  1. i think the only way to guarantee a certain amount of money comin in every day is to have plenty jobs comin in.. i price every single job that calls.. they could be up to 100 miles away or more at times.. i walked in door half hour ago.. just had my dinner and spent 5 mins with the boy before he goes to bed now i'm off on prob 40 mile round trip to look at 4 jobs that called today.. i looked at 3 last nite of which 2 agreed straight away and one other has called today to accept after gettin another quote... i no tree firms who wont look at a job unless its on their doorstep or between 8 to 5 or on a sat mornin.. unlike other tree firms we start around 7.30 and leave the yard at 5... none of this finishin at 2.30 or 3 in afternoon... and when we're busy my guys will work till 8 or 9 at nite especially if a neighbour comes out and wants summin done.. what i'm sayin is you only get out what you put in..
  2. i want to win every job i price. i like to work on min of £600 in my pocket after wages every day.. some jobs i look at i think theres fair bit work there and if i have to be on site for any length of time i want a certain amount and wont budge... if i can send my 2 lads there and perhaps a climber and i dont see them till they come back in yard at 5 with cash or cheque then i'm willin to improve my quote... at the end of the day a job for a £1000 could still be done for say £500 or less and still earn a reasonable amount, think its more about knowing how your competitors price work, around here we prob have the most population of travellin community doing tree work and believe it or not they price there work very high.. so do other "proper" tree firms.. i've recently gained lot work from guy i no who's been doing tree's for 25 yrs but cant climb anymore cos his elbows had it.. lot of work he's already priced and won but he hasnt put his own wage into the equation.. where as i pay my climber from £150 to £180 a day plus 2 other workers he pays 2 workers and if he comes out with £300 after hes happy. some jobs dont need a climber which is lucky and ones that do we can normally do in a morning and fit summin else in that afternoon otherwise they wouldnt be worth doing.. job we did yesterday for him for instance for £540 took us 2 hours [3 men] he'd put full day on it.. 5 out of 10 jobs i price i get at full money then couple more i reckon come in bit cheaper... there arent many jobs i price that i dont win one way or the other.. and i'll try every trick in the book to get em and if that means droppin my quote a bit then so be it..
  3. but i no what your sayin.. often i hear i've had cheaper quote and you can have job if you match it... why are they offerin me the job if someones come in cheaper.. just tryin it on i guess...
  4. i woulda done the job for a 1000.. i dont care if they had my trousers down.. £330 in wages and £40's worth of red diesel.. and i wont touch a twig...
  5. i give the customer about a week then if its not too far i'll drive past to see if jobs been done.. if not i'll call them to ask if they've had any more thoughts on havin the tree work done.. or if they've had any more quotes.. you wouldnt believe the amount of people who say "glad u called i been meanin to call u"or "yeah we've had another quote and its bit less than yours can you match, or beat it".. got job to do friday that i called back few weeks ago... it was for £1400 and they'd been quoted 1250.. could i do it for 1200 which i said yes to and turns out neighbour wants small job done which i looked at and won for £280.. so back up and above the 1400 and all will be done on friday so yes def worth callin back...
  6. none for a cherry picker...! i've owned one for nearly ten yrs now and can say i've never been asked....
  7. i had my 110 high cap L/rover made into a tipper with original body.. worked a treat.. and also did dodge ram 2500 club cab before that.. both of them i sold with good profit... the land rover flew away.. phone never stopped ringing till months after.. people loved the fact it was still original and unless you knew it woulda been hard to tell it was a tipper..
  8. i hired one from them last year.. cant remember height but it was on a 24 ton chassis.. never asked us for any tickets which was good cos we dont have any.. took the driver over hour and half to set it up and i had to help with most of it.. he didnt have a clue what he was doing as it was 1st time he'd taken it out.. when we finally got it going we did the job with no problems..
  9. same thing.. teach/preach
  10. as i've said before, if we all do everything the way HSE want us to do it we wont get very far... how many of those HSE workers have got there own business's... like my grandad used to say.. those that cant do teach...
  11. if your stupid enough to put your hands in the splitting area while its workin then you shouldnt be anywhere near anything mechanical in first place..
  12. he's doing well from day to day, breathing on his own, all his organs workin ok. he was quite a good weight at 2lb 12oz and as they managed to give faye full course of steroids before he was born means his lungs are workin well.. our main concern is any brain damage that may have been caused by takin 15 mins to get his heart going.although the docs say the fact all his organs are workin is good sign he may not have any but they cant tell for few months when they can do an MRI scan.
  13. hi all.. this is Taylor Nicholas James Channer.. born 30/5/11 [same day as me].. Unfortunatly born at 28 weeks with few complications..
  14. we gotan avenue of around 30 eucs at farm and day by day theres more leaves turning brown.. started near trunk and working thereway out..
  15. i constantly move them aroundwith the forklift.. also took few side sheets off to get some air flow in barn.. most of that wood was outside in rings or cord for couple months before splittin although it gets cut down and split within couple days at mo and seems to be ok
  16. gonna have to move them round corner to our other farm.. theres an old silage pit there.. they'l fit nicely in there.. gotta have a clean concrete base so i can load em with fork lift grain bucket.. if i had my way the fieldswould be rented to my cousin next door and that shed and the 2 next to it would be full to the door with split logs..
  17. This is my split log pile ready for the winter.. Hopefully it will get alot bigger by the end of the summer
  18. def would include range rover in that, there the WORST!!.
  19. i've had X5's in past and theres no way thereworse than a rane rover or range sport.
  20. this time 3 months ago i had 3 veichles.. 4 if you include my old mans with a land rover badge on.. all bought either brand new or less han yr old.. now i only got 1 and old man wont have his for long.. i'm lookin to get rid of my last one very soon when i can find a nice late low mileage X5.. i have to say i or my dad will never own anything land rover again.. why people put up with the **** they churn out begs belief..
  21. the one i drove wasa 2l and it was a 2 wheel drive.. not that i woulda known had i not been told..
  22. i drove one in argentina and might only be a 2l but my god did it fly.. all the farmers have replaced there toyotas with them..
  23. DO NOT GET A LAND ROVER!! the new vw double cab looks good. was in argentina last month and there all over the place over there.
  24. got airsuspension on my scania skip lorry.. when you got bit too much weight on a little press of the button and airbags lift up thus stops lorry lookin over weight..
  25. dont think its that cos it does actually boil over if left with dirty rad and as it runs hot lot of time it uses water... not to mention i'm on my 3rd compressor 1n 2 yrs which is obviously watercooled and exessive heat causes it to seize..
