  2. Vito & Sprinter share same engine/box. They both weigh in around 2ton empty, depending on model & spec. Vito about 100kg less - ish. In the 3/3.5ton weight class they both can tow 2ton. Apparently there's mods/upgrades that let the Vito tow 500kg more weight, according to mercedes. But the 5ton sprinters can tow more, when upgraded from standard. Does anyone run either? Would be interested to know how easy they are to service/fix & relative economy's ie, parts & mpg? Thinking of camper/day van use, thanks Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. There's a lot of good work going on in the woods there generally, nice to see care, attention & funding given to places. Not sure on the chip species TBH Mr H, may have been specific species brought in & tipped there(roseaceae?) or simply whatever was at hand. It did look fresh within a week or so tho. Like the artwork, the secondary regen could have been left out at the time. Interesting to see it looks like it had lost its leader even then & shows today a great amount of lower growth/retrenchment. Good find too. Great day today, busy doing other things myself but thought it might inspire a trip out for folk. This clamping - not sure what to call it - was worth a pic as well. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Went to Sherwood Forest last weekend. Been freshly mulched, and halo'd - coppard stumps at front of first pic. Fence round keeps compaction minimal. Couldn't see much die back at all. Good to see it in rude health, for such an old tree. Been lavished with care through the years it has. I did hear recently that mulching may not be the best thing for an old tree as it could promote too much vigorous growth, when really at this age it just needs to 'tick over'. Any other schools of thought? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. What wood is it? I've had van loads of apple in the past that mostly stayed in tact, & still is if it's been kept dry. And ash... which can be relied on to split & move, but hollowed has been fine. I still got a lump looks like slimer of ghostbusters, been down 6 - 8 years & not split. Last summer it had an ash seedling growing inside his mouth, I thought was fitting. & he's been outside all the time. Funny lump tho not just a tube, although the others were. 8. I'm in a 4 man team, we usually access with SRT then change over to DdRT. Then get the ascenders, hitch etc lowered back down so its ready to go if needed. If we don't choose SRT for access on a tree, we will get a secondary line(DdRT) installed on a fork below the climbers TIP/main anchor as soon as they're up there. It's never been needed yet but it's a good thing to have in place, far more useful than having a harness on when working on the ground but no line installed... Although on occasion we have set a harness up ready to go on the 2nd line, all tied on as a potential timesaver. Trust is a biggy in an emergency, but the one thing you can't practice is how you would react when your mate's screaming & blood is everywhere. I've been there with a couple of minor ones in the past, a silky cut & chainsaw 'kiss' and I know I was far better equipped mentally to react properly & sort it the second time round. It took the reality of the first one though to make me know what to expect - & more importantly to make myself KNOW how to react if it happened again. Bottom line: A bit of planning & practice stops the headless chicken performance in an emergency. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. Hi Mark hope you keeping well. We must have been slacking that day... Cos we should have warmed your Irn-Bru thru for you :-) All the best, Conrad Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  11. There's a good article in Arbclimber mag issue 3, about some tests done on ascenders cutting through rope when dynamically loaded. Rope route is key. If any part of the route crotches or forks were to fail & a fall of 1 metre + result, then tests showed not just de-sheathing but severing the rope. So if your hitch back-up wasn't ABOVE the top ascender you could be in trouble. Innovation is good. Going home at the end of the day is even better... 12. That's the one; joint event leading to greater footfall & more exhibitors. Might go a good way to putting this event back in peoples calender. If Capel pull out the stops on organising it in good time & getting exhibitors back/more to commit to it & Publicise this, then they stand a chance of it picking up. If they don't remedy anything it's probably not going to survive. It was a bad move half filling 2 fields which looks to have lead many not to bother this time round. I've only been to the last 2 however, but I do see that they have the arena to make a great show & it would be a shame if it became one of the ones 'back in the day'.
  13. Congratulations Nick, a fine result, worth the effort. Well done

  15. Cheers Ray, will give that a go. Also would that have been cause of lack of power do you reckon? Or just disturbed on the strip down? Thanks, Conrad Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. Hi gents, could do with picking your brains please.. We got a ms261 that lacks power on anything over 4inch. Thought rings maybe? But took carb off to clean first to see if that helped as it didn't need to warm up to be gutless. Seemed quite clean, so put it back together. But it now keeps compound flooding the crankcase. Keep taking plug out & TDC & invert with throttle open to drain out top of carb but it keeps filling up! Been a few days now to see if it'll evaporate after draining to see if it'll start, after emptying, but couple of times it's been pulled fuel has come out of de-compressor. So was wondering what to do to get it to start? Thanks in advance Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. Good one. It's got a fighting chance. William Barron & sons used to move trees in the 1850's, upright & horse drawn with his tree moving machine & 6 man team, of which a replica is now at Kew. Tale is of his biggest triumph doing this(amongst many others) is of windows being smashed as he moved a 48ft cedar of Lebanon through the streets of derby "!" Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. This roadside sycamore(un reduced) was hollow, you could look down in the cavity on the stem & see daylight at the buttresses. IIRC the picus showed less than than 80/20 t/r. With the buttress issues as well the call on the day was...... ...monolith just above cavity. Shame I didn't get pics of the picus on screen, it was an RFS outing to demo it's capabilities amongst other things. It showed a big black shadow, & it was nice to be able to 'calibrate' this with looking inside the trunk. I wouldn't want my kids playing out in the wind at that nursery, yet :-o . 20. I started on a forestry course at Riseholme college in 97, some of the modules I was into got dropped 2 weeks in. I'd met some guys at the college who were on a 12 week arb course who were working in forestry & arb then spending a day a week to get their tickets there. They said come on the arb course it's a lot more fun than forestry, & better £££'s. So I jumped courses to the ND, as couldn't do the 12 weeker - as no experience. & I never looked back! Knew it just fitted for me. If it's right for you & you work (HARD) at it, it'll work out. All the best, Conrad:thumbup: edit; I'd previously trained as a mechanic/welder but soon found I preferred working outdoors. Skills always useful tho

  22. Charlie, whilst your motives seem sound in preserving the trees under your care, the question must be asked - have you any experience at all in cutting trees? With what you have described & going off squinting at a couple of snaps, if you havnt a lot then this really isn't the tree to be avin a go at. Cutting wood(ESP ash) can be unpredictable & there are a lot of forces involved that you need to be aware of. It takes time, experience, teaching & instruction to do this with no damage to others, yourself, the tree & your equipment/property. With respect. For your own & loved ones sake, please wise up & call a pro.
  23. Don't know of 10 but kiwi Owen would be up there & Greg love , & that fine feller of 70+ that still competes in pole climbs !
  24. Used to see this on a mot station wall in balby, nicely written on a little wooden plack. In life there are only 2 things to worry about. You are either well, or you are not. If you are well, you have nothing to worry about. If you are not, then you only have 2 things to worry about. You will either get better, or you will not. If you get better, you have nothing to worry about. If you do not, you have only 2 things to worry about. You will either live, or you will die. If you live, you have nothing to worry about. If you die, then you only have 2 things to worry about. You will either go to heaven, or you will go to hell. If you go to heaven, you will have nothing to worry about. If you go to hell, you'll be so damn busy catching up with friends, that you won't have time to worry!
  25. I did a bit of sub contracting in London a few years back, we used to get a dozen or 2 sheets of 8x4 ft correx & line the whole drag route, floor & walls up to 4ft high. It's the stuff for sale signs on houses are made of - nice & light, quick n easy to fit + re-usable dozens of times ... & cheap. Get the right masking tape so you don't peel paint or wallpaper when you pull it down. Jobs a good un:thumbup1:
