  1. don't be sorry, I think we are in agreement!
  2. There is a knurled focussing knob at one end with a slit in it. Look through the slit and you can see the numbered dial. If you hold it horizontally it will read zero. As you tilt upwards and downwards, the dial rotates. Is there a percentage scale on that model? To get a height reading for your tree, you first need to know your distance from the tree, so wheel out from the bottom of the tree about 20m or 30m. A nice round figure anyway. We'll use 30m in the example below... Look through the slot with one eye and look at the tree with the other eye. Line up the horizontal line inside the suunto with the top of the tree. Take the reading off the scale. The tree height is the wheeled distance multiplied by the percentage. so 70% would be 21m (i.e. 30 x 0.7 = 21m). Geddit? This is a simple explanation, there are adjustment figures for if you are sighting up hill or down hill. There is a user manual available.
  3. yeah it was a rhetorical question
  4. As we all know, the value of timber can't cover the cost of running a professional tree team equipped with rigging/winching gear, climbing gear, serviced saws, vehicles and chippers/stump grinder, insurance etc etc. I wonder if this guy would be interested in taking down a big dangerous roadside tree?
  5. It says that insufficient evidence has been provided to support the application, and that the disease doesn't necessarily kill the tree. The problem is that the tree has a relatively strong lean towards the house and would demolish the roof in the event of a catastrophic failure, as has happened to the next-door neighbour with a similarly diseased tree.
  6. Ha!, Just had a TPO application turned down to fell two Horse chestnuts that have been topped in the past (18inch diameter flat tops), are showing decayed heartwood and have an infection of pseudomonas (bleeding canker). They're in a mixed shelter belt of oak, sycamore, ash, lime and chestnut, which runs along the back of some houses and down to open fields. Can somebody direct me to the legislation re: dead/diseased/dangerous please? Pics to follow
  7. I like the way you do pruning cuts, even though it's a dismantle Looks like a well thought out and executed job, thanks for sharing.
  8. I've got a 300 Dyna. Brilliant truck, great turning circle. Carries weight without looking loaded. Its for sale if anybody is interested!
  9. Ah, I suspected that might be the answer. Seems there may be a way around it, thanks agrimog. The vehicle is the new Isuzu N35.150 (Euro6). Having said all that, I might be buying an older vehicle without these complications. Thanks for the input, food for thought.
  10. A new truck I'm considering uses Adblue additive, which is basically a urea solution injected in controlled amounts by the vehicle into the exhaust, upsteam of the catalytic convertor. The urea and the cat convert the NOx in the exhaust gasses into nitrogen and water. Great idea. My question is...what happens if I don't use the additive, like say I run out, or get tired of buying the stuff
  11. don't buy a second hand harness, you never know if it's been shock loaded.
  12. the national trust video has been pulled from Youtube, fishy
  13. Maybe they flicked through Shigo to the stub cuts page and thought that was the way to go.
  14. Can't you get the 660 anymore?
  15. another duff Stihl chainsaw...surely not. After the debacle with the 201, and then the 261 bending cranks. Anything ending with a 1 seems cursed.
  16. still loving mine, but only been using it 3 weeks, I'll let you know in another 13 weeks!
  17. My 201 had a new carb, pot and piston and still won't run properly. I hate the thing. Stihl are putting it on test currently. I just hope it comes back different. On a positive note, I'm really pleased with the new MS461. Nice powerful saw with a solid feel.
  18. 'woodlands' by Oliver Rackham, and 'In the danger zone' by stefan gates
  19. half cut is what you'll be if you turn up half cut....geddit? I'll get me coat
  20. I've struggled with a 201 for 12 months, the dealership has seen it four times, replaced the carb and replaced the pot and piston, and has now sent it back to stihl for testing. grrr. needless to say I won't be buying another one.
  21. 40 parts sap makes one part syrup, that's why it's so expensive, even in canada.
  22. I think you can all guess my opinion on the subject!
  23. .....
  24. Quoted £545 incl today from local dealership with great service.
  25. A friend of mine did some abseiling down a rock face and used a kango hammer to knock off any loose rocks above a railway. He said it was good fun. I think he was getting paid, it wasn't just for the hell of it. He's not a terrorist.
