  1. I would agree and it's only 1984 so not the dark ages. I would like to point out we were the 16 year old apprentices not the people dishing it out. I handed my notice in the week I finished my time.
  2. After my experiences my business tends to nurture youngsters too much which can be a bad thing as well. I think the men I worked with worked out which youngsters were robust and needed their egos controlling. If you were timid and behaved you were left alone. The ultimate humiliation ( which I am glad to say I never endured) was to be stripped naked your privates greased and saw dust and then gaffer taped to a lamp post in the centre of town right opposite the tsb head quarters when dozens of dolls were going to lunch
  3. Looking at my other thread about apprentice training/ punishment we have lots to be grateful for now regards h&s especially if you are a trainee.
  4. When we left school at 16 the initiation was to sing a solo Christmas carol to 200 blokes and all the office staff inc some nice looking girls. The company made aircraft catering trucks. So we were stood 10 ft up in the air . If you were lousy or too quiet empty bear cans would fly past your ear. The encouragement was sing sing or show your ring. I was not engaged and had no rings so thought best to sing:laugh1: glad I did when I see what happened to one lad. story for another day.
  5. I did my apprenticeship in an engineering works with 200 blokes. The worst they did was locking the apprentice in the propane gas locker on the side of bt lorries. Filling the cupboard with propane gas then lighting it. I laugh now but not funny at the time. You got this punishment if you were goby. I spent many weeks not needing a shave or hair cut . They were very inventive with their ideas interested to hear other people's i will put more on later.
  6. My knowledge on running welders is a bit thin as I tend to deal with big standbys for buildings. I know welders are very cruel on Gensets. I would talk to Genset in South Wales they are big into welders or mosa they should have some good info. If we have some big start up loads ie motors we install a permanent magnet generator or pm alternator. This set often has an avr and a separate transformer excitation. Means you can often install a much smaller set and once the load is running the generator is less likely to slobber on light load and glaze up the cylinders. Hope this helps if I think of anything else will post up.
  7. I may have the wrong end of the stick but how does that help the contractor improve. I would have thought that would just move the problem on to another site. The owners /managers may not realise the staff have deviated from the paperwork . Hence people who work in h&s are sometimes viewed as gestapo hell bent on putting people out of work.
  8. I think they are more likely to get killed by a passing vehicle getting in and out of the van than falling off the back. Covering the van in beacons means everyone is driving past blind and can't see the workers for all the dazzle.
  9. I think the buzz word is tool box chat or something similar. The boys in the transit have it covered I can see the driver has an iPad balanced on the steering wheel filling out the risk assessment. I think it's called mul tit tasking. A year or so ago I had my rams refused because there were no tick boxes or colour. I felt like asking the idiot if he had just left uni or play school.
  10. Well I did think cycle helmets. I am sure the correct answer will be along the lines of get in the cab at every stop or walk behind the vehicle. Standing on the back is similar to what dustmen did years ago. Standing on a greased tow bar is probably a bad idea . Are these people in a lot more risk than a kid on a skate board or push bike ?
  11. I have never been the best person to write risk assessments and method statements. I would be interested in how you would identify the risks in the video. What precautions would you put in place and how would you change the operation for the better.
  12. Again common sense should tell people a missing guard these days is a big no no, if it was not needed it would not have been fitted at production. I have said in the past I would rather use a new lifting sling that was a year out of ticket than one that just passed its test but abused for the last 3 months.
  13. I was looking at the specs unlike the who flung dung sets the Hyundai are rated for 6 kW single phase. Ie most sets are 5.2 kva = 4 kw. Also the Hyundai has a 30 hr run tank. I think the secret to long life on these small single. Cyl screamers is aim to change oil at 50 hrs but defo no more than 100 hrs and make sure it's not overloaded. You get lots of genny for the £ but they need a bit more looking after.
  14. I am considering becoming a Hyundai dealer more for the 30-120 kva stuff. They send me daily deals on there hand bags a 2kw has an rrp of about £750 +vat no idea what we will buy it in for. I also have no idea on quality yet but they have a name to protect. Not seen much in the way of reviews on line either.
  15. But if someone signed the sheet to say its done you can blame them. Thats half the reason for H&S pass the blame down the line. The other half the reason it does actually prevent accidents just not as much as it could while its administered by suits and cuff links. Train some normal working lads and it works well.
  16. Lots of organisations now dont grit their paths around buildings because if people fall they could be found negligent for not doing a good enough job. So now they dont bother put up a sign saying ice slip hazard to cover arse.
  17. It is still going down but who knows for how long. Normally the oil companies strangle it and cause a shortage and push the price. Just shows how the world economy has slowed to cause a price drop like this.
  18. That makes sense some sites we go to have a very robust professional polite and easy to deal with attitude and you can work with. They are more interested in covering and anticipating relevant information. The offices full of ex traffic wardens and door men tend to be fighting with every contractor that comes in and as you say looking for quantity rather than quality so they have something to pack out the filming cabinet.
  19. Your post has opened my eyes a bit as to why we have to create so much paperwork on large sites. They tar everyone with the same brush. Smaller customers know that I have been in the generator industry 30 years and trust my reputation and experience to get the job right first time. As someone said its down to money. Most of these larger out fits expect you to produce reams of job specific Rams at no cost to them. They have to legislate to the thickest man on site. I was begining to think I was a dinosaur now I know I am I know lots of really good engineers my age that have had enough using brain and brawn for little extra reward and they now deliver dot com groceries
  20. Since the weather went so mild for 2 years. People have forgotten already what proper winter is. I can remember in 2010 stepping outside and thinking stuff that and finding stuff indoors to do and that went on for weeks.
  21. Years ago we left school and spent 4 years being trained by a team of mature experienced men. This gave you knowledge and the ability to plan and avoid risk as you worked. I cant help feeling this sudden urge to write a manual for every operation is due to companies employing low grade untrained minimum wage staff. I fully support health and safety when its used to preserve the working mans life. Looking at why an accident happened and putting measures in place to prevent it happening again. Where its gone wrong is a huge industry of little hitlers who justify their being by creating havoc on site throwing their weight about and paying themselves huge salaries. These salaries would be better spent actually improving site conditions rather than putting up signs saying piece of wood with nail sticking up. Try picking the debris up.
  22. It's still looking cold next week on the forecast combined with wind and moisture I think it will be prolonged enough and cold enough to get things moving. Bit of white stuff gets peopl thinking it's actually winter.
  23. Could be some white fluffy stuff in the morning getting excited now. Remember I am a soft southerner we can make snow men from frost ( not even had much of that recently )
  24. You used to have to add a few options otherwise you got the 2.7 170 bop I think they now come 3.0 245 bhp so may be worth going for the cheap seats. Mine was 40 k + vat In 2010.
  25. I would say a proper old school machine . Yes later machines are nicer to use but full of electronics and joy sticks which are expensive to replace when they go wrong. I have an old 525 b with big wheels on the front and it does us proud looking to upgrade to a newer machine with 4 wheel steering.
