  1. Made. Made by growing up before them video game things were invented. Made by living on the edge of Dartmoor with nothing much else to do but mess about with my mates up trees to see who could climb the highest, the furthest out, the hardest (or the longest before going to A+E). TBH though, of all the trips i've ever had to A+E, i've never gone due to falling out of a tree.
  2. Not a 101. Looks like the kind of thing the Belgium army would run about in. You would think it was Handy thou. (well, turns out to be as handy as a swimming pool in the garden )
  3. Great work. If often feels like heading up a tree gang is like running a "playskool" operation.
  4. ...now then, where did I leave that woodchip pelleting machine...
  5. Nah. I only do a few windups on the side, part time like. Don't bother with the insurance (bit of a cowboy, see). D' you reckon watchdog might be interested?
  6. I can think of some "climbers" who are far lower in skill than you average groundsmen, and therefore make the groundys job A) more dangerous and B) far harder. Why are they climbers then? I hear you ask. Mainly because if they wanted to get on in the industry, and earn more, the career plan requires them to climb. Gimme a skilled groundy anyday.
  7. if you really are going to get a 4x4, go for one with a proper low box. Currently driving about in a freelander 2 and an X-trail. Both have got 6 gears, but neither have a low box which I reckon is a total flaw. I would go for something a little bigger (disco / isuzu) with a proper box and proper ground clearance. Depending on how you drive, you won't loose much in MPG.
  8. I'm stuck in the office at present..... .....Got to have some sport
  9. Hi Chris, If you feel the need to have insurance to kick a ball about in the park, or fly a kite, then I suppose you will feel the need to insure youself if you climb a tree. Otherwise, I would bother
  10. Its simply down to supply and demand. Its a job that ticks all the boxes for a certain type of person... Outdoor job.. Bit of excitment.. Bit of "danger".. Bit "glam".. Gets you out and about.. Basically, its just old fashoned fun. Once you have got a basic set of qualifications, you will basically work for nothing in order to get some experiance (look through some of the posts of starters on here for proof). How many new pumbers would say that (after all, I wouldn't do plumming for £30K).
  11. Mucho sorry's Mr Mikedrums69... Turns out I was looking at pictures on bobbysm's post. Ah well, that will teach you both to put similar subjects on at the same time:sneaky2: Anyways, hopefully the advice will hold good for you
  12. Yeh, well done Sherlock, you smoked me out. Only been cutting trees since the late 80's. Ha Ha
  13. I remember seeing somthing similar at the arb show at Exeter years back. I think the company was called something like tech-norton. Anyone know if they are still around?
  14. I knew I would pick up some tips, excelllent. The most important one is - If you think you may get accosted by a prime -time TV camera crew, and you may wish you could just disapear through a crack in the ground, DON'T get dressed up from head to foot in Hi Vis.
  15. sorry. but that whole semi-skilled / skilled thing seemed to go on and on. I'd rather be content then wish I was regarded as skilled.
  16. (on a slightly more useful note, couldn't you mow it in a figure-of-8 shape, with the dishcharge (for the most part) going onto the prevoiusly cut swathe? A bit like they do when silaging?)
  17. sorry mate, you are totally on the wrong forum this is for highly skilled arb types. everyone here will feel you need a semi-skilled grass cutting forum
  18. Never considered a running bowline. Not a bad idea that, cheers.
  19. 'ello 'ello ' ello, Is anyone aware whether the little Red / Black "Highly Flammable" / "Flammable liquid" diamonds are a legal requirement. If so, can they point me to the relivant leglislation. The word on the street (or at least at the filling station down the road) is that the boys in blue have found this to be the latest exciting topic of choice (now they are bored of seeing what type of diesel is in the mogs). Looking for fact rather than hearsay If not, why do peeps have them stuck on the back of their arbtrucks? questions / questions / questions!
  20. Thats annoying. I have a gap on my NPTC cs card where cs33 should be, and I have always ment to fill it. I never had the need for old CS33 as I don't come across many trees that big to fell. Thought the new CS33 unit would be not only useful, but would complete my CS collection. Guess I left it too late. Rats! Is for the new unit (CS 49), It looks like this may take some time to launch, as the assessors are to go through a standard setting event / technical evaluation. I think I will leave it for a few months yet then!
  21. Found it. Really well hidden. NPTC | Latest News | Important change to Level 2 Chainsaw and Related Operations and PA4S and PA4G Update
  22. I can't seem to find anything relating to cs49 (and I can't find a search option either) Any chance of a link? Cheers
  23. Especially like the cs30 crossword. I have been toying with doing somthing similar for a while now. well done for beating me to it If you're OK for it to be handed out to my victims, I will be sure they are aware of your link. I was thinking of doing one for cs31 and for the utility arb units, Any chance they are in the pipeline :-) Cheers
  24. one swallow does not a summer (hangover*) make. *delete as nessessary
  25. Maybe one of these Eucalyptus regnans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Maybe the tasmainians have bigger mountains?
