I don't blame you for wanting to stay up there - North of Ullapool is my very favourite part of Scotland. Like Tom says - would it be worth contacting local estates? There are quite a few areas of forestry just south of Ullapool that might yield something.

It did look like a handy little thing - bigger than an Alstor but much smaller than your usual forwarders. Someone got a bargain!

We have a Rayburn and a stove. The Rayburn is a recent installation. Between the two we get through a cubic metre every 7-10 days. House is bloody warm though, regardless of temperature outside.

Hair cut. Long hair and arboricultural/forestry work just don't mix. Can you imagine the resin build up if you were working with softwoods regularly?!

I usually just drink ale (but do enjoy fruit gins, and increasingly, good whisky) and have one, occasionally 2 a night. 10 pints a week I would say. It's one of my very favourite things and I look forward to it.

No disadvantage - common forestry practice (brashing). Try to avoid scuffing the bark too much but keep the pegs as flush as possible to the stem.

Thanks for all the help chaps! I'm actually lucky that I don't need to find a customer as I already have one for the full load. I just need to figure out what to charge them. I'll propose £40 a tonne roadside and see where it goes. Jonathan -
Just looking for an idea of what to charge for excellent quality larch sawlogs. I have about 25 tonnes of 12-18 inch diameter logs, straight and clean. If anyone can give me an idea of what to price them at, it would be appreciated!

We need small scale timber extraction on an estate near Edinburgh. Our regular forwarder operator has always been unreliable, but very good when here. It's now at the point where it's going to affect future cutting, so I need to sort out alternative cover. There is a need for an average of 200 tonnes a month to be extracted. Up until now it's been an Alstor 8x8, and it would need to be a similar sized machine to access the stands. Cordwood is usually 3.5m in length and up to a third of a tonne a stick, exceptionally a little more. Terrain is varied but not too bad generally. Almost exclusively hardwood. I can provide insurance or you can. Immediate start required and work ongoing for foreseeable future. Please pm for more details. Jonathan

I've been using a Lumbermate 2000 very kindly lent to me for the last month or two. So far only cut larch on it and it's been quite difficult at times. I would urge you to exercise a little caution as they are very light weight machines - whilst mobile it's insufficiently rigid to be easily and quickly set up for milling. Additionally, due to this lack of rigidity, it does seem to allow a degree of oscillation and subsequently bands snap. Living with the mill for the past two months has been very useful, but only strengthened my resolve for a fully hydraulic mill. Jonathan

Good to see you posting on the forums again Peckerwoo - for a minute there we were all forced to look at Metcheck! I for one am really looking forward to a bit of cold. I don't sell logs and snow makes the sawmilling tricky, but I look a good frost. Without it, it's just not winter. And winter is rapidly becoming my favourite season!
