  1. Assuming you're not winding us all up: The work was breaking with convention in other words carried out in an unorthodox manner. He should have used a bigger MEWP and pieced it down carefully in small bits: size depending on the SWL in the basket, to the finished height. It would'nt have made such a good film but that's tough. Typically you would have been cutting pieces that were liftable by the operator. Camera work was great and he talked us through it nicely but if anyone new in the game is going to fell trees 3 or 4 metres up they better get plenty of insurance. Escape route? Where was it?
  2. Crikey: Someone will have the have idea of no commenting on anyones posts at all next, unless...............
  3. There is a perfectly polite question on post 41 to answer. Thank you in anticipation, look forward to your reply. Kind Regards.
  4. How deep was it? Was it past ur eyes?
  5. As said the questions are very very funny.
  6. Crikey: I've not read that, last year was pretty bad. I've got guys complaining about the cold now, sort of Ian Lavender fashion. We better all stick some layers on. As for the anti-freeze I've not thought of that, good tip must get some.
  7. Small point: I am not sure I can stomach seeing all the big fat cat payouts and gold plated pensions dished out which will come, as sure as night and day when it's sold. Also, I remember the council house stock around here, sold off recently for around 8k a unit, (mkt value would have been x 15) are they going to give away the forests for a quick return. Better to sell small parts off for developments Like Centre Parks, rather than a reported 50% clearout. The very nature of CP's is they retain around 70% of all the trees anyhow.
  8. I often dislike posts which typically would start "I agree with Nick" but here goes: Skyhuck really sums it up. I personally don't like to view trees being felled from 12ft. up. No need for it full stop. Don't try this at home.
  9. Chill, don't be so sensitive, I thought we were all rough tough and gruff on here not snowflakes ready to melt at the slightest thing.
  10. You maybe right, was'nt the whole reason the FC came about was that during the first world war (and no I cannot remember it) we had to ship timber from around the world to us when we could have been bringing in food. The thinking was that Timber takes up a lot of room and if there is a national emergency you are going to need a source on your doorstep and a lot of it.
  11. No apologies from me, because I am an amateur film critic in my spare time.
  12. Last winter I lost 1300ltrs of oil straight into the ground. The cause, frost froze the glass bulb contents and it popped off. It could easily have been my red diesel but it just happened to be a full tank of heating oil. It has taken a specialist firm nearly 6 months to recover most of this out of the ground: basically they dig bore holes every where and then come over each day for a couple of hours and skim a few litres off the top of the water table, pump it out to a bowser then seperate it again: oil being heavier than water of course. The expense was enormous: covered by our insurance. Enviroment agency was involved from day one, but it was put down to an act of God and things did'nt get nasty. But what worried me was that the guys who recovered most of the oil said, it was an extremely common problem at the moment, where gangs roam the countryside looking for yards with tanks (nice guys I know) simply drill a hole in your tank of diesel, heating oil or such and take what they want then let the rest that they don't want drain into the soil. Reason for my tale is, though, my problem was the frost, if possible bund your tanks and be on your guard maybe only half fill them. I would'nt want anyone else to experience this.
  13. I need to hire a lorry with Hiab to pick up trunk of knotty/knurled H.Chestnut roughly 4x 3/4 pieces one day this week. It has to be this week (half term) because it's by a school playground. I have a place for the trunk 3 miles up the road.
  14. Your prediction on another thread has come true sooner than I thought; Quote: "Not a day goes by on this site without someone posting a picture/link/video to highlight alledged bad practice or making a thread to howl about the poor standards of work that they've seen". Joking aside, I still struggle with ID, but I tend to undercharge rather than over like many other contractors. As for bad workmanship, quality control is active and is busy most days. (that's me). At the end of the day if a contractor gets it wrong it's him or her that's going to feel it in the wallet no one else.
  15. Agreed and worst. But I was speaking from bitter experience having to deal with several TO's and it's like herding cats sometimes. The best work is working direct for a LA at least all the checks (in theory) have been done and I can relax. I am not keen on the £60 fee though. This will be the first step towards charging for applications and appeals.
  16. You're braver than me, don't 2 stroke engines rely on backpressure to a certain degree?
  17. The fuel 2 stroke oil mix is critical and will affect performance, check the manual. As already said it's probably best to be shown how to do the tuning as if you get it wrong !!!!! new saw.
  18. At least the bloke on the blower new what he was doing.
  19. 10 out of 10
  20. Skyhuck. Steve is a sparky now PAT testing and rewiring etc. Shame really because he was great on our Timberwolves.
  21. As said sharpness is key, but if you are unsure or not been shown how to alter the mixture settings best to leave alone or get instruction. If you run the saw too lean it's possible to do major engine damage. You can refer to your manual for basic settings; typically 1 1/4 turns out on a Stihl on the H and L the other screw is idling. I have a feeling there is a video showing you how to do it either on Arbtalk or Youtube maybe someone will post you the link.
  22. They need to get the cost of a visit down to less than fiver to reach it's true value. Some T.O.s are over promoted, overpaid and can be quite selective who they like or dislike. Typically, they can wrongly ID trees, not return calls, threaten to prosecute any tree surgeon on site and give duff advice. If you live in an area with a good one like me you are very lucky. (T.O. retired and not replaced.)
  23. Lodgic just ain't logical.
  24. By hoist, I take it you mean a MEWP. If on your own IPAF is easy to pass and lasts 5 years. This will cover you to take someone up with you as long as you are within the swl. Typically 200kgs (2 men). The MEWP must be loler tested every 6 months and you must wear a harness attached to to the anchor point. You should have someone on the ground who knows the take down procedure in an emergency too.
