  1. You cant have a competition because i would enter my mothers sloe gin which would win hands down.......(he says throwing down the gauntlet...) Each berry should be pricked with a hawthorn thorn really, and ideally the gin should be left for years adding gin/ sugar as necessary, the end result ho[pefully being a sweet almost syrupy liquid that is mighty strong!
  2. Gradually getting the post count down........a mere 368,526824 posts left to read.....
  3. Thanks for the replies guys- i think i have it covered now.
  4. I think that is basically the whole point- the whole lot is bitter as hell anyway (i tried it) due to the high alkaloid content i would assume, so like i say, you would have to be pretty determined to eat enough to kill you, and i reckon you would be puking long before a fatal dose.
  5. what on earth are you on about Rob?? Thats just crazy speak, paying chikldren and what have you. My plan was 50p/hour and he can forage for his dinner.
  6. This may be worth thinking about- you have to go a long way and be pretty determined to poison yourself with yew, and the fleshy bits of the seeds are non toxic anyway... Effect on humans Fifty to one hundred grams of chopped leaves is considered fatal to adults. A world-wide investigation in 1998 (Krenzelok et al.) shows 11,197 records of yew poisoning (from all Taxus species) in humans (96.4% in children less than 12 years old) and found no deaths. A 1992 article in Forensic Science International (Van Ingen et al.) stated that only 10 authenticated cases of fatal human poisoning by T. baccata had been recorded in the previous 31 years, and that they were all deliberate. Krenzelok, E.P., Jacobsen, T.D. & Aronis, J. (1998) "Is the yew really poisonous to you?", Journal of Toxicology Clinical Toxicology, 36, 219-223. Van Ingen, G., Visser, R., Peltenburg, H., Van Der Ark, A.M. & Voortman, M. (1992) "Sudden unexpected death due to Taxus poisoning. A report of five cases, with review of the literature". Forensic Science International, 56, 81-87. (Copyright © Fred Hageneder 2005)

  13. Haha- i was really excited when that turned up- i have never bought a lorry load of softwood before, just a few sticks of hardwood here and there etc etc . and took loads of [pics, and a vid of it unloading (about 10 mins!!). Its from Euroforest if anyone was interested in knowing. We have about 3 8 wheelers running about down here as the roads and yards tend to be pretty small. i cant get an artic in my place. There are even 2 6 wheelers!!

  15. Just to say how nice it is to have arbtalk back after 10 days absence. Never thought i would miss it like that, and didnt realize how much until i got it back. Its so cool to sit chilled in my livng room and be able to ask questions and get an almost instant and wideranging answer on most topics, and also to be able to have a laugh with some really good guys whilst sitting in my living room chilling.
  16. Cheers steve- i put a bid in for the two and some of the other gear, but it was all sold as a job lot unfortunately.
  17. Bt fibre optic cables hidden on a bank was the best one i have found. They probably werent even hidden when the job was done!

  19. I am sure this has been covered, but i searched and couldnt find anything. I did what i think was the dirtiest job i have ever done yesterday- when i got home everything was foul. My distel on my sidestrop wouldnt move due to the filth etc etc and it was very very wet to boot. I have put in a crappy pic of my rope to show the difference in colour between the cleaner bit and the worst bit. My question is- best way to wash pls. I have never felt the need before, but now it has gone too far.
