  1. as a subby - anything i'm a whore for the cash, with in certain limits, you can keep up climbing long hot days all the time, i prefer to start early and finish early but when the work and wearther is good, get it in, but yeah sundays should be a day off, not for religious reasons but you dont make any friends firing a chipper up at 9am on a sunday. THe way i try and work is long hours in spring, summer autumn and then winter take it easy, it usualy quite anyway, - last winter i sat on a beach diving for 5 weeks, this winter i'm chilling with texas buddies in the states - and sure hope to god i dont get my girlfriend pregnant else i can kiss the life style good bye.
  2. hahahha idiots who cant drive in the snow! why are the y all braking??? you just skid - muppets!
  3. keepon with the degree pal it will open a lot more doors for you. That will be more than enough - if you know your tree i'ds and fungi and such. I'd get in touch with consultancy firms -find out what they want, i reckon and you may find the work more challenging - more reporting and surveying and such. Your climbing tickets will help as well - i got offered a job as tree inspector with jut my ND - turned it down becuase when i thought about it it didnt feel right for me at the - though i'm now considering a forestry ecology and conservation course... ISA and the AA tech are both good - plus many others - in short the more you have the more chance you have of landing your dream job
  4. depends onwhat you have at the momment - how old you are - do you want to work whilst studying or can you commit to a fulltime course - and why do you want to become a council arb officer?????? whats your motivation? You have to deal with all kinds of petty bull pap from the public and such - its not a job i would stick my hanbd up for - not whilst i can earn good money as a climber
  5. Shagging - covers everything, and its more fun.
  6. December and January work always seems to get a bit quiet - febuary and march it kicks off - for all the trees with birds in there are ten more with out them and its not like in the uk where you do lots of confier hedges and such that are full of nests, and you can still prune a tree if it has a nest init as long as you dont disturb the nest.
  7. if you mean the translated tree felling team who butchered those birches up in borlange then sadly no - that was one thing those guys were spot on for was paying me what i was owed - although you my like to hear that on the grape vine the company had gone under. This is for another company in stockholmsland a smaller one - the gig started of sweet as anything really good - just 4 blokes and the boss, then he got greedy because he relised how much work we can chew through - hired a load more guys bought lods of trucks and didnt make sure he had things sorted in the office - another guy who worked with me for a bit is owed about 60'000kr - and check this i just rang the office and spoke to his daughter - turns out he flew to thailand for a nice little holiday leaving me and my mate in the crap for x-mass and new year - i'm getting the Union in on this as soon as i get back to Sweden and my pal - who is thankfuly swedish is helping me out with all the legal stuff. This Bloke is just digging a great big hole for himself, just imagine how its going to look at a hearing - so you illegaly with held money for hours worked dating back from july - leaving your employees in financial difficulty over the christmass and new year period whilst you went on a tropical holiday to thailand....oh and whats this....you called the police to prevent your own soon from reclaiming his personal climbing equipment when he left the company.....and oh you had to call the police in October to deal with a very angry employee whom you had fired and then refused to pay.. I'm going to enjoy watching this bloke squirm its just going to take time so for now i have done all i can so going to forget about it enjoy my x-mass and trip to Texas and deal with this when i come back - i wont be suprised that as soon as he gets the first call from a lawyer or the union the matter will be resolved rather sharpish.
  8. i guess it doesnt allow for sleek lines etc - the wiki link is awesome! the potential for this technology is immense! we are seeing improvements in the growing of biomass. Adavnces in Bamboo and such....I wonder if the Finish guys have plans for building they would sell. A landy word be perfect or any thing with a V6 or V8 if it could be converted would be awesome - i just wonder how long it would take for the gov to ruin it - i use to swap fire wood for bio diesel when i live on the canals. It was a peferect deal a few hours chopping and wheel borrowing wood down the towpath and i'd get my fuel for a week or two, but then the goverment made it so it was virtualy impossible for the bio diesel plant to operate even at cost as by the time they had finished it was the same cost as pump diesel - and i noticed how all of a sudden cars and vans would no longer run on the stuff....
  9. That would be Mint! strap em to a comfy chair. Jet around the tree! be perfect for reductions and tip thinning.
  10. if its being nicke in lengths then i had a thought on the chain idea - it would require fecking long chains - but, instead of what i originaly thought of which was ancoring the chains in the groun or to trees, lay the chains flat with excess either side, then once the stack is done you can pull the chains over an lock em up. how about sticking a sign on your log stacks saying these logs are private property and to remove them with out permision is theft #(this is more for the situations where people come loading up when your on site - this will put off a few people, and then if you catch some one nicking your logs, grab em and call the cops, it may be a hassle but it will stop people nicking your logs - your getting paid to remove them they arer your property - and when the old boy with the wheel barrow starts kicking off just ask him - would you walk onto a building site and nick a pile of bricks? i'm just thinking about how to stop cheeky beggars comming into ur woods and cutting up your timber - big dog??? tyre spikes? cover the stack in a blanket made of your old chainsaw trousers?
  11. Last year i got some thermal insoles and ski socks - you can buy heated insoles and heated socks - run off a battery - a lad out in stockholm got frost nip on his toes a few weeks back...
  12. Earth quakes appear to be happenng more often in the uk over recent years, it doesnt look good....earth quakes, volcanos erupting all over the place ice age happening over night..oh crikey!!!.THE END IS NIGH REPENT ALL YOUR THINGS AND SEEK FORGIVENESS FOR NOT GETTING YOUR MISSUS THAT THING SHE REALLY WANTED FOR CHRISTMASS THAT YOU FORGOT WHAT IT WAZ COZ YOU WERE WATCHING DIEHARD 2 AND NOT PAYING ATTENTION...REPENT OR BE CAST FOREVER INTO THE STEAMING BOWLS OF THE COUNCIL OFFICES WHERE DEAMONS SHALL TORMENT YOU BY FOREVER COMPLAING ABOUT A 200 YEAR OLD OAK THAT IS BLOCKING THEIR TV SIGNAL AND ENCOURAGES SQUIRRELS INTO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD BUT THEY WOULDNT MIND IF IT WERE THE NICE RED ONES BUT ITS THEM GREY IMMAGRANTS OVER HERE STEALING NUTS FROM THE LOCALS! REPENT THE END OF THE WORLD IS HERE....... do they still make kendal mint cake in kendal?
  13. it sounds like you have an idea of the culprit - do you reckon its one gang doing this
  14. how long is the stuff left for? which iklnow must vary from site to site etc - but couldnt you find some sprog to pay £50 to sit up and guard it? or....booby trap some of the logs! nothing too nasty like - paint bomb or similar, or..... what about chaining it down? burry a couple of blocks either side with a chain running over - it wont stop the determined but will disencourage the opportunists - i can only speak from the arb side of things - there has been times when it has worked out to deliberatly leave neat stacks in view for a few days, and then we wouldnt have to spend ages loading stuff up as we didnt have much room for a storage so we'd only take quality wood. I had a bloke pull up to me when we were on an emergancy call out tree falling out on a bend, i was on stop go boards he blocked my site of the other guy, he wanted some logs i told him to go forth and fornicate with as much haste as possible and hes well come to come sniff around after we have finished working. - we had a good theft on the rails last winter in Skane (south sweden) 2km of copper wiring ripped down from above the rails and vanished along with all the forwarder batteries and and harvester head, to my knowledge nothing was ever found!
  15. knew there would be a coffee brake in there some where..... Awesome stuff - the horse sledging looks mint! would love to have a crack at that!
  16. its a poor FD or accountant or infact anyone who will pass up on the chance to reduce their bill if they can, but i see the problem having to wait on other people to get their act together is no fun, and trying to get part payment upfront is only probably gonna get a few laughs from who ever you are dealing with.
  17. that looks about right for the Svennas - probably off on their way to get a coffee and a cinamon bun
  18. i say lets fell it and find out
  19. Where in Lincolnshire? have you considered contacting Riseholme agricultural collage - its where i did my ND, they have all the the kit and it would be good experience for the lads on the forestry / arb course and they'll probably be cheap.....
  20. begining or end of january?
  21. whilst the boss has suddenly relised he has an important report to right up in the office - and then tells the lads when they stagger back in frost bitten and sore how much he wishs he was back on the tools....
  22. Chainsaw Rated gloves (which i think are rated class 0 i.e they wont stop anything!) are a required piece of PPE and your employer should be providing them if you have a job and you will need them for your ticket and training. - boots buy Haix pro protectors - they cost a few quid but are the best work boot ever
  23. Would a picus reveal anything inthis scenario? or a core sample? i have seen similar buckling on horse chesnuts before - are there any trees around showing similar growth? it would be strange if it was the only one in a group like it which would point more towards structural defect rather than graft..... Also anyone think that altertaions in ground level may have caused it????
  24. What work will you be doing / are your career plans?? jacket - i was given one - lovely for bucket work and standing around in but i wouldn't buy one - Depends on your budget - if you intend to start climbing at any point get boots and type C and a climbing helmet e.g petzel - husky Helmets are good and you can get them with a chin strap and they are cheaper than the petzels. The Wellies are sound if you doing forestry not so good for arb work i reckon. Gloves come in a pair and they only need protection on the back of your left hand, will be explained on your course why...I never bought type A trousers becuase i always set oput to be a climber - they are warmer and stop crap sticking into the back of your legs but you will get toasty in summer.... There are so many different things out there you can buy but the best advice is buy the best you can afford and once you narrow down your choices you can always check on here but what works for one bloke wont work for another and often it is jsut a case when you start of buy and scavenge what you can afford and you get use to it soon enough
  25. Awesome pics. the moon still looks good tonight, shame my camera is broke...but here is a little trick for ya - the moon right now is massive isnt it?! so get a piece of paper and cut a holw big enough to see the moon through it when you hold it at arms length. Keep your moon spieing paper some where safe - then in a few months when the moon is full but high and tiny again take the piece of paper and hold it up at arms lenght and look at the moon and you will see how much it has shrunk.......
