  1. well if your not at college, you need to buy a saw to use on your nptc course.
  2. all this having to have a ticket to buy saw is ****, how are you meant to have a saw for training if cant buy one? maybe it would be better to make it an offence to use a top handle without a ticket. sorry for the thread derail.. if moneys tight get the larger engine echo its a great saw for the money.
  3. hi i have had dmm oval krabs failed for same reason, i tend not to buy dmm now. Think is just loller test being too strict thats is problem, i am still climbing on failed krabs and gate has never not closed. You can only stick gate open if you force the twist lock closed while slowly closing krab, whick would never happen while climbing.
  4. hi i just got a arborist heavy duty harness and it does not feel heavy duty , does anyone know the difference between arborist model abd heavy duty model?
  5. i had a ranger 02 and was great for towing , i just sold it as it was getting to 100000 on clock and cos i was towing everyday it started needing money spent on it ( leaf springs) also be told by guy who has had several that gearbox can get problems after 100000 miles.
  6. also if **** hits fan underwater you will be pleased to know what to do!! padi require you get 60 % on test bsac 80% makes sense to be a good diver . i remember being at 30m in red sea on my 6th dive doing padi training and thinking i dont really know what i am doing. Bsac get you to be a good diver so even if you lose your buddy you can get back to surface safley.
  7. you can do all bsac training in red sea as well and takes same time as padi, on bsac website they list all places abroad that do bsac training
  8. Hi i did a padi course but crossed over to bsac, padi costs more money and isnt as good , i think you are rushed though the training. Bsac course makes you a better safer diver and is ok to dive all round the world. You can train with a club ( cheap option but very slow) or train to be bsac ocean diver then sports diver with a dive center. One other difference padi dont do decomprestion diving so if you are diving a wreck at 30m you will only get about 5 min on wreck, with bsac spend as long as you want if you have the air . Also to wreck dive you need another padi qualification, bsac dont do wreck diver qual as you can just dive a wreck . PADI= Put Another Dollar In
  9. you doing things right if you do writtern quotes and confirm by email ( keep these emails). You also need to have on your quote a seven day cooling off period so you comply with the door step trading regs. ( even if people call you , to come to there house and quote). Doorstep selling - The Office of Fair Trading all of the above means you can take none payers to small claims. As for canceling work you can only recover lost exspences so in reality not much you can do there.
  10. Hi, l have a client who wants to buy a small/medium Quercus ilex (holm oak) , Acer Pseudoplatanus Negenia (Sycamore) or Sorbus Intermedia (Swedish Whitebeam). has anyone had trees delivered from here: Trees for Sale from Barcham - Everyones Tree Specialists if so are they any good?? i have had small fruit trees from local garden centers before but the quality wasnt great ( they never did well even after much care was taken mixing organic material in when planting) are there any better companies to buy from? thanks
  11. i've got the bigger echo 350 and is great saw had it for 2 years now and use it on every job, i think the one thing that lets echo down is the cost of spares ( £26 for plastic air filter!!!)
  12. you can get your 30/31 if you are 16 , my apprentice did last year, i paid him £25 day. But i give him all ppe, saws , training and pay tickets
  13. Thanks for the replys, looks like i going to wait till i get a better tree.By small shed i was thinking pole barn 20ft x 10 ft, was thinking this is small as seen some pics of huge wood sheds on this site! For furture referance is laylandi and macocarpa any good for the frame ? as most of my tree work is with them. and one other thing i wanted to know is when you have used the alaskan to rip the planks, how you you set up the small mill to get 6" wide planks? do you need bench or can this be done in the field?
  14. Hi all, i am taking down a big willow ( 70 ft ish )down for a freind , and i need a small wood shed as my firewood is not seasoning well. So is it worth buying a alaskan mill and oiler kit to get some timber? i already own a 395 thanks
  15. Thanks for the replys, i think skyhuck's idea is good i will fell some of the trees of 4" diamater and count the rings.
  16. the map from the council is too hard to see all the trees ( in cornwall the interative online map only shows conservation areas not TPO's), the council said they couldnt say which trees were covered as were too many. So since is not a blanket tpo ( woodland tpo) it only covers the trees over 21 years old , i just need to decide which trees are under 21 years old . Once i have done this i will call the council and get tree officer to come have a look.
  17. I need some help with a quote please. The quote i am doing is at an address where all the trees were given a tpo 's 21 years ago ( not a woodland tpo ) the tpo says trees of all speicies. mostly is sycamore , willow, birch and oak, how do i go about finding out the age of the trees? thanks
  18. just to keep everyone updated my axe came yesterday freom poland. And it just like people have said it is very easy to use, i split all the bits i couldnt split with old maul. Some really knoty bits took 2 or thre swing but loads less effort than getting the wood grenade out.
  19. as twolegged has said escallonia is good , but has one down side it generally gets very woody when old 20+ years
  20. i just orderd mine from poland ( Heavy duty splitting Axe Fiskars X27 (122500) - Ekosiarka.eu - Lawnmowers, Brushcutters, Chainsaws, Snow Throwers )for just over £55 , coming with ups on thursday. Cant wait to try it:biggrin:

  22. Andy your right i was told it would be ok to take the blow as they are strong, but since i was training i thought ok this is normal if i had been told it maybe ok i would of defo moved it . I don't want to keep on about this i only started thread to see if happened regularly ( hitting capstan). Also andy your right there is more to this story on day one and two we were training in a poplar that has tpo doing a reduction and i broke a lot of growth points climbing it and when i took top out i didn't get direction right and top smashed down into wrong place smashing more growth points. I think council are not happy about tree now. Any way there's all the story so is my last post on the matter , and just for people who haven't read all the post i do not wish to name instructor or training centre
  23. i don't want to name any names not the why i started the thread, all i wanted to know is is it normal to be told was ok to hit capstan. Thanks for all the reply s i now know it wasnt right. I got off to bad start with the instructor by climbing on a spiderjack and using cambium savers was told for first two days" i dont like your climbing" yesterday i asked why and is cos of spiderjack . Instructor says they aint good climbing and using two crabs on spiderjack is cross loading crabs. He just dont like me i think so as said before i going to take more care of my equipment today
  24. he said its ok you can still use it if you just feed the rope in from end (rather than do mid line attachment)
  25. thanks for the reply s, i hold cs38/39 and do use rigging stuff when there nothing i cant afford to replace it it goes wrong (fence panels etc..). i am getting training so i can use my rigging kit over targets like houses etc... As for believing what my instructor said , if i cant believe what i am told what's the point in the training?. I feel tomorrow that i must question anything i am told to do ( will it break my gear), so my gear is safe and that is not really what i expected rigging course to be like
