  1. I wouldn't worry too much about the state of the mulch just make sure that the mulch came from trees that didn't have any diseases. And try and get mulch that is partly decomposed and as this will mean that the tree will benefit from the nutrient up take quicker. If the tree is a high value tree and it is suffering from compaction perhaps you could try and aerate the soil with a terravent or air spade. This is expensive but once the tree is gone its gone!
  2. Yes and yes it did, about 10 years ago wasn't pleasant.
  3. This Kit really looks like the Dogs danglies, However at £290 This is just too much! I have my first aid at work and various other qual's in first aid Volunteered with Saint John for 2 years to get myself some experience. Training is very good and I believe that everyone should have it, but needs to be backed up with experience. We are arborists NOT paramedics, anything that is not in the regular £20 kit TBH is wasted on me, first aid is about stalling the deterioration of the casualty's condition until the real paramedics get there. £290 is a lotta cash, does it really offer that many more benefits from the £20 kit? How log does the contents last before its Selby date is reached and you have to throw it away? .
  4. Definatly aggree with this, But also the HSE are deemed unapproachable by small firms for fear of being told that they have to change everything and implement more paper work then what we could cut down!
  5. The problem is Fuel only draws cash in from a certain few, ok, A large proportion but its companies like ours that get hit the hardest! If the money is needed to sort the whole country out shouldn't the whole country be paying. I don't expect fuel to be cheap but the rate that it is going up, and with the economic climate as it is we cant just pass the cost on the the client, or we would simply have no work!
  6. We got a carlton, although it was a bigger model and it completely knocked the same sized vermeer we had for 6. It is an awesome machine! Carlton A+
  7. Agree with steve the Stihl 460 is a great saw we have three of them and would be completely lost without them (well at least inefficient)!
  8. Thats fine if you only have a few small things to do but can get uncomfortable if your having to do it for an extended period, pehaps i'm lazy
  9. I got one of the Petzl Tikkina head tourches bought for me as a 'one of those' presents, and though wow I am never going to use that! Its great, Battery life on it is good, its comfortable and very easy to apply or take of literally 5 seconds. Only has two settings, Bright and then a slightly darker setting but I dont see this as a problem as I dont have to faff through all the different settings to get to the one i want or to turn off! Petzl, Great product!!
  10. This fella has some extraordinary talent!!!
  11. Hi sounds like our dissertations could be closely linked if you ever fancy having a chat!

  12. Look up how to use a topping strop! A quality rope with a topping strop has never failed (probably) however your rope positioning must be good failure to do so will result in serious injury! Also art and science of practical rigging, great!
  13. Done mate PM me if you have any other surveys, I have done an assignment and currently doing a dissertation on biomass wood fuel!
  14. Sorry if I repeat others, but, I have always just drawn a diagram or used Google maps!
  15. Top handled saws are no different to any other machinery if you follow the guidelines given in your cs39 training i.e. good working position and you keep the saw well maintained i.e. sharp and as daft as it sound a FULLY functional chain brake then you should never have so much as a 'near hit' never mind an accident! However, Having said that I have had a little bit of a mishap with a MS 200 which left me with a near perfect imprint of the exhaust on my left arm for the best part of a year! Can you guess how it happened? A sloppy technique and a cutting corners to save a little bit of time as it was a crappy day! No excuse, but, I do put a lot more effort now into doing things by the book which, when you get used to it is just as fast any way!
  16. I think, the council can evoke there powers and charge your parents for not maintaining trees if the trees in question are lower then 2.5m over the footpath or unsafe. However they do have to give your folks the opportunity to rectify the problem themselves whether that be doing the work themselves or paying a contractor. They would need to give your parents sufficient notice that the work needed to be done and then another notice (if the works had not been carried out) the the council were going to do the works. It sounds to me that your parents are in the right and anything on there land shouldn't be touched unless it is unsafe or overhanging 2.5m over the footpath (which as above the council would have to notify your parents about). But then again I don't know all the ins and out, talk to the local tree officer I'm sure they will be able to fill you in. If you are really worried about the tree then request a TPO, But if you do there can be consequences which may disadvantage you. Hope this helped
  17. At last years APF I decided to let one of the guys pick his own saw as apposed to the regulat 300 mm silky, He bought a fancy Samuri. It was rubbish and is now residing in our permanent storage facility (the bin) Stick with Silky there what everyone uses for a reason!
  18. So doers that mean that if we go for a job interview, they will buy us one of them new flash stihl out fits
  19. Having said that we got a letter the other week from one of the companies we work for saying that if we did not have that accreditation then they would be unable to use us in the future so were gonna have to get it, its all just office based any way!
  20. I have never had a bad one really, I think they all appreciate every one has got to start somewhere! one or two can be a bit arrogant but as long as you don't have experience with a saw and pay attention you should be ok!
  21. Of course this is right, experiance is a qualification in its own right, however, a lad with CS 32 has the more potential to out perform a lad with just CS 31
  22. I gotta say mate I know I'm a lil late but the CS 32 qual is definatly the qual that made me into a good professional the skills that you are tought in this course deffinatly separate you from the tree fellers that have only done CS31 (no offence) CS 33 large trees I believe I really would like to do this even though I have felled many large trees and dont really know how much worth it would be, but I'm sure I could still earn a good few skills!
