Bloody stupid woman. We have 1200 ewes on the estate here and despite the fact that our dog leaves the sheep well alone, we don't go anywhere near the sheep for at least 6 weeks before lambing. As you say, she won't be happy when it's shot.

I've been using my DCS7901 quite a lot lately (Makita branded Dolmar) on a 24 inch bar and it's bloody lovely. Having used an MS460, I would pick up the Makita every time. Blue blue blue! -

Lycetts Robert. When I had your Shogun, they were the cheapest by miles and I've got all my insurances with them now. I've got the 11 plate Navara insured, fully comp, all drivers over 25 insured, tiny excess, no mileage limit, full business use and me aged 27 with only three years no claims at £690.

Love the Chopin studies. Favourites are opus 10, numbers 3, 5 and 12 and opus 25, numbers 5, 9 and 12. You are probably best looking in the US. We just don't have enough manufacturers here. Researching the US and Canada, there are nearly 80 odd different saw manufacturers and they are a whole lot less pricey than here. It's only a year old! All covered under warranty, but a major PITA. I know all the guys at the garage and Nissan UK customer service on first name terms and next week's conversation might well start along the lines of: "Hi Jason (excessively nice customer service chap) - how was your weekend? Now the Navara is sporting the engine management light again, and yes, it's still clunking from the front right. Isn't it about time we just gave up on this car and got another one?!"

You're all wrong! Navaras for the win! Oh wait, hang on a second.....they are completely crap and break down constantly (13 trips to garage in 12 months)! If I was getting a truck again it would be a G wagon.

We had 25 tonnes of timber from Helmdon earlier this year - good quality stuff at a very good price. If you get your own timber to him, he will mill is for around £1.25 plus VAT a cubic foot if memory serves. He is hard to reach, but worth the effort.

In all seriousness, I've found that for ringing up firewood bigger is always better. Seems to me that for each doubling of horsepower, cutting speed seems to increase four fold (so 50% more power seems to equal twice the cutting speed). 8.7hp on an 18 inch bar equals vast productivity, albeit at the expense of the feeling in your fingers!

Thirsty John! Tank holds 1.2l and empties in 40 odd minutes. So realistically 10l a day. Pennies compared to the physiotherapy required to maintain such a physical output though!

Thanks for the recommendation Harvey! Service from Woodmizer thus far has been fine in terms of getting parts to me. Technical support has been a bit patchy thus far and the only truly useful people have been the local rep and the original owner. They are complicated and complex machines. Versatile, but a lot to go wrong. I'll hold onto mine for a year or so and then get something bigger I think.

044 would probably be too big actually. It's mostly 40-60cc territory hardwood thinning. -
Got a Woodmizer LT40 for the time being. Had it nearly 4 weeks, done 52 hours on it and it's been a learning curve. A lot of maintenance, a lot of things to keep an eye on. Cuts well so long as you are diligent. That's not to say I've not cut some crap boards, but it's mostly been my fault when I have. If money were no object, I'd import something monstrous and American.

Can be cut, vacuum kiln dried and machined to order within a 2 week timescale. Let me know what you need and if you are interested.

No, needs to be Monday to Friday unfortunately in order to fit in with other cutters and the normal work on the estate. Thankyou for enquiring though! -
I had a 17 inch bar for my 088 once. By christ, that was a set up for ringing up. You no sooner had the bar in the wood than it was out the other side. Basically, you could do a full day's firewood cutting before lunch, but you needed the afternoon to recover! Jonathan

Very good video Rob - you've got too much time on your hands! Lovely bit of walnut and looking forward to getting the metal detector. After chatting to you the other day, I did my first day's contract milling and had to chuck quite a nice lump of elm off the mill to be firewooded as it had three clusters of three 5 inch nails in it. Talk about a band wrecker!

Not that I am aware of. I milled a large lump (25ft x 3ft) earlier in the year and it's currently air drying horizontally. By all accounts, it seems to go a golden colour once dried anyway. Mill it thick if you are wanting to sell it as the primary market for it are carvers. Jonathan

Sounds like a very good idea! I bought some timber from a mill in Northamptonshire (nice and central) not long back. The chap there has been milling for nearly 50 years. Lovely bloke and might be worth 'hiring' for the day to pick his brain. In addition to that, it's the most wonderful sawmill you have seen in your entire life with thousands of tons of butts at any one time. Jonathan
