  1. Heh has sold a few hasn't he.....crazy. I'm gonna start selling 1.2 cube of DECORATIVE logs.
  2. Maybe you need to sell decorative logs instead! :-) There's no money in them logs you burn!
  3. White Birch Decorative / Display Firewood Logs | eBay UK
  4. We installed a stove for a customer. I went back to it a few months later as they'd messed with the door catch adjustment and couldn't get it right. Whilst i'm there he says....."they're bloody expensive to run aren't they" I asked him how he was buying his wood......he the went into he pantry and pulled out a little cardboard box. It was like one of those boxes you get 6 bottles of wine in with the cardboard dividers. The box was tiny and each log was loaded into a separate divider. When i asked him how much he told me he'd paid £5.50 from a stove shop in Harrogate! That's nearly a £1 per log! It was a nice looking cardboard box though :-) People who live in Harrogate and Knaresborough get heavily ripped off by the local shops. It's crazy. I advised he found a log supplier.....one that didn't live in Harrogate and get at least a cube delivered at a time. He'd be well chuffed at our £130 for 1.2 cube!
  5. You can employ casual labour but not cash in hand. If your employing them then you need to pay PAYE and NI. Also yeah.....insurance would be necessary but probably pointless as the first thing most people do is remove all guards and safety features from a firewood processor so any insurance would be invalid. Suppose you'd just have to cross your fingers and hope that everyone keeps theirs!
  6. Shouldn't be too hard to find someone. So long as they're responsible and trustworthy the machinery is easy enough to learn. I've been wondering the same and seen as it's an un-skilled job that needs no qualifications i'd be looking at the basic wage you'd pay a labourer. £80 a day i thought.
  7. yeah good points on the switch gear. I personally would rather have an electric motor drive.....much less to go wrong than hooking it up to a tractor that has its own engine and electrics. I wouldn't buy one purely due to it being unknown and also the price is up there with Palax and Hakki......just thought it looked pretty well built though. Fairly hefty and nicely finished.
  8. TRACTOR HYDRAULIC LOG SPLITTER, Firewood splitter | eBay UK Anyone heard of them or used them?
  9. To be honest it cost us a fortune cause he also burned down around 4 Leylandii of next doors.......the first time we met the neighbours was over their smouldering hedge! Had to replace the hedge. Not good.
  10. I'm actually not storing or processing any at the moment so i have put the barn on hold at my mates farm. I'm buying wood processed and seasoned at £55 a cube and selling at £110 a cube. I can do 6 deliveries on a Saturday before lunch time so not a bad wage for half a days work. Once i've got some money behind me i'll look at a firewood processor and buying cordwood but until then i'm happy with the current setup.
  11. I haven't really considered what would take a crash best:-) I'm not intending to crash it really:-) An L200 pickup won't carry enough. I want to be able to fit 3 loads at 1.2 cube a load. I'll take a look at the differences in payload between the Dynas and the Cabstar and see if there is any difference.
  12. Hi all, My father visited us from Spain around 6 months ago and thought he would help us out by burning some rubbish in the garden. He chose to do it under one of the massive trees.......consequently the heat from the fire has damaged the tree and caused the bark to fall off. There are three trees together and two have damage to some of the bark on one side. I assume something needs to be done about this to protect the tree? If so is it something i can do and if so what needs doing? Or is it something i need to get a pro in for? Is it just a case of painting it with something or is there more to it. I'm clueless about tree health so any help would be much appreciated. I'm not trying to save money either....if it's in the best interest of the tree i'm happy to pay a pro.....i really don't want these trees to die! Please see photos below.
  13. There's tonns of parts available on ebay for the Nissan Cabstars....they're a pretty common van. Anyone know whether they're any worse than the Dyna? It's the size that appeals to me with these trucks.....the Transits are a bit wide.
  14. I want to be able to collect 3 loads at a time. If i had an ifor trailer i'd need a bigger towing vehicle as it would be over weight with 3 loads.....also i'd like to have a dedicated vehicle for logs so that anyone can drive it.
  15. I'm going for 1.2m cubed bays at the mo as i'm buying my wood pre-processed and seasoned and selling it on and the JCB that it's loaded with holds 1.2m cubed so it was to keep things simple. Later on in the year i'll buy a processor and get some wood in and do it myself so it won't really matter what volume.
  16. Looking at new truck to deliver my logs. Thinking of a Toyota Dyna and splitting the back into 3 and installing plywood sides to increase height so each bay takes approx 1.2 cubic metres. Has anyone else done this? I reckon the sides shouldn't need to be too high as a level fill would be approx 1.9 cubic metres so only need to fit another 1.7 cube in there. If i doubled the height of the sides from the original height it should fit quite comfortably? The reason i fancy a Dyna is because they're pretty slim and will fit in everyone's driveways. Any other recommendations would be appreciated. Is there much difference between the Dyna, Cabstar and Izuzu's?
  17. Was at a guys the other day who runs two Palax processors. Can't remember which one but they're only cheap ones at 7k or so. He has tried them all and prefers Palax.....they're a circular saw setup.....cuts quicker and stays sharp longer. He replaces the machines every 2 years or so. He said you need to remove all guards and covers and then they'll turn out wood at a decent rate.
  18. Looks good.....needs an output conveyor though. Takes too long to hand ball the logs afterwards. Any plans for an output conveyor?
  19. I'd be interested.....15 mins from York myself. PM on it's way.
  20. £130 a cube around here from a local guy........everyone thinks they're getting loads because it's the back of a trailer but the trailer when measured actually comes out at 1.08 of a cube:-)
  21. They're only 10 - 15 mins from us........thought it might be a bit cheeky asking them as they're a bit close for comfort.
  22. Hi there, As the title says.....looking for a decent timber haulage contact in the Leeds area. Anyone know of any and can provide contacts details? Cheers, Chris
  23. What do you reckon you can comfortably process on your Hakke 2 x in a day?
  24. Hehe what a joke.
  25. I've gotta say that every machine seems to have it's pro's and cons.......the only thing i didn't like about Posch was when i saw this video [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vKjB56-mFU]YouTube - posch -spaltfix s-300 comfort firewood processor[/ame] The very first cut it does the blade doesn't go right through hence it does't drop into the splitter! I like the look of the big Palax machines.....they seem pretty quick and have plenty of power.......the Binderberger 520 looks good but the ram seems a little slow but i suppose at 30 tonn of pressure you can't have everything. The 2 x Hakke Pilke seem nice and fast but then will really only do small diameter stuff. I'm of the kind of thinking of buy once and buy good!
