  1. How about 'what's on your chart today' - sorry Spud:thumbup1: I got into weather from working on oil tankers - well there's not much else to do looking out of the ships bar window. Fasinating subject affects us all everyday - so might as well study it. I always look out the the South East weather - not that I live there but I can get to see what bra the weather chick is wearing:sneaky2:
  2. Just looked on the met office chart and it forecasts a low of 960 mb north of Scotland - hasn't been that low for a long time. With no big winds for so long, none in September which could mean alot of weak boughs down. Driving along a local lane a few yrs ago found a big larch across the road with a local farmer trying his best so gave him a hand, only to get loadsa obuse from all the drivers - they though I was from the council so its ok to obuse me - cleared the tree up, but never again.
  3. more than that as a registered nurse she should help out at an accident or risk getting struck off the UKCC register - no register = no work. That's the real reason she wanted to opt out - do her mate.
  4. Good point about air fliters blocking - all my Stihl will soon block up their air filters but when I bought an old 266XP with x4 screws to access the air filter I thought what a pain but for some reason it doesn't block up the air filter. Have other found the same?
  5. Are you sure it's being so far North that's the problem with your old 260 I fitted an 8T sprocket to my 280 - really made an improvement, must try it on the 260 - worth a try
  6. Brill saw, never go to the woods without one, even my dog has one - see picture But I did see one old boy, chain smoker coughing away when using his old 026, which was doing the same belching smoke and misfiring - lovely pair:sneaky2: Did wonder if he tuned his saw that way:001_tt2:
  7. used something simular after I left a log with resin on by the fire and a dog used it as a pillow = sticky head, worked well (couldn't use any solvent)
  8. According to alot of 'groundies' - a good climber, is one that lets you clear one branch away before dropping the next on top of you.
  9. I have used old oak hangups so dry after 20 yrs that burnt like softwood. I try and split 'n' stack before easter for the following winter and all is ok, in my logburner (stack hardly need cleaning). I have used wet wood (wrong pile) that even with alot of extra air is slow to burn and noticed all the embers have burnt up, whereas if the wood is dry the ember level with dry oak is a constant if not building up during the evening. Yep in theory stack oak for 2 yrs but I don't have the space so I find, getting all the oak in by easter and any ash later works for me.
  10. I use the 'hippy knot' - well hippy showed me how to tie it. It really works on high load and comes undone easy. (it may have another name - bit like some old sailor hitches) Basicly double back the rope allow say 10ft - wrap the doubled rope around the tree twice, then wrap the doubled rope around the pulling line again a couple of times then tuck it in when you doubled it around the tree (you can even tie another rope around the end of the tail, so it can be pulled out as if used for lifting, I used it to errect a sort of totem pole once)
  11. Well don't tell anybody, but Michael Fish said it's going to be a mild winter:001_huh:
  12. How about; 'there's going to be a shortage of firewood before Xmas'
  13. Spot on, one example was a truck driver dropping off some road signs to a site my son was working on. The trucker told him, 30 yrs ago all he needed was a HGV but now he has a whole wallet full of different tickets all to do the same job. It's not the regs I have a problem with, it's the rafts of different authorities. I read an article in a gamekeeper mag on all the regs to dispose of a rat. But there's more, anybody with an under 18 yr old on site could be subject to child protection regs, on it goes. I can't see how a small company can compete and comply with ever increasing rules, laws & regs that often have no logic. Rant over:thumbup1:
  14. There was a 80% chance of getting a Xmas card after my son fitted sports cans to his XT660R - he thinks baffles are for girls, reduced to 40% when we left him at home for our hols, he asked if he could have a few friends around for a quite drink - yep they called the police out at 3:00am. Now it's > 10% when I emptied my saws by firing up x6 saws at the same time. trying to find a Xmas card that makes chainsaw noise to send to them:001_tt2: Back to MS390 as it has a muffler outlet plate with x3 screws over the exhaust, I will make up a spacer plate with less holes so it can be refitted back to std and re-tuned back so the saw can still be used in gardens. Most of my saw work is on a large country estate.
  15. My day job is medical engineering where once if the childrens ward needed a spare infusion pump I could find and check one for them but now it's down to a infusion committee to agree the drug protocol, have the staff all had product training, plus loadsa other medical issues that seam to tread on alot of feet to sort out. Result some sick kid has to be transfered 25 miles because I can't let the staff use a later safer type of infusion pump because the infusion committee have taken 2 yrs to sort out if the staff can use it.
  16. Is this why only big companies can go for these jobs as they have a 'Geek' to sort it all out:confused1:
  17. OK Normandylumberjack you go first and if I don't see a 'dear Spud' post, I will do mine:sneaky2: No only joking, cut4fun really cleared up what to do. I looked on Mistersolutions Stihl spares and it lists x2 muffler covers one US (as seen on cut4fun's post) and one for UK, next time I put an order in will inc the US cover. I will do my MS390 being old and the twin port mod to the MS460 later.
  18. many thanks Martin - will get one soon:thumbup1: After reading various posts feel the need to be more accurate with my saw tuning.
  19. so I was told the 47 winter was a late one - worse than the 62/3, which started on Boxing day and lasted until March. I remember that one as I had a new fishing rod for xmas, dad said wait until boxing day - oh it's snowing, wont last long, canal & rivers frozen for 3 months - gave up fishing brought a gun:lol:
  20. If you are about to take your CS30/31, my tip is to buy a semi chain as a new full chain will jump about a bit when doing letterboxing, whereas the semi will give you much more control. OK I don't do as much as others but I have found it all in saw sharpening technique. I do a large sharpening session with chains finally set not by a gauge but by how well they cut, then do a box full of spare chains (old ones for stumps). So if I'm working and a chain goes blunt, it's just a case of swopping over - ex boy scout:thumbup1:
  21. Many thanks - I tend to think of the Welsh border area for Mistletoe and old fruitwood, I remember something about a market for mistletoe near Leominster. But it's not normally seen around our area North Oxon
  22. Many thanks 'Cut4fun' that clears it up. Haven't done alot with 2strokes over the years, only remember the exhaust back pressure hold back the gas mix for the next firing as with reverse cone exhaust pipes on race bikes and seeing pictures of them being tuned by cutting the lenght of the exhaust pipe - so do you tune by making the holes bigger and try to stop at peak power. I can proportion the holes needed from your picture - thanks again:thumbup1:
  23. Lad out working today and they found Mistletoe growing on Hawthorn - nearly went into the chipper, nice big amount. Is it normal to grow on Hawthorn, tend to think of oak & druids:001_huh:
  24. Can we rearrange the above words to understand:sneaky2: Enjoy it while you can before age really kicks in, then it's like trying to push a 'march mallow into a money box' I'm 62 still do everything but a bit less energy - don't believe that 62 is the new 31:lol:
