  1. The generators at balmoral are 120yrs old and have only been refurbished once! Providing the beatings are greased maintained then they should generate for a long time.
  2. My main reason is power for nothing, the idea is when I retire it's one less thin to pay for, the feed in tariff is a bonus, the other option is to sell surplus directly to local farms.
  3. Totally agree but it's a lot of outlay initially, its the feed back I'm after regarding issues and problems.
  4. The old girl four weeks ago in Scotland. 14yrs old now!
  5. A brief desk top exercise for a do it yourself scheme is about 20k with about 30/35k to have it engineered and installed by a reputable company. It's about 7.5k return on the feed in tariff per year and the annual saving on power bought in.
  6. Thanks pycoed. I'll have a look and might even join the forum!
  7. Does anyone generate electricity for there own use from hydropower. I've been involved in a 500kw scheme and it's hit me thinking. I'm looking at a small 10kw set up. I've got the head and flow rates but it's extremely expensive to do although pay back would be in six years. My main reason is free sustainable power, I'm look at my future retirement and ways I can save money in the future. So if you have a system any feedback welcomed.
  8. Try this link, you'll need to download each PDF then print and get bound. http://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/publication/35034
  9. The tree in its naked form, now you can tell its a sycamore. Looking forward to your revised quote!
  10. Hi Fen, I've got a link to a 150 page grassland management handbook from English Nature and I've got some good grassland management books from the RSPB. I take it your looking to manage the land from an environmental perspective. Message me and I'll send the details so you can down load the book. I can't send it now because I'm in Scotland with limited internet access.
  11. Thanks for that, best bring the landy up then. Heading up tomorrow hopefully with the wind behind us! I've sent you a message saying to call in if passing.
  12. The good old village shop! It's surprising what you can learn from there!
  13. In all honesty Mark I know what your saying! If there's nothing wrong with it leave it alone! It's a tree as trees are meant to be!
  14. Lucky for me it's a sycamore! 😂
  15. Well your just down the road from us! We are at wood park and have just bought some land from Ironlosh! We are up on Boxing Day!
  16. I'm very fortunate to have a wee cottage and 60 acres in the Glenkin hills right on the edge of the main Galloway hills, I like the fact no body goes there and it's so isolated, most folk head north. Go there for about four weeks over the year. I need to find work up there to allow me to move north full time!
  17. The Galloway hills, in fact plan to move there!
  18. Got just under a cube from a ten year old stool yesterday. Always liked alder ideally mixed with slower burners but if you got a good supply its a great firewood, easy to cut and split. In fact I'm considering planting a few acres up for my own short term coppice firewood.
  19. I'd checked my periodically and it was only after a 6 monthly LOLER check that it was noticed, once you rub some dirt into it you see it, the other one is barely noticeable and I needed a magnifying glass to see it.
  20. Have you used it yet?😄
  21. I've always used the good old fashioned ways but was persuaded to get with the modern times!
  22. Many thanks Mark, I was advised to contact Petzl but have now learnt Lyon are the UK contacts! Should have posted on Arb talk first!
  23. No there the Mk2's we replaced the Mk1s after the first safety recall. I know the one has only been used several times, and that was by me, I climb as little as I need to these days, and I prefer my old fashioned twenty year old system! Never failed me once!😆
  24. Just had two fail there LOLER checks. Tried to email Petzl but there contact page keeps saying error so I posted on there Facebook page. What have others had to do to get them replaced.
  25. Brian James with tri axel, tipper with removable mesh sides. All aluminium sides are removable. Great in the field and on the road. Mind you not cheap and every time I put a log through the light boxes it's cost me thirty quid!
