  1. are you all talking about the depth gauge and drive link guard system? we use the oregon version and ive never used anything else, but i can really notice the difference in vibes when you take the gepth gauges down completely as opposed to just setting them to the cutters.
  2. for only having been in arboriculture for 6 months on a theory based course, i say well done to you m8. getting private work isnt easy, at 6 months in i wasnt great either i was having real problems with my felling cuts, but im a year and a half in now, and im really finding my feet, so im sure it will be the same for you if you have regular work and practice.
  3. just wondering, how are the facilities and equipment there? was that horse chesnut your very first fell?
  4. what college are you at jack?
  5. the fell wasnt that good, but it went the right way and you were still alive at the end, when i was first training i had a few shockers, you have to go through that, it takes time and regular felling to get your eye in. just one tip too, it looks like you nibbled the hell out of the gob, so angles arent meeting up perfectly, i try to get my first cuts as accurate as possible, think twice cut once, the accuracy also helps the tree leave the stump cleanly.
  6. simple but effective woodpicker i like the simple kits the best, whoopie sling, large crab with a munter hitch. or a flying capstan, 1 long lowering rope, 1 short, a large pulley, i like the ones with a spliced tail for snatching. 3 steel 3way biners, and 2 slings.
  7. Finally its been arranged, first my college were going to do free training for it then my boss had to pay for the assessment, then half price, then 10% off lol, then they said over 20% off which my boss went for. got the cheques off him today hehe, result. so anybody got any experience of what the assessment is like,II never did the nptc training with my other courses, we were instructed by my tutor on the apprenticeship, but I found the assessments easy enough, only got a few minors on my cs30/31. all the guys at work have said oh its easy blah blah, but you never can tell.
  8. ouch doesnt look very pleasant.
  9. i find the petzl headbands super irritating, my stein is nice and comfy, and not much hotter than a petzl vertex.
  10. i have it with the stihl peltor ear defenders and mesh visor its good, i didnt fancy the top gun style visor either, only thing i would say is ive broken the mesh visor in the same place twice over 6 months, but just superglued it on and its fine.
  11. me too mate but ill get it in the ear for weeks after
  12. ive used the 260's, the 361 and a 65, of all of em i just love the ms361 for allround useability, its a nice inbetweener saw and it still has punch with a 24 inch bar on it, i found the 260's a bit lacking in power when trying to log up bigger bits, or on harder wood.
  13. noooooooo i cant come!!! i have a date clash, got to go to my girlfriends sister birthday party! if i dont im in the doghouse. have fun without me ! lol
  14. bobby beginners is no worries, ive just got my tickets but im sure everyone will be more than happy to help you out and get you branchwalking when i went to the fr jones show the guys from lantra were very inviting and helped me figure out what SRT was all about. yeah i know tunbridge wells is far away but didnt no if NFSS was just passing through there on the way down.
  15. they got some lovely climbing trees up there, i had a go on the comp oak which was cool, i really hope they set up a zipline, they did something similar to demo speedlining at the show.
  16. do you mean tonbridge? not tunbridge wells, i can get to tonbridge easily as thats how i got down to kingswood for the fr jones show what time do you reckon you will be passing through ive already pm'd rich and justin.
  17. ill try and make it depending on if i can scrounge a lift with anyone.
  18. capel manor in enfield have got 39 course running this month and next.
  19. would be nice to have one within public transport distance of the big smoke for us students/trainees.
  20. i think its all a matter of opinion, the 2 other climbers at the company i work for 1 hand and cut and hold, 1 has been climbing for 2 and a half years the other has been climbing for 7. now i myself have come into it green as green can be, ive learnt the college way, and the work way, and im having to develope my own style inbetween, i dont climb like the other guys because i feel its unsafe, i try to use 2 hands whenever possible, and if i do 1 hand it i always make sure to check the followthrough of the saw and avoid anything which the nose of the bar could kickback off, i very very rarely cut and hold, and usually that is only light stubs when there is a target underneath. i think if we are talking about someone with 30 years experience, they are coming from a time when H&S was almost non existant, my boss climbs like these guys, and hes a badass climber, to my college eyes it looks scary as hell, but he knows what hes doing and he does it well, i think its the climbers decision at the end of the day, but i would always say keep 1 handing to a minimum, and try to never cut and hold.
  21. check TPO/conservation area, then if its all good get the client to contact said housing association to apply for works, and you put in your qoute, if you get it jobs a goodun.
  22. cheers for the fix david.
  23. Some photos of a reduction i did last week, no befores im afraid, 20%er over 3 gardens and 2 sheds underneath, my biggest reduction ive done so far and i was well pleased with the shape, couldnt do much with regards to growthpoints on the top as its a lime, you can see on the 3rd photo theres quite a big bit of deadwood at the bottom, the cavity went up to about 10 foot, could tell from the old branch removal cavities. bloody sideways pics, cant do nuffin with em lol. .
  24. when the local tree gangs get there shirts off at the first ray of sunshine.
  25. pretty cool sounds and i love the end. LiveLeak.com - Tree Branch Falls On Power Lines
