  1. came across sorry little fella (weeping ash) today in a pub beer garden, had all sorts wrong with it. was like looking at the drawing of the tree on the cover of matthecks VTA Feild Guide haha sorry gone a bit overboard with the pics
  2. thanks guys that's a big help. it appears that i can become a tech member of the AA with my ND and get discounts on seminars etc. as the ND and tech cert are both level 3 courses, is there any need to to the tech cert? or would it be more beneficial to progress to a level 4 course or higher? also: if, for example, i were to go to the woods and VTA/ inspect a tree and record my findings, as practice, would this count towards my CPD? work based development maybe? thanks again
  3. wonder how he did the sides
  4. this may be a thick question but i honestly don't know the answer. regarding continued professional development- asides from lectures/ seminars, what "counts" as cpd? my goals include gaining a tech cert and having a career on the more "academic" side, possibly involving tree inspections and the like. i am going to start attending lectures and seminars but i want to know what i could be doing in the meantime to help my development. any recommended reading materials? studies/investigations of trees off your own back, does this count? does hours and hours of arbtalk count? sorry if the question is a little clumsy. i just thought i don't want to turn around in 10 years time and think "i could have done so much in that time" thanks
  5. ps. thanks for the help everyone
  6. cheers, i have some questions about CPD which i will post up in a new thread. looks like the tech cert is the best choice then:thumbup1:
  7. i used adwords for a while. you need to spend a fair bit just to get your clicks, and not every click turns into a job of course. i think you need to have a really spot on website for it to work, and getting the right keywords is important too. i spent loads on it and only achieved 2-4 clicks per day, none of which generated an enquiry. i wouldnt reccomend it personally
  8. i agree with Tony re the regrowth, but im more interested in the tree in your avatar!
  9. thanks for the encouragement mate i have been looking into doing some higher qualifications for example tech cert, cert arb, hnd, but i would need to save up a fair bit of money to do these courses. it is definately something i want to do in the future, i naturally lean more towards the academic side of things, and im never gonna be the worlds best climber. would you say cert arb is the best progression route from the ND? cheers, chris
  10. i think its the experience i am lacking in as far as inspections etc are concerned. im gonna pass on it anyway
  11. thats the thing- i think it would depend on the situation. the are certain areas i am confident in and others not so much.
  12. i know it i know it! haha wicked pics
  13. the ND is a level 3 course. i think, to be honest, it would totally depend on the circumstances and if i thought it was out of my league i would pass on the job.
  14. i see what your saying treesurfer. up until now i presumed that my ND, with its surveying, inspections and reports units, qtra, vta, , mattheck, shigo, helliwell system, etc etc, was "up to spec". of course i am aware that there are higher qualifications i could get in this field, but i thought that my qualifications would at least cover doing some of this work. after all, whats the point of teaching it if i cant use it in the real world? can anyone confirm what the ND arb actually allows you to do? looks like im gonna have to change my website...
  15. thanks for the replies. i don't have professional indemnity so i wont be going ahead with the report. its just that we did units on surveys and inspections on single and groups of trees at college, including inspections of mature trees involving climbing etc etc. i assumed that because i learned to do inspections as part of my course, means i am now "qualified" to do it? im clearly wrong and it sounds like a lot of bother to be fair.
  16. got a call today from a local estate agent who wants to me to come have a look at a tree at one of their properties. 15m English elm (?) 5 meters from house has been regularly pruned back for the last 10 years. basically the guy who is buying the house, is concerned that it might fall over so he wants it checked out. he also needs a written report (to show his lenders) detailing the health of the tree and any recommendations for works. no pics as of yet as i am going to have a first look at it tomorrow. basically i need advice on: how to price a "report" (by the hour? per page? ) ? any terms and conditions/ disclaimers you would recommend putting in the report? thats all i can think of at the moment, at least til I've looked at the tree. thanks guys
  17. all aspects of lopping and topping
  18. "the band" by "the band" and anything by fleetwood mac.
  19. full resurrection? do you ever find any rare species in your monos? how would this affect the management of the site? for example if a rare bat was found, would you create more bat specific habitats in the immediate area, to encourage more to move in? nice pics btw
  20. yup, the one on the right from pic 4. the brackets were emerging all the way round the stump. very fresh and corky. the last pic shows two brackets fused together- but interestingly, the gills of each have sort of interconnected into the same "maze". that is one of the few fungi i find easy to id!
  21. thanks for the reply monkey d, really interesting sounds like the whole place is on a constant, flowing management plan. as you are quite obviously keen on creating these monos for habitat, do you ever feel guilty about destroying them?
  22. more pics! from a walk out this morning

    Fire fox

quick question- i use fire fox and it signs me out of arbtalk constantly, like every five minutes. it doesn't do this on any other sites (face book, email etc). is there any way i can stop it from signing me out all the time?
  24. not really, i use those big rubbery buckets from b&q
  25. i travel to every job swinging from tree to tree, without ever touching the ground, so my gear is always in use, thus eliminating the need to carry any kit.
