    I'm still making making mistakes after 20 years, and still learning.

    The ability to listen to what is being asked of you. Every person you will work for will have a different methodology, and you need to be able to fit into that methodology. At the moment all of the people who are cutting for me came with little or no forestry experience, but they all have enthusiasm to learn. They are now at the point where i don't need to worry or check up on them as i know they are doing a good job. I like people asking lots of questions, and learning from there mistakes. When something goes wrong i always ask why, and get them to talk it through. I hate to say it, but we only learn from our mistakes.

    Green Elf Cup, this is the first time that i have seen the fruiting body, albeit very tiny.

    Jacking over a backing leaning spruce. I can tell that i have been spending too much time in my machinery, there is a definite belly overhang.

    Finally the last 4 windblow. It's proving tricky manoeuvring amongst all the wobbly stumps.

    Diggers around this size are phenomenal with what they will lift and pull, and as light a footprint as the log bullet.

    I think my belt combo, has cost around £20 from various car booties, and is about 10 years old. The Husky one might be good, but i don't think it will last as long as mine.

    I hadn't cut enough of the wood underneath because of access. That caused the wood fibers to rip and snatch the saw, driving it into the ground. Bugger

    After 2 days of being piss wet in the wind blow from hell, this was the final straw.

    After 30 years , i have learned to see through the crud, so that i don't notice it anymore.

    That looks like an ideal woodland for me, but you are too far away. There must be some lower impact forestry contractors in your area. Toby at Say it with wood is not too far from you.

    There is no right or wrong, all of the above machines have there strengths and weakness, you will have to adapt your work practices to suit their strengths. No one machine will do everything. Small forwarders are nimble, i haven't needed my winch since I've had the log bullet, but are no good over long distances. Tractors and forwarders are much quicker, carry alot more, but are a royal pain in the arse to manoeuvre amongst trees.

    I really like my tree shear, but.......... It is finding the right material to cut and that is within reach of the digger. Having some form of rota makes life so much easier, but they are very expensive and heavy which greatly reduces the amount you can lift

    I have no idea why the price dropped, given that the mill only sources timber within 50 miles, so international fluctuations shouldn't affect the price. Thankfully the owner is happy despite the price drop.

    My equipment is lighter weight, easier to move( I can mover it all myself), and doesn't use large amounts of fuel. Experience to know that i can make this site work despite saw logs nearly halving in value in the last year. Lastly a good bunch of reliable sub contractors with a good work ethic.

    I generate my own work, and use MWMAC to register the courses. At the moment I run 4-6 courses a year, because i am so busy. Once i get abit more decrepit i will increase the amount of training. I could probably generate enough training work to keep me busy full time, but i am enjoying felling and climbing, and i enjoy the variety. Yes it is worth pursuing, but not many are cut out to be trainers. Give me a tinkle if you want 07966792798

    You will have a days verification to see if you have the required knowledge and skills. You need a teaching qualification (PTLLS), H&S qualification (IOSH), and then a week long standard setting course. I think it took me about 18 months. It costs a lot!
