  1. I was merely playing devils advocate but I think the most important thing or one of the most important things in any business is not to have blinkered vision.
  2. Also I would have a `B` plan cos I have heard say of two other forms of energy which believe it or not dont require you to lug wood into a store then sit around for months maybe years whilst it loses its moisture then lug it into the house and have to clean ashes and excess dust it causes from furniture .. I believe they are called gas and electricity and apparently all you do is throw a switch ...wood burning may well be a short lived novelty.
  3. I intend to start up a firewood business next season and meanwhile I am gathering stock and learning as much as possible about the business. Your question about can you make a full time living surely depends on your required income. As regards quality of supply surely it is better to offer different deals in order to enable you to offer a `prices from` option. My own intention is as a secondary income utilising my own domestic property. I also think the maketing side of the business is the most important factor even over the quality of product.
  4. Hi David I own a large old cinema in Mansfield which eventually is going to be demolished for housing but it has a problem with pigeons at the moment. If I decide to go down the route of shooting them would you be interested?
  5. I really hope that skill and talent overcomes `a big un`
  6. Sorry..sorry..I forgot.. I`m talking to arborists here.. wot wood ewe say his bestist sise four log to fit inn knet:001_smile: only kiddin:001_tongue:
  7. Looked at the logs in a B&Q net today and they are only around 6" long .. what would be the optimum size for nets?

  9. Brilliant pictures ... what software did you use .. unless they`re real
  10. I am also confident they are wrong ... I used to own petrol stations and all invoices from CPL or other coal and log suppliers charged 17.5% (as it was then) and we retailed at 5%.
  11. you dont say whether he is still in full time education.. if so dont charge him a penny .. if he does all those things you mentioned he is one in a million .. my son is just 18 I bought him a car spent the last god knows how many years running him around the country for athletics ( county champion 100 & 200 ) best all round athlete East Midlands ..introduced him to one of the best boxing instructors in the area took him there twice a week for years and he does b*g*er all for me the arrogant jumped up little P*at ... but I still love him
  12. I`ve got Ron Haslams holly tree in my woodpile that was actually his neighbours but he chopped it down cos it kept clipping the wing of his plane when he took off Wasnt working for him they just gave it me cos they know that I`ve become a saddo thats infatuated by wood:001_huh:
  13. Should have said `home` log producing kit
  14. Agree totally ... and if things dont work out you end up with the Rolls Royce of log producing kit
  15. Another point I was trying to get at is at what size is it pointless splitting the log and best left as a round log 4", 5",6"??? and if they are not split do they still season ok?...... I quite like having proper round logs around my fire and I am sure that there is a market for this.
  16. Has anyone considered some sort of wire frame to insert inside the bag to hold them in shape till full in the absence of a fork lift.
  17. Just tried that but my logs seem to be getting shorter each time and I cant play the guitar anymore:001_smile:
  18. I`m currently applying to extend a dutch barn and have been told that I do need planning. I think its dependant on use and relation to house etc.
  19. I am processing a large quantity (to me) of wood at the moment with a view to starting a firewood business next season, some of which is having to be cut to log size now. It seems 8" is the norm (probably why girls always say `ah bless` to me on our first real date:001_smile:). Am I right in this and whats the maximum depth and width I should aim at. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  20. I think safety regulations came into force awhile ago stopping builders bags being reused and thats when all the builders merchants stopped taking them back.
  21. At the moment its just me my John Deere 955. Woodline splitter and Hakki Pilke Eagle till I start to sell in maybe ten months time
