  1. ive got the zing-it myself and its really nice, throws nicely and flakes well, i had a go on the liros stuff at the frjones arb event, that was good too. i paid 22 quid for my zing-it
  2. hehe but do you use ancient saws? i seen that new husky you bought at the fr jones show. also im sure you secure your load properly in the back of the ldv.
  3. im all for good honest firms starting up, ive seen a few with nice brand spankers vans and chippers, but i also see a lot of shoddy looking firms with old old gear and a ancient transit without even so much as a greedy board, london is like a mecca for bad tree surgeons, but theres also good ones out there.
  4. just dont fancy it coming out and me going WHACK! into the trunk
  5. yay! hehe finally im getting a years contract out of my boss, after 1 year on capel manors apprenticeship scheme, and hes also going to put me through my cs39! im so chuffed, well worth all the cruddy days and the low pay hehe, im also getting days as a climber when other people have days off now. so happy!
  6. i would love the ride just dont fancy trying to make accurate cuts with a tiny bar hehe, mine are bad enough with the right sized bar hahaha.
  7. yeah its filmed out in vancouver british columbia in canada, theres a lot of heli-logging that goes on out there because of the inaccessable terrain, ive not topped anything over 12 inches across haha, and they do 40 inch tops with a 16 inch bar.
  8. i watched heli loggers myself they actually talked about the techniques used to climb big trees, for about 5 seconds, they use the single rope climbing system, using a tautline hitch! oldskool man.
  9. i have just completed my first 12 months in the industry recently, i entered with no background in treework or forestry and enrolled on an apprenticeship scheme, it wasn't easy to get on i had to work hard to get a company to take me on even though they didn't have to pay any fees because i was government funded. luckily i found someone to take me on, a guy with a small company of 3 teams and its been great from there, i've learnt the safe side of the industry and new techniques at college and the realworld experience that is so important at work. In 12 months i have gained my CS30 CS38 PA1 PA6 and doing my CS31 this month, i will also gain an NVQ level 2 award and have gained 3 key skills level 1 qualifications.
  10. i use a gomtaro with a sawpod its great on small fruit trees etc. and with a sharp blade will still eat through 4 inch diameter branches and stuff, i prefer the straight blades to the curves ones as i like to use it for felling cuts on some stuff and it keeps a better hinge.
  11. definately gonna be there again but i think the climbing comp will be harder to place well in hopefully i will be a bit faster by then im well looking forward to the next one now kudos to you justin for setting it all up mate.
  12. wow i feel great having placed at 10th my first ever comp climb and considering ive only been climbing trees for about 8 months now not bad at all. thanks to justin for the prizes for the throwline comp, ive already been using the sawpod at work
  13. why not remove the crown and leave as a standing stem or with just a few poles. that way your removing the weight and the sail effect on the tree but keeping a very nice habitat for all the beasties.
  14. my first thought was great cleanup they left half the chip on site
  15. mr bullman won both days in the end, rich rule coming a valiant second, and i got some prizes for taking part haha i was the winner and only competitor in the throwline today so i got some goodies
  16. couldnt tell it had ivy all over the crown and trunk, but the leaves and branches looked in good health not much deadwood, no leaf miner either which is unusual, ive looked at more pictures and its definately an ohio buckeye the conker looks identical.
  17. on small reductions definately, anything under half inch gets secateured.
  18. from what ive just looked at on google it looks like a ohio buckeye but its definately not aesculus indica, thanks for the help ty
  19. i couldnt get any im afraid :\ bad form i know, i just hope my explanation is up to scratch, to reiterate it was different from a normal conker because. It was brown all over. It was more elongated than a normal conker which is usually spherical. had almost no spines and the ones it did have were really just lumps. the casing of the conker was a lot softer and more pliable than a normal conker. and the kernel inside was brown and bright white, with clean lines, not mottled at all.
  20. basically it looked exactly the same as a horse chestnut but the fruit was different, it was similar but was brown, with almost no spines, softer than a usual conker, and the kernel inside was white and brown as opposed to the usual all brown conker. i have a feeling it is just a different variety of horse chestnut, but other than that i havent a clue, all the conkers on the tree were the same too.
  21. im terrible for forgetting kit, in the 11 months ive been working on my apprenticeship, ive forgotten. Combi can. Ladders. Longarm. Rake. silky. hedgetrimmers (forget to take em to the job) and my biggest mishap, not taking the handbrake off the chipper, hmm whats that burning smell ooooops, luckily all was fine after a bit of smoke.
  22. being an apprentice myself i have to agree with john, it suits me much more than the ND arb kind of courses, i have gotten my CS 30, 38 and PA 1/6 so far in 11 months, waiting on my 31 dates, and may well fit in my 39 if im lucky. alltogether i think its a great way to learn, also i have learnt things at work that you will never learn at college, like the customer side of things and little tricks to make jobs easier. but the there are people on the apprenticeship who have achieved hardly anything, because they simply dont put the effort in, i think on any course you have to be motivated to want those qualifications to make a way for yourself in this career.
  23. LiveLeak.com - Catapulted from a Tree this swing looks bloody scary, wouldnt like to go through that one myself.
  24. nice one eddie congrats m8.
  25. works fine for me justin i would love to come but i dont drive and tfl says its a 3 hour journey 1 way
