Bugs, bees and beasties- Bio-diversity matters

Saw this beastly Garden Cross back after strimming and raking a wildflower bank. We noticed lots of frogs, toads, 3 Grass Snakes and 2 Common Lizards as we raked the grass. -
I spotted this in a friends garden. The was there when he moved in and he will leave it as its quite a querky looking tree.

I had a powersharp chain snap on me today as i was felling small willows from an attenuation pond. Worryingly it shot forward and slammed into the grass. I wasn't sure who was more scared me or my collague who was 6 feet away and dragging brash.

It has been sent to the main Stihl dealer in the UK for them to have a look at as our dealer has spent 24 hours (4 6 hours days) stripping it , replacing parts all to no avail. We have been told it may be the gasket between the carb and block as it only seemed to idle funny when on tickover. As soon as throttle was applied it was sound as a pound.

Not strictly tree related but countryside related

On a lighter note we've been installing routed Oak boards (made by us) today. They were installed as members of the public had complained about the two steep descents at Gains Cross and the fact there wasnt a sign warning you of a road at the bottom of a slope. -
On our sites last year we used a walk behind fertilizer spreader. It worked well on the wider paths and on the trailways but we had to resort to hand scattering on the narrower paths.

My bad:blushing:. Was getting the two mixed up:blushing:

What about neighbouring Leylandii hedges that are 50ft+ tall and blocking natural light into your home?

Right to light regs? Small FB that turned out to be beneficial to the tree?

These pictures were taken by my boss on a piece of land adjacent to ours. All of the Horse Chesnuts have been hit hard this year by the little blighters. Please note the one that hasnt been affected at all. It is an Indian Chestnut.

Too me it looks like it had an intense white rotter at play. The dodgy union would have been playing a role with its demise but if the wood was still sound (i.e. no rot) then it would have held up for a long time to come. The fibres would have been alot more visible in the failure too if no rot was present. I think a Phellinus spp may have got in there or even a Ganoderma but it hasnt shown any fruiting bodies yet. Edit: Was writing as Hama posted:001_tt2: -

Yet another day of mowing Castle Hill. We had 3 complaints about us launching the cuttings down the wooded slopes. We had been asked to cut and remove from the monument and lose it on site so we did. Hoping to go back to the site in a few weeks to take out the edge stuff as it is fairly woody and would be easier to burn on site.

This week i did a 3 day heathland course based around Lowland Heaths. I knew the basics about heaths but nothing about the many different species you can get on the sites other than the usual heath, gorse and various grasses. Here are a few pictures of the various species found on our local heaths. Pic 1 - Bell Heather - Erica cinerea Pics 2,3+4 - Heath Milkwort Polygala serpyllifolia Pic 5 - Cross-leaved Heath - Erica tetralix Pics 6+7 - Ling - Calluna vulgaris Pics 8+9 - Oblong-leaved Sundew - Dosera intermedia Pics 10+11 - Marsh Gentian - Gentiana pneumonanthe Pics 12+13 - Bog Asphodel - Narthecium ossifragum Pics 14+15 - Dorset Heath - Erica ciliaris

Here is a few pictures of the first tree with I. dryadeus nestled in the butresses and a couple of pictures of the cavity showing a large number of Ganoderma brackets all with fresh spore layers.

We have Insa Turbo Dakar remoulds on our 110. They are BFG Mud terrain remoulds but only about 65 quid a tyre as opposed to 130 quid.

Four 5 litre Demijons full of Sloe gin. Three 5 litre Demijon full of Damson Vodka. Two 3 litre jugs full of Raspberry and Blackberry Whisky. And a 25 litre cask of Sloe gin that has been stored for 12 years. The 12 year old gin is potent enough to get a flame on top. We only bring it out on special shoot days if it especially cold.
