Yes they seem to be common on alder, especially in a woodland situation, they grow on beech often too I think it's a bit like a benign tumour, a bud thats gone wrong and puts down layers of bark each year, completely harmless... Do you really think its wise to start diagnosing of ONE pic, and not the greatest pic at that (again no offense:biggrin:) It could be one of a number of many many things, to start throwing conclusions about is a bit silly but thats just my opinion:blush:

  18. to be honest, apart grom the BL of a few oaks, Fh and Ls also don't like to show their faces in this northern climate what also doesn't help is the topography of lancashire and the fact we are still a very much an industrial part of the country (manchester, liverpool, bolton, wigan, burnley etc etc) that the microclimate is also different too AND.... our soil conditions (check LandIS) are very different, plus lots of flood plains surrounded by the pennines and the north wales mountain range
