    IDing fungi

Yep, Coprinus sp, probably micaceous. Have a look in the fungi directory tab at the top of the page.
  2. Crossbow does look very good what is the estate, looks really nice. And if you don't mind me asking (and you telling!) what was the grant?
  3. Does look a sweet job why were they lifted and dead wooded? Looks like the middle of nowhere!
  4. Just terrible for all involved. RIP
  5. One of arbtalks finer moments respect and a big well done to everyone involved!
  6. This thread really restores my faith in humanity! Well done everyone
  7. What a fantastic photo, tree and view! Well worth a scramble...
  8. It's upgrade time, two years I've had this HTC desire apparently, time flies! Anyway, I can't decide to keep this phone or upgrade. I'm tempted by the galaxy note, but its pricey, maybe gimmicky, and I have a laptop. The galaxy s3 scares me! But the s2 I like the look of, a lot; big screen and decent camera Ive had iPhone and tried the latest nokias and don't rate them, so ill be sticking with Android whatever. I welcome any comments, suggestions and experiences, thank you all......
  9. Don't think its walnut, I can't see the chambered pith in the centre. Could be anything!? Alder perhaps?
  10. Some comments on another thread regarding L. sulphureus on yew got me wondering about other toxic trees. For example I once found a bumper crop of P. ostreatus on laburnum, but didn't dare eat them in case they took on the trees toxins. Are there any other examples of edible fungi becoming indelible as a result of their host species? Thank you....
  11. Firstly apologies for the poor pics taken on my phone. I noticed this roadside ash near to where I live is showing odd symptoms, hopefully you can make out some detail in the pics... I didn't think to get a context shot, but overall the tree looks ok. Scattered throughout the crown some shoots and leaves are stunted, thin and distorted, while the rest are fine. The tree is about 20 feet tall, and well surrounded with concrete. My intitial thought was aphid or some other sap sucker, but can see no evidence of this. Nutrient deficiency maybe, but wouldn't that affect the whole crown? Any thoughts welcome as I'm a little curious, cheers
  12. How big cloud1, there is a how big forum on arbtalk...
  13. Yep, I don't agree with that either...
  14. Seriously? Yeah it would be great if all our big ash died and needed removing. Think of the firewood and extra work, who gives a hoot about the loss of em! (I can type bold, italic and underlined; where do I make it sarcastic?) I'm not so sure, what if we introduce a problem elsewhere? Let's keep ours, and they can keep theirs. Some import/exports should be restricted more, even if global trade has gone on for centuries. Maybe importing and growing seeds Victorian style would be less harmful to our ecosystems; however, look at knotweed... I'd have said it is a native species, of non native provence. But stand to be corrected...
  15. I seem to remember Gerrit warning us to be on the look out for Chalara, its a bit worrying... why the hell do we need to import ash trees anyway?! How many non natives causing huge problems have we had through imports in the last 50, or even just 10 years? It's frightening, and somewhat preventable

Good points, however I am pretty certain the presence of toxic salts in builders sand is mentioned in BS5837: 2005, can't recall if it is mentioned in the new document though...
  18. Wow, fine looking blades if you do have a go let us all see how it comes out...
  19. I've heart of bars used, how would a chain work? Very little knives I suppose

It can, I believe, contain salts toxic to roots
  21. Interesting. I wonder what other obscure details have been questioned in the past
  22. Am I missing something here? Lonsdales principles of tree hazard assessment and the last 5837 pro forma (there isn't one in the latest, and I don't think it is mentioned) specifically suggest commenting on the weather at the time of surveying trees. Can anyone enlighten me as to why? Surely if any adverse weather conditions affected the survey it would be commented on as a separate issue, so why include it as standard? Thanks in advance, Kev...
  23. Congratulations had our second a week ago, three weeks early which was a surprise!. Both home water births, no drugs, not even gas and air. Very proud of my wife I can't bear the thought of choosing to have your baby in hospital, so clinical and impersonal, much better off at home where you have everything and can stay calm. Prepare yourself for some serious sleep deprivation and mood swings; now would be a good time to learn to bite your tongue good luck.....
  24. There was a post on here a while back where someone had done a fantastic owl carving on a live (cedar?) tree. Maybe someone who remembers could link to it? Carving cut faces on pruned branches, like above, would do no harm; if the branch were being removed anyway. I think carving live trees could work in some situations, although I certainly wouldn't recommend it on a tree of any value! Maybe if veteranizing trees for wildlife value or making a feature of trees being ring barked for haloing purposes, it could be done. Maybe even better if used as a way of highlighting issues and creating a talking point to further inform visitors to a site of any reasons for works etc.
  25. If it is oyster then it is only weakly parasitic (in winter when the trees defenses are down), and I think prefers dead wood. I don't often see it fruit this time of year and with just the one pic, don't take my word for it as a definitive ID. Is it just the one tree with half a dead crown, is it actually dead or dying? Do the other trees have the same 'half crown' symptoms, on the same side of them? Is the root damage on the same side as the crown symptoms? Is the dead/dying crown scattered branches, or everything beyond a certain major scaffold branch? What is the fate of said trees?
