  1. I bought two moisture meters. A cheap one and an expensive one. This one: TESTO|606-2|MOISTURE METER + TEMP/RH | Farnell United Kingdom and this one: --|ST-125|MOISTURE METER | Farnell United Kingdom Both gave virtually the same readings as each other when tested on the same pieces of wood. Also the cheaper one seemed of better build quality due to it's rubberised housing. The expensive meter felt and looked a bit budget. Was really disappointed with it. I'd definitely recommend the cheaper one any day.
  2. I'm a chimney sweep and the item you linked to looks rubbish. You get what yo pay for and they're very cheap.
  3. 18 cube booked in for tomorrow. 12 for next Saturday. May Have to get Fridays lined up if it carries on! New truck is a beauty too. Won't be long until its paid for itself.
  4. I usually leave it wherever it was. Sometimes I'll actually open them up so long as there isn't loads of fuel on just to give it a bit of a thrash and help keep the liner clean and dry.
  5. If its matt black give it a quick dusting with a tin of paint. It's easy to apply and you won't tell it's had paint. We spray all stoves after installation to remove finger prints and to make the flue pipe exactly the same colour as the stove lid. We also do it to paint any rivets we've installed and to hide the fire cement joint between the flue and stove collar. It's totally normal in the trade to spray a new stove. Once fire cement is dry you'll struggle to get it off.
  6. I think the issue is that your not supposed to install any heating appliances that aren't CE marked so you may struggle if you ever need to make a claim due to fire caused by a home made stove.
  7. The biggest part of the service is answering the phone. Then you need to get them booked in. Work out a system so that whoever answers the phone can get them booked in. If you call around firewood suppliers you'll find the majority don't answer the phone when you call so if your the one that does you'll pick up the work. This is how we started with wood, fires, stoves, chimney sweeping......etc. 5 years on we have thousands of loyal customers.
  8. We don't slumber ours but quite often there are embers in the morning. I just chuck some wood on and open up the vents and it's off in a short while. Sometimes I leave the door ajar for a little extra air to help it along. You should be able to do this if your wood is nice and dry. Otherwise you may need some kindling or find a new firewood supplier.
  9. Yeah if you have an existing chimney it's best to reline it with 316 or 904 grade multi fuel liner. If doing it yourself your supposed to file a building notice application otherwise it isn't legal and you may struggle with insurance should you ever have a house fire due to the installation.
  10. A digger with a bucket?
  11. Technically if it's been drying for a full year then it can be called seasoned but I wouldn't say it's ready to burn at 26%.
  12. Officially stove manufacturers tell people 25% or less but to be honest it only burns really nice when 15% or less. All our wood is 10-18%. I installed a stove for a guy the other week. He had a log store full of wood and he was well chuffed that it was £60. I jabbed my moisture meter in it and some of it read over 60%!
  13. Hehe. We get asked for half loads but I won't do them. Waste of time. Last time I got asked I told them to buy a full load and give half of it to somoone else:)
  14. Seems the recent couple of days of cold weather has done the trick. Just booked 12 deliveries of firewood in one day. We've only been doing it for 5 months and we're heaving!
  15. Thanks for all the comments. I was really pleased with the end result and it works a treat. It was a company local to us. The guy who owns it is a mate of mine. I'll have a word with him to see if he's happy doing any more before I put his name about.....I'm sure he will be. I'll check on the cost with him as mine was the first we did. The rear end can be built without the truck and then it's simply an hour or so to fit it.
  16. Hmm it's definately different here. We're doing plenty of domestic deliveries and I've got people taking 2 and 3 loads at a time at £355. I'm assuming your supplying to a lot of folk with open fires? Could you somehow target people with wood burners more? I find a lot of folk with open fires are generally the older generations that won't spend their money whereas the younger guys with the wood burners are a bit more willing to part with their money for a decent product.
  17. Yeah it's a really quick way of doing it. We do all of our deliveries on a Saturday and sometimes a Friday too if we've got a lot on. It's definately the way to do it. Can make good money then and it's worth paying someone else to do it. We load it up with a 1.2 cube bucket so filling is quick. The Dyna is a massive improvement on the Cabstar but I don't know if the Cabstar was as it should be. It was second hand and 7 years old had done at least 100,000 miles so it's not a fair comparison until I drive a brand new one. I love the Dyna though. Pretty cheap for what you get. It's comfy, quiet, nippy and looks smart. Also the clutch is MUCH lighter. Bit naff on fuel at 22 miles to the gallon but hey......you can't have everything! Yes it is lovely and narrow. Not found a driveway I can't get down yet.
  18. 1.2 cube in each bay. That fills them to the level you can see in the photo. Don't really want to fill them any further as you'd be well overweight and the wood could jam inside the bays. The original truck is completely unmodified too. The unit in the back makes use of the existing tie down 'u' bolts.
  19. Picked up our truck yesterday with the new custom back end and used it for the first time today. It's brilliant. We used to hand ball the logs off but now it's just a case of pulling a lever and pressing a button. Takes seconds and we can tip 1,2 or 3 loads independently or all together. What an improvement. We managed to do 9 deliveries between 9:30 and 13:30 today. If anyone has a Dyna and wants a back end building let me know and i can point you in the right direction.
  20. I had a Hilux Invincible and i was a great machine. A mate of mine had an L200 and it was dreadful. Watch some episodes of Top Gear on Dave.........they loved the Hilux. It doesn't drive great on the road.....a bit bouncy on the back and and pretty light but not bad.........you can't have your cake and eat it though! If your keeping your defender for off-road then why not buy a Dyna or Cabstar? Can fit 3 loads in the back?
  21. We're getting £130 per 1.2 cube no probs. people who bought one load a couple of months back have now asked for another 3 loads. Had a lot of people comment on the fact it's the best wood they've every had and they're more than willing to pay for quality. Supplied one person in our village and off the back of that I do around 20 people in our village now. All taking around 4 cube over winter by the looks of it.
  22. I've just treated myself to a brand new Toyota Dyna. It's coming on Thursday next week. I'm also having a custom back end built for it which will consist of three bays each capable of holding 1.2 cube with hinged doors dividing the bays which will have pins at the bottom. I can then simply lay a tarp down on the floor and pull either 1,2 or 3 pins depending on how much wood the customer wants and tip the back end and drive away. Can't wait as its going to make deliveries even quicker and easier. Only issue with them is they're naff in snow and mud.
  23. Hmm....1 ton in a pick-up......must be very wet:)
  24. Stovax are pretty decent stoves. They're what I'd call middle of the road although their prices are more high end. Their inset stoves such as the Riva and Riva Studio are excellent quality. They're a massive company with a massive range of stoves that have been doing it for donkeys years so they must be doing something right. I did notice in your post that you said he was only getting a little heat out of it with the doors open? A stove should not be used with the doors open. No stove will give out good heat with the doors open as your basically using it as an open fire.
  25. To the OP 5' x 8' x 16" is 1.52m x 2.44m x 0.41m Your trailer will hold 1.52m3 filled level.
