  1. any recommendations for backfill for a planting pit? surrounding ground is post development, slaked clayey, gloopy and anaerobic so drainage etc has been thought of. theres no need for the soil to be structural as its a back garden location (rather than street tree) is there anyone who can supply a sandy loamy compost soil off the shelf. quantity required will be approx. 3 cubic metres. I didn't want to mix my own if I could help it. I looked at Melcourt topsoil but the pH seems a little high to me - at up to 8.2? thanks Dean
  2. thanks for your help guys, Spruce pirate you addressed the issues with spraying prior to planting that i had in mind. the only other way round this i considered was having another operator following up and spraying around the shelters or scattering a residual which would help when the weeds got to growing. I hadnt considered the weevil thanks for the links 10 bears

Sorry perhaps my post was a little misleading I have an essay to write and the question is: Describe an appropriate planting method and post planting aftercare requirements for each of the following in a given situation: • 40-60 transplant – post clear fell weed covered site. by 'chemical site preparation' I meant - do you guys tend to spray weeds before you plant in preparation, or a year down the line? for the purpose of the essay I'm going to assume that the planting is carried out relatively soon after the clear fell so isn't 6 foot deep in bramble. many thanks for the replies
  4. is it seen as best practice to spray a site to remove weeds from a clear fell site prior to planting a site with whips. or do you go in during the winter plant up then spray around them as after care? when? how often? (essay to write) many thanks Dean

  6. to update all these things have been checked and seem fine.. I'm told the next things on the list to check are the alternator and the control box. Can these be checked without having to replace them for new items?
  7. Thought I'd post this incase anyone else has the same problem in the future... From PeteB: Hey Dean, I couldn't post a response for some reason - cut and paste this if you feel the need! The device maybe reacting too fast due to a fuel issue! Check the following; Is maximum rpm being gained on the throttle? Is enough fuel getting to the engine? (blocked filters, fuel line or damaged fuel line) Is the air filter clean? Other things to check; Are the drive belts really tight? Has someone messed with the settings inside the control box?   8. Just wanted to give some praise to Dean at Global. I contacted him a couple of days ago, via email, regarding a grinder they had for sale. He replied to my enquiry very promptly sending me some pictures. I hadn't realised that he had sent me a message to let me know that he would be passing relatively near by today while delivering another machine, so when I received the message yesterday near what would probably have been the end of his working day and phoned him. There were a couple of minor issues with the machine, but rather than telling me it was too late and I'd missed my chance as he was off home for his dinner, he took my offer for purchase stayed at work, fixed the issue himself reloaded his trailer and set off. I met him at his destination and we took delivery. (I must add I was late and he didn't grumble one bit). I know what your thinking - he made a sale and two birds with one stone.... But recently I've found that I'm finding fewer and fewer companies, and their employees who are prepared to go the extra mile, even when it may benefit themselves. So I wanted to say a public thanks and a recommendation to any thinking of going Bandit. Dean obviously likes to be good at his job, and I love to see it.
  9. Ive never tried the petrol 4012 but comparing the diesel version ive used against a petrol rayco 1625 of a similar ilk - the loss of torque was noticeable - the diesel machine being more productive.

  11. Ok fine your right scotty. I struggle to install a line straight into the top of most of the trees I find myself working on and I still think it may struggle to catch on, though perhaps very common practice elsewhere in the world. I bet you've been using it all week, how have you found it.

Not sure that it is really tho Scotty [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oaSQYwMf_g]SpiderJack 2.1 - YouTube[/ame] around 11 mins 25 I appreciate that its using a spider jack but a loose hitch such as a VT or a Distell will run up a line in a similar manner if set too. not dissing the guy for having a play with climbing systems, just think its impractical, it doesn't really combine the best aspects of both systems, quite the opposite. There's all sorts of overcomplicated ways of reinventing the wheel, its the simple things/methods that actually get used day to day. this is ascending pushing two hitches up two lines using 2 pulleys as fair leads while footlocking vs pushing one prussic up two lines using your hands while footlocking. going to get complicated when you reach that first branch and want to untie the system to advance.
  13. we bought a little used one from MR Blair (SWB). It certainly has its limitations. with a bit of imagination with redirects, doubling up using pulleys etc to increase the pull its very capable. Its good at what a tirfor isnt - mainly speed but isnt as good as a tirfor for other things - for example a tirfor will pull, hold in place, then lower if required. the petrol winch doesnt have this ability - (though thinking about it you could integrate a prussic and fair lead as a 'grab'). we had three guys using it to pull rhody up a cliff for a month and it performed well at this, loads were relatively low, but the muck on the rope meant heavy wear on the drum, the hook and even the small pulley at the front of the machine, but all parts are replaceable - also the rope had to replaced a couple of times under these conditions. As I say it has its limitations, as with all kit nothing does everything, there expensive for what they are...... having said that I love it and look for an excuse to use it to make a job easier.
  14. other than having the fair-lead effect of the pulleys - what is the point over just putting a prussic over both ropes, foot locking up and switching to whichever system you want to use whether it be srt or drt?

  17. I love these little big tractors - haven't managed to justify one yet. Forgive me if its a daft question but is that just extra guarding on the front or does it have a part to play in winching/ dozing?

  21. I like the greenmechs safe track system but I'm not sure if we can rely on the support if we need it.
  22. I know, I know not another GM Vs TW type thread. but...... It may be that my arm is twisted to go over to a timberwolf tracked machine, this isnt the end of the world, our road tow is a tw and I have no problem with that - my only concern is how much I will miss the safetrack feature. how much of a difference does it make to its usability. Am I/ the guys going to roll the tw at the slightest side slope? thanks Dean

  25. Ive got it down as a heart rotter causing white rot but now Im confused - is latent/ sapwood intact correct?
