  1. Thats weird Kevwrenn, one of our crews have been working within a huge glasshouse managed by Greenwich Uni today, although the poor lads have been stripping Bougainvillea from the frame work, for those that aren't familiar with this beautiful, yet vicious climber, it has needle sharp inch long thorns, puts Robinia to shame, boys were cut to ribbons! although no snow worries inside the heated dome! double edge sword!!
  2. Removed a 45m Norfolk Island Pine in Perth WA when I was working there, we had two 24inch Vermeers working full time to keep up with 2 climbers stripping off the branches, so brittle, small undercut then literally touch the saw on the top of the branch, and it snaps off with a bang! then shatters as it hit the floor! the groundies earnt their money that day!
  3. Was it wedged in a fork? I've seen a cat jump into a tree fork, the wind then closed the fork and crushed the puss....snigger. Then just hung upside down and persished?
  4. They are great pics! nice one. Apparently, the Robin regularly used to flank forraging wild boars, when they were more common i the countryside, we have kind of replaced them in a way, thats why when you are turning an area of ground over, a cheeky little Robin will never be too far away, darting it to grab tasty bits and pieces. real friendly little fellas, but very terratorial, and vicious towards other Robins in their patch!
  5. Nice one woodpicker! How's the old beast of an isuzu going!? see you are loading her a little more sensibly than we used to! haha. I thought it went to Afganistan to have a gun turret mounted on its roof! all good! J
  6. The story goes, we are a medium size Co. 2xHiab trucks, 1x7.5t and 3xtransits, about 15guys, that is at our yard in Kent. We have a pile of self produced chips that AHS come and take and pay for. The non chippable/non firewood heap is about twice a year chipped by AHS with their kit shown in the pics, for free, then they take it away. They also will chip our green waste pile of sweepings, roots and bits. Its a pretty good arrangement, but creates a monster pile of chips when they've been in. They usually send an artic down during and after to collect, if they dont we could start a dryhill ski slope!
  7. Good eyes woodpicker! you've been to the yard then sir! J
  8. Evening all, Here are a few pics of the latest AHS large capacity chipper in action, newly imported from Germany, I beleive it's the first one in the country. Costs around £450,000, and folds away and drives off site each day, loads more mobile than the usual truck towing chipper, with pick up to drive home in! Awesome bit of kit with a top gun style hot seat! This was the machines first job on site, the operator was a wee bit scared dropping timber onto the shiny bits! note a wedged conifer log down to the side of the conveyor belt! Apparently registered as an agric. vehicle can run on cherry, and be driven at 16, i believe!! Not sure about the limits of timber it can chip, but its got 21 blades! would love to do a blade change on that bad boy! Enjoy:thumbup1:, sorry the quality is a bit iffy! J

  12. Evening All, The company I work for are currently carrying out a very large declining Cedar removal with a crane at the Childrens Trust, Tadworth, Surrey. The timber and main stem (well over 5ft at the base) should be made available for collection for those that can make use it. Let me know if you are interested, and I will let you know more details, crane on site, tomorrow and Friday. Thanks. Johnno. 07805 513 181.

    Oz tree ID

11th picture down is a Western Australian Peppermint, the National State tree of WA. they certainly live up to their name, and you get an amazing peppermint smell when chipped. unfortunately also home to the little biting black ants, when i was in WA, glazed a few hitches getting out of these trees super quick to strip off and get the little buggers out of places i didnt know existed! LOL.
  15. Have used a 'muck truck' whilst working in Australia. An absolutely fantastic bit of kit, the flatbed unit isnt brilliant at carrying timber however, but we got a local fabricator to construct a shaped timber carrying frame, bit like an solid oversized sack barrow with a chain to secure the load. that worked a treat! I cannot tell you haw much time, blood, sweat and tears this saved us getting heavy chuncks of Euc out of rear gardens to the hiab, and you can disregard the max weight it can carry too, we had ours fully loaded with some monster loads and it didnt grumble once! I wasnt sure if they were available in the UK tbh, dont know how much they cost, but seriously they are brilliant. one tip is to switch off the fuel tap when not in use, the only slight niggle, but overall. awsome!! can send you a sketch of the timber jig if required, be interested in prices for these if you have too. J
  16. Hi all, Can anyone recommend a decent, strong workshop style tool chest safe supplier please, even consider good second hand options. The decent size ones, bigger than van safes, that can be bolted down with ground anchors. I'm in Kent btw. Thanks J.
  17. hi there, just something thats been buzzing around in my head, dont know what you think about this, but when chipping into a flat bed without sides, eg pick-up/trailer bed, always a messy operation. do you think it would be atall possible to affix a flexible pipework to the exit flue, with some sort of difuser at the exit, to direct the chips into the bed better? the obvious probs would be a jam of chips in the pipe, etc any thoughts or input appreciated. thanks J
  18. a long while ago...... took a fully equipped truck and chipper 40 miles to site, to re-pollard some big pops, then realised it was'nt fully equipped on arrival...as in no chainsaws! boss was far from happy, had to deliver us those saws, and made us saw for our lives with silkies! some stems about 6 inch dia, not too bad wood for a Hsaw, but it was a couple of hours before the Csaws arrived, i certainly knew i had pulled a saw!!
  19. haha nice one Dean! yeah, springers have the turning circle of a london cab eh! fast little blighters! Good luck with your timber choice and the summer house build...look forward to pics!! J
  20. that is a seriously nice bit of work, love those timber framed buildings. off thread now, why is the dog, 2nd pic down, at 45 degree angle!? sorry. J
  21. dont know if this is repeating, sorry if so, but i simply tie a running bowline around the stem, (below the flipline) cinch it tight, then have the friction hitch/device just after clipped into harness, it can then easily be tightened or slackened, dependant on stem diameter, and moved down as you move down.
  22. in approximately nine months from last night, i predict an explosion of very new arbtalk members....!
  23. Whilst working in Oz couple of years ago, I fully dislocated my right knee cap whilst in spikes, with a 066 hanging of my belt too, a nasty pop, followed by a warm crumbly sensation in the knee, very quickly followed by intense pain, and me screaming like a baby!! the whinging pomm banter stopped briefly too! very rare!! i wasnt too high up, about 25ft, just dismantled a big old Jarra, and was just chogging down the barrell, but without my life line just below my flip line, i would have been in a world of trouble decending! takes no time to whack a running bowline into your life line, too easy! knee recovered after 3 months out of the trees and some crazy intense physio, luckily no further dislocations, although i still have to wear a brace everyday now, just to strenghten.

    Paulownia

I cant imagine the re-growth unions would be particularly strong, due to the weight of the huge leaves, plus as said above, never really seen a biggie, they are usually always spanked hard at ground level every year, as they grow like stink and you get the funky big leaves. so i guess if regularly pollarded, may be a goer? sorry, not a great deal of help there really! but my few pence worth anyway. good luck.
  25. 562 i think!
