  1. This is my mate Cyril. Leave him alone!
  2. Just chucking my hat into the ring. As an ex (many years ago) database man (IBM DB2 and Microsoft Access) I woke up in a sweat this morning wondering if a lot of this political madness can be defined (and possibly partly rectified) by applying some of the database design principles to the current insane position. I don't want to make a pillock of myself (that's new) so wanted to bounce my ideas around. Anyone interested? PS Database theory is soooooo boring to those outside it I wouldn't want to waste people's time with a boring set of definitions.
  3. They are doing meore than reproduce - They 'breathe', feed, grow, move, respond to a stimulus (all be it very slowly), they excrete, reproduce, die (maybe another one - can't remember). These are the characteristics of every living organism on the planet. Maybe except for people in Durrington.
  4. Dropping sap/needles/leaves on my car. Dropping fruit on the path which causes me to fall over. Make my wooden decking slippery to walk on. Take up all the light. Limit the width of my drive so I have to look carefully before I pull out. The roots head straight for the drains and foundations then bore straight through them. They give a home for those ###kin animals that **** all over my car. They drop dead branches (some over half an inch thick) - they could kill someone. They wave about in the wind. They cost a fortune to maintain, all the tree surgeons round here can afford to eat! Down with em I say
  5. A photo of the remaining canopy would be a help. It will depend on where all the weight is, prevailing winds and the extent of damage caused by the failure - to name but a few. Maybe a piccie of the other side of the tree, showing the damage. I suspect you will get lots of good advice. Also, where are you ?

    Waste of space.

Brushwood - and any chogged timber which is less popular for logging. No more arguements about which is the best chipper, no more overload worries. Where can I get one?
  7. old 8ft x 4ft ply sheets - even double up with a bit of brushwood in between. Also gives the customer the chance to make a witty comment about the big sandwich. Not too heavy, and you can adjust the spring factor by adding brushwood.

All very funny, except for any English visitors/business folk/workers in Argentina trying to make a success. Clarkson is Just a big celebrity gob-shite who will do anything for publicity. PS I enjoy the car bits and a lot of the humour but they just act like undergraduates.
  9. Funny how all those who defined this TPO application sniping as 'healthy competition' are conspicuous by their absence from this thread. It IS a free market - my conclusion is the sort of person who frigs about like this to get the cheapest price can go get the cheapest cos I hate working for such people. Will they try to haggle at invoice time as well? Probably but if I don't work for them it don't matter.
  10. If you can break down the effort in a number of days -allowing for any extra disposal costs then multiply that by 'the day rate' A day rate depends on loads of things, listed above and on previous threads. I know a guy in Worthing who charges £2k per day for a two man team (then subs it out and makes big bucks while cultivating his big fat arsenal). Some people will slave away all day with a team and charge £300 - they don't last so long or soon realise they can make more than that. Some large companies charge towards £1k per day. Some.... Some... You get the idea. If I were you I would find a friend with a big tree and get them to call a few tree surgeons round to get quotes - that will give you an idea of local competition/prices.
  11. If you want to expand a bit and do more trees than you need logs from.... will you start to charge for the work? All the time you are doing it for free just for the logs that's fair enough. If you really enjoy it and would like to do a bit for money and 'see where it takes you' then you should get yourself insured. As for doing it safely... that should be the case already. Doing the essential CS units will give you the bits of paper to show proficiency in the event of any problems or HSE drop in inspection. There have been threads on here recently regarding unqualified working and people competing with tree surgeons 'just for logs'. These topics provoke some heated discussions. Whatever you do, stay within your comfort zone and do it safely at all costs. A bit of training and insurance is money well spent. Very few people have deliberately cocked things up big time.
  12. Well this LA corruption (sounds like a Richie Blackmore song) looks really bad, it almost looks like TPO work isn't worth doing. If the council don't nick it from you there's always the 'snipers' who read the local papers and see no problem with competing any way they can. There are R soles everywhere - all you can do is keep your own principles and get on with it as best you can.
  13. My brother loved his neighbour, as a result he's now divorced.
  14. About 80. I know I'm not young but there's a limit.
  15. While discussing a large hedge reduction with a very upper-class customer (he actually sounds just like Prince Charles) he asked me (with his wife present)... 'Do you swing'? After a very long and embarrassing silence he explained 'When you cut it will you be swinging on ropes'? Phew!
  16. This is starting to look like a very strange cry for help. If he's had an awful accident can someone nearby contact him?
  17. The ivy and the weeds grow over from next door. A friend of mine did it, but I don't think he really knew what he was doing - can you just finish it off please? I usually do it myself but thought I'd see if anyone else can do it for a reasonable price so I don't have to. You must really enjoy being outside on these lovely hot days.
  18. Where do the chippings go? Is that an elctric top handle saw?????
  19. Good luck to him. If there are people out there who will buy like this then maybe the log boys need to simplify and start making real money??
