  1. I've read enough of your threads swb to know that you can be quite wise yourself (amongst other things...). You made the decision you did from the heart i'm sure. Less stress in your life makes you far more valuable to your wife and children. You chose your new path.....its the right one....until you come to another junction.....then choose another......that will be the right one too.
  2. Was it not possible to retain the beech as standing dead wood in the form of 4 - 5m monoliths?....Next time perhaps.
  3. choice no4.....accept that we are temporary. live each day as it comes and accept that we all have our own paths. We are all equal regardless of our occupations. We all feel pain....we all need love.
  4. I think you know exactly the best option. As you say....remove the hazard with regards the power lines. And then remove the public target. This can be achieved with fencing.....allowing the area around the tree to grow wild.etc....a couple of options. A twenty to 25% selective reduction would be fine too. If this tree was in a similar area in Richmond Park it would have a 25% reduction possibly more so on specific limbs. The power line is the issue here. deal with that.
  5. Who here is disillusioned enough to think that having passed the tech cert makes one an expert in the field of arboriculture? It is a qualification and like all qualifications it requires an ability and an amount of intelligence to retain information about a given subject. I passed my exams but that cannot replace years of experience working with trees and gaining an understanding of different tree species, properties of woods, failure rates, blah blah blah. Why put a downer on peoples achievements? And it is an achievement.

    failed pin oak

Cerris (turkey) Rubra (Red) Palustris (Pin) Robur (Pedunculate) Petraea (Sessile) Suber (Cork) Ilex (Holm) I'm sure there are probably a couple of others dotted around somewhere but I havent come across them yet.
  21. Had to deal with this today. The pin oak had co dominant stems of which one had a big failure. After tearing out it lodged itself into the fork of a neighbouring oak and its 'crown' hung up in trees further down the line. 3 hours later we were done. Small oak felled, next door pin felled and use of a hand winch and a landrover. A nice afternoon.
