with the 550xpg. Every bit as agile as my 346 I wear warm gripper gloves too, but once they get wet they are miserable in the cold. The heated handles make quite a difference and you go back to concentrating about how you're using the saw and not the fact that your hands are cold.
  6. Thanks mate. Updated my docs
  7. Did it!
  8. What about the Wraptor powered climbing system? Not cheap, but a sure fire way of getting folk up into the crowns. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. No, the leaves are all wrong for Macro. It's a Hemlock. Think its western but wouldn't put money on it. Plenty of lunge practice I think. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

    550xp or 560xp?

Exactly! And with a 13" bar it's outrageously quick snedding. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. I've got a few weeks to work it out Stevie. The guys on the estate are good and I've known and worked with them for a while, plus I have two other climbers. There is track access in to the garden to the right of the plant pot so I've got room to breathe. To be honest I'm more excited about rec-climbing it. It sits well above the Findhorn River and there will be tremendous views north to the Black Isle and west towards Inverness. One to video I think.
  12. The estate has a 10 tonne forwarding trailer, Mark. Failing that we'll get it trucked to the sawmill. They have their own mill (the building in the background is the original sawmill), but don't think the guys there have dealt with anything of that DBH yet! My money is on the plant pot being safe. The tenant is moving out next week.
  13. Plenty to think about. The big kit belongs to the estate. I've just got to get it down. The estate sells chip for biomass so will have to see where the goalposts lie in regards to that. Cheers guys. Hope to see you in April for a beer Pete. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. The additional stems were what I was considering as they would be a hassle on a straight fell. I was thinking of having a climber on each of the opposed stems, stripping them and felling them out before the main stem was tackled. Have access to tractors and a big Heizo chipper. 15. Been asked to look at felling this Hemlock. Its odd crown is due to lower limbs becoming additional vertical stems. DBH is 59", height I reckon about the 100ft mark (not been back to make a proper assessment yet). The lower limbs are around 24"+ in diameter rising to 3/4 total height. I'm interested in how long a 2/3 man team would take to bring this down. Two of the big limb/stems sit over the listed building in the background. It has been climbed to the top by relatives of the tenant, without ropes, so I'm definitely rec-climbing it before any action is taken So how long to do? Has anyone done similar? Are there many Hemlocks this size around still?
  16. Hi Jon, Oregon for me for the last while. 21BPX on the 346 and 550, and 73DP on the 576.
  17. Owner (sole trader). But generally, pie-eater, monkey boy, and short-arse seem to be the norm. I like Andy's idea of Arboriculturist Technician. Perhaps an apt title if you have 34,35 and 41. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Surprised at that. Found mine heavy, ungainly, and slow to rev up when snedding. A plodder saw that made the day hard work. Traded mine for use of a hire car and still don't miss it. OP, steal your hubby's 260 and try it for a couple of days work. If you like using it buy a husky 550xp as you'll find it similar in size but nicer to use all day. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDfH6CgJ6fM]Big Tree Country - YouTube[/ame] Something to get those climbing juices flowing. Another area to think about.
  20. Likewise. Great arbtruck, but it only works for me as my kids are 10 and 11. Just checked the garage in case I could have trial fitted booster seats for you, but unfortunately the missus has ditched our old ones.
  21. Keeping warm Jon. Hot bath and a scotch for me tonight. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Snow, sunshine, snow, sunshine, blizzard, sunshine, snow. Plenty lying on the ground, but not too cold when the sun came out. When I couldn't see through my visor we toasted in the truck for 10 minutes New 550xpg kept my gloves nice and warm though. Felling and snedding birch with it along the roadside. My grin just got bigger and bigger. What a cracking saw.

    Bigger Saw?

576XP is probably as big as you want to go. I was ringing up 24" and 30" elm yesterday with an 18" bar fitted and it just eats its way through it. It's an animal of a saw. I've a 26" bar for it which is rarely used, but it pulls that through hardwood with no issues. Other saw makes are available
  24. That's one I like Penfold. I used to think I should carry business cards with that printed on, to hand to the obstructive numpties who wouldn't know common sense if it bit them on the arse. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. You've got two hopes and one of them's Bob. Favourite crew saying. One day in the van in Jacksonville one of the somewhat slower guys came out with "You've got two chances". There was a silence and then from the back of the van came, "Who the f*^% is Bob Chance?" Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
