  1. hi andy how is you system working. looking to try to get a system similar.where did u get it from? any one else got systems they recommend that dont break the bank.
  2. when theres nowt behind you so you can been seen in the distance before someone runs up your ass. soons somone is behind you switch em off. sodding things are blinding. I normally feel like giving em full beam see how they like it!
  3. suppose I thought why tempt fate but hey.
  4. yes. The manual for the new saw will state this. Think from memory 4 fills is the run in period with stihl.
  5. funny how it turns around isn't it. you got plenty on? we are 3 month in advance and regulars booked in later.
  6. probably going over old ground here but.. pollarding was trditionally carried out at the hgeight of summer to feed livestock when there was less nutrient in grass. We then thought what a cool way to control growth. problem is 1st time you do it, it checks root dev. but studies were carried in London on plane trees and clay soils- after 2nd or 3rd time root systems accellorated their growth and then theres a problem with buildings etc. If you enter into a pollard regime and you stop then decay sets in in those pollard points, it could turn into legal cases eg. plenty of cases in the past re failure of pollard points on L.A street trees. Dont like em. but seen plenty and sometimes thet can be sculpure-esk.
  7. he didn't say but I tried to get my trainee on it but he's too old to qualify. must be under 19. which is pretty difficult to suss out what you want to do till you are over that age-ish.
  8. adam, just want to educate. got plenty of work. I am looking at longer term maybe teaching or helping the barony with modern apprenticeships. Get frustrated at times that we have no forums in scotland for us arbies to invest knowledge into colleagues.too big a task for just me, me thinks.
  9. any young arborist under 19 could do this. if you are in scotland contact the Barony college. problem is you must be under 19. anyone interested?
  10. you are right Dan. Nptc's and qualifications are good but coupled with a modern apprenticeship, well now we're talking. I have no vacancy at present but you will get something. The employers benefits are they get a bod with a brain, that is going to get loads of nptc's for free. Downside is howlong are you going to stay? good luck
  11. Barony and clakes are doing it and Id like to get involved with the forums if there is a demand (which I hope there is) cheers Adam.
  12. This will be run as an isa comp.with try before you buy and hopefully forums. The comp and the try before you buy are definate.
  13. Youve got a sequioa to climb at geilston.
  14. not good, jealousy is a bastard. report it to the cops. dont give up.get security or cant you get a local farmer to rent you space to secure your gear?
  15. ILA do funding at £250.00 year
  16. You may be able to get your man on a modern appreticeship. He'll ba able to get nptc's for a registration fee. Does your local college run arb courses. Our local college does, the course would be evidence based with nptc training and assessment. There is a max age of 19 on it. The only thing it costs you is being without your groundie when hes doing his nptc training/assessments.
  17. Close family friend was killed by tree falling on their car on awindy night. I was doing my hort apprenticeship at the time and I decided to make a difference. 20 yrs later I still enjoy getting up every morning to go out and deal with a new tree challenge.
  18. Ive maybe been taken out of context. Yes we all need to be competant to a level but we shouldn't sit back on our laurels once we earn the nptc certs nor should we rely on them to prove our worth in adverts for the public to be confused about what nptc certification actually means. Im not knocking the system but highlighting the fact that they are a stepping stone to learning the trade through further education/experience. There are individuals out there who dont care about what they do, they just earn the pennies. Arb is a lifestyle not a fast buck.
  19. Hi Guys looking to attract climbers to a comp. thats in its early stages to the Barony college in dumfries and galloway in May '09. As a gauge of interest how many of you out there are interested. I would also hope to have various forums there including 1. Wildlife habitats in Arboriculture 2. Trees in conservation areas/ Tree preservation orders - the Scottish framework Any more ideas for forums. I know the list is enless but we have to start somewhere and try to build on it in the future. Id be interested to see what you think
  20. Well guys, you might think this is bad but our local authority contracted this work to the anon. contractor. The Authority carries out countless acts of professional vandalism on trees via there commercial services roads dept. Diggers putting drains next (within 1 metre of mature rootplate)--hmm wonder whats going to happen to the tree in question. All we seem to be able to do is shop them and have it held against us so they can say oh well we have plenty of trees. For how long?
  21. personally Im sick of seeing NPTC qualified. Means you are competant only. Experience and underpinning knowledge is all
  22. I keep my mobile phone in a zipped bag that either fits on my belt loop or my climbing harness. Got it in France but its brilliant. keeps the phone clean and dry and less likelihood of falling on the leg pocket.
  23. Reckon you could be on the right track. Im also a cynical 0ld git that's been around and seen all the promises but to no avail.
  24. Whats new. Either the powers that b rush things through half arsed and leave them a sod to manage or they just shelf them for a bit due to 'more important matters'
  25. timerland pros have better grip in wet whether, not that tredders or doug will have u out much in the wet.
