  9. a few, and my knowledge of tree parts help me search on the internet too:thumbup: i tend to use scientific sites and interpret leaf and needle and flower form from technical names rather than pictures, then when i think i have a candidate i'll use google images to see if i'm right:biggrin: tis hard going sometimes but it is much needed practice, especially when the rarer trees come up:thumbup:
  10. It’s better to plant a £10 tree in a £20 hole than to put a £20 tree in a £10 hole
  11. Ideally the planting pit should have angled sides to allow lateral roots to establsih and not girdle themselves, I'll get a diagram, hang on a sec:biggrin:

  16. Took the kids to see this last night at the Lowry in Salford on the recommendation that it was a good show from parents who'd been before. Had no idea what it was and didn't even think to look up anything about it. Turns out Slava, is a russian clown and his snowshow is a very very very good spectacle of a show:thumbup: I don't know about the kids who giggled all the way through but i had one of the best times on a night out in a long time and there was no alcohol involved! If anybody ever gets the chance to go watch him in your area or even in another country i can thoroughly recommend it, you will have a blast!! Here's a little taster and Slava's website Slava polunin [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSgLKa1MFoc]Slava's snowshow - YouTube[/ame]
  17. The flowers! Its a Clerodendrum sp., not sure which one though so going to go with C. tricotomum cv.
  18. I nearly said Sorbus thuringiaca but took a second look and realised that those where leaflets on a rachis not leaves on a stem which means its the Koelreuteria paniculata (I think thats how you spell it) Thanks Graham:thumbup:, you nearly got me then:biggrin:

  22. feel free to ask for anymore ID's and use my thread, tis all good practice:thumbup:
  23. Yep definatley Quercus ilex that first pic, the branch is a dead giveaway, new holly shoots tend to be a more "greeny" colour and less downy, and not silver under the leaf Nice tree, very heavy timber:thumbup:
  24. could also be Quercus ilex then, worth a thought then as armybloke states:thumbup: Bark is a dead giveaway between Q. ilex and Ilex sp. Better pictures of buds and bud arrangement will give me more info to work with to get a positive id:biggrin:
