  1. I burn branch logged hybrid Willow in a log burner and it is very easy to see that it would work well in a gasifying boiler. I load onto a bed of hot ash and instead of the wood burning it just sits there until it reaches a certain temp and then a blue flame burns about 3-4 inchs above the wood, it's interesting to watch in that it behaves just like a gas fire. The wood itself slowly turns black, the blue flame goes and the wood stars to turn to charcoal and embers beginning the cycle again.
  2. This thread has brought back memories; I did the Pyg track as a kid back in 1980 as part of an outwards bounds trip. Was very hot at the time and apart from the heat it was an easy walk. Went back a year later with a different group and did the Horseshoe route, an entirely different kettle of fish. The ridge bit (forget the name) scared the crap out of me and a girl with us at the time 'froze', it took about 30 mins to talk her across it. Both my visits were in the Spring. I would not consider doing the Snowdon Horseshoe route this time of year. I moved onto the Lake district and have since gone on to walk most of the fells at all times of the year so consider myself an experienced fell walker albeit lapsed:biggrin:
  3. Bit the bullet and bought one on Friday, waiting for it to turn up in the post:001_smile:
  4. Thanks Pete, I was hoping someone would say that. Guy
  5. We were in the same situation but already owned a small tractor. Had a small electric splitter then went over to a pto screw splitter - never looked back, the electric splitter now sits redundant. I process approx. 40m3 every 4 years during winter. My advice would be to not waste your money on the electric splitter no matter how cheap, just go direct to the tractor pto splitter (of your choosing)
  6. The Turboshaft only came out in the middle of last year so I think you might be thinking of a different tool
  7. I bought a 3 year old 110 Td5 ex utilities at auction from them back in 2001. Easy company to business with at the time.
  8. Hi, Does anyone have any experience of this tool, if so what do you think? Thanks
  9. :laugh1: No wonder I weigh what I do.
  10. Yes, we do, in fact it's all we eat. Use the 'No Knead' method, so simple its stupid
  11. Blacksmiths Stake tool. They are more typical as a 'stake anvil' - a small anvil normally with a specific purpose that can be driven into a log. Lots of different types for amour making and thin plate metal beating. This one looks more like a cut off tool - a 'stake cut-off' if you like.
  12. We bought a Def TD5 second hand, ex utilities, at 60k miles. By the time it hit 90k all the big stuff started to go. Ran a Merc E class from 178k miles to 230k miles, I rebuilt ALL the suspension and brakes, bullet proof motor and box but then the ABS pump goes, aircon pump goes, windows drop and won't come back up, SRS airbags show red light on dash... still did 55 mpg at 95 mph but all too expensive to sort and pass the test. At the end of the day you get to about 100k miles and all sorts of stuff starts to fail depending on how well it was made and how well it was treated subsequently.
  13. He's a joke; Staunchly anti nuclear for years, Fukushima occurs and he goes staunchly pro nuclear overnight. There's a pattern to what he writes and when as this recent flood event shows. Regardless of what one thinks of the issues, anyone who flip flops from one strong opinion to the polar opposite so often... No thanks George
  14. Yes, I use one of those along with a hitch lock. I think its OK for a trailer and ticks a box on the insurance requirements etc. but for an expensive chipper or plant...
  15. Great thread Mick. Agree with you and Ty, but then I live here too:001_rolleyes:
  16. More likely half your arm:lol: Best not to let a toddler work it:thumbup1:
  17. In the summer to fire a pizza oven. Autumn and spring a small wood burner, winter to fire up from cold an Esse Ironheart then once the oven is hot switching to cord wood. Has meant we can stretch an arctic load of cord another couple of seasons - not to be sniffed at. I fully accept however you need to be an enthusiast or hard up to go to the effort. Don't think you would easily sell nets to the local pub as firewood for instance:001_smile:
  18. You could do what I did and import a basic unit from Poland and build your own. Would not be without it now. Since this vid I have added a screw splitter on the back for cord wood and cover plates on the input/output of the muncher mech. when the splitter is in use.
  19. Having just scrapped a high mileage Merc with a pre heater but without a DPF, the heater helps engine wear but still only works ONCE the engine is running. Mercs have DPF issues too!! You are confusing two different issues.
  20. Their selling it !!!!! Are you for real with this post?
  21. To add a heater to this generation of diesel engine suffering a DPF issue is to NOT understand the issue of DPF regen. You will indeed have a nice warm engine, but that does not make a nice HOT dpf. The Webasto heaters are an old world solution to old world diesel engines long before DPF's were ever thought of - work well on old 90's diesel's with mechanical pumps but not on new common rails with DPF. The issue of engine wear on a cold start is entirely different to DPF issues. But WTF do I know.
  22. Ah, I see. I thought you were asking for feedback on what you posted, I did not realise you expected us to do our own google research to answer your question. If you had already done that research yourself then why ask the question? The left/right thing is really not relevant, is it? You asked a question regarding your media postings. Don't know where the "tin hat" thing comes in but what ever floats your boat...
  23. Sounds like the perfect justification for some skilled immigration I would not draw any conclusions from that list (with the exception of the nurses) until all figures were checked and cross referenced with industry sources or trade bodies directly. The media lie one way or another to suit their agenda at any moment in time.
  24. He's got his mandate to go 'balls deep' (other peoples obviously) on Syria now. Remind me who said "wars a racket"?
