  1. There is a phrase in Spanish which goes something like... 'He perdido la pelota' It means... 'They have lost the ball' Stein ... according to this forum are putting out too much gear that breaks.... .......He perdido la pellota
  2. I use the long end for tall trees and the short end for small trees....Is this wrong?
  3. Actually the word ‘argument’ .. like many words in all languages can be used in different ways. It annoys me when I use it in the sense of no’s (2), (3), (4) or (5) and people take it as No (1). It’s happened to me several times on this forum, and frankly, it causes a major problem, as the written word is the only tool available to us here. It’s either ‘nitpicking’, or a lack of ability to understand English when someone clearly uses the word….. according to context… as (2), (3), (4) or (5) but is taken or quoted as no (1). It would be nice to get this one sorted, as I don’t want to shorten my vocabulary for the sake of others. ar·gu·ment  1. an oral disagreement; verbal opposition; contention; altercation: a violent argument. 2. a discussion involving differing points of view; debate: They were deeply involved in an argument about inflation. 3. a process of reasoning; series of reasons: I couldn't follow his argument. 4. a statement, reason, or fact for or against a point: This is a strong argument in favor of her theory. 5. an address or composition intended to convince or persuade; persuasive discourse.
  4. Just to add. It was possible without damaging the rubbers or the glass, and necessitated by a similar situation.
  5. This worked on my LDV. Rip the rubbers of the quarter light window on the door from the outside. You can then jiggle the window pane over and get yer hand in and open the door. With all the theft about perhaps a mod should delete this post as soon as you've read it:001_smile:
  6. Pics of white stuff. First just looks like sap. White stuff Looks kind of crystalline, in places, like in old branch wounds and is dotted around all over the trunk with more of it higher up:confused1:
  7. Heres one looking ill near me in Cheshire. Pics of white stuff to follow......One for the nerds I fear:001_smile:
  8. The beer can bodge. Normally I would use a baked bean can but I was concerned about the speed of the vehicle so went for lightweight ally:001_smile:
  9. Here's todays pic of me 'doing things'. These structures were built, by me, to demonstrate the effect of earthquakes on buildings in Japan. They now stand in a museum or some such place somewhere in Japan. If anyone ever goes and sees them they do have my 'tag' on them somewhere in weld.
  10. That's cool, I'll tell him he can come out from under the bed then:001_smile: never had a pigeon to eat, but the way things are work wise they may have to start looking out for my catapult:001_smile:
  11. Ta Mick, you would have been within your rights... by the way this is my cat when I showed him your post about zeroing sites on guns. He's sure you can't see him:001_smile: Just when Lee got it back on thread too:blushing:
  12. Some doors I made for a tree surgeon in NZ. I have over 7000 pics of me 'doing things' all over the world....This could be a long thread. It only remains for me to apologise to Mick for the double derail of his thread... So sorry about that Mick:001_smile:
  13. Thank you for the responses Skyhuck and David. I guess I've made my point so I'm not sure that it would be constructive to argue it further. People will make of it what they will. Except to say that I did consider the point you make about those who run the site David, before I entered into this. On balance I reckoned that posters and even viewers who don't post are the lifeblood of a forum. Views and hits etc. So I decided, rightly or wrongly to make my point anyway. The reason I don't contribute in other ways is because my spare funds and time go into a charity that I founded 10 years ago and run on my own. It raises money for Tibetan refugees in Nepal. I only mention this, as otherwise I might at least have donated money or bought raffle tickets etc.
  14. Now’s as good a time as any to post this little speech and I am not referring especially to Mr Blair here. There is a reason I have chosen now to take a stand. I strongly believe that this reason is important for internet forums in general. I’ve been around this forum for a while and a couple of others. I have observed that strong , thick skinned, bombastic types… eventually take over all forums. The more sensitive and often intelligent poster is barged out. The very nature of internet forums, is that all should be heard. The people I most want to hear are the pensive and, yes, intelligent, quieter types. Unfortunately they get pushed out by the rhinoceros skinned bullies. The bullies do this to cover up their own inadequacy, it is the nature of bullying. The irony is that we need the bullies too, if they did not feel threatened by the eloquent types, they would feel no need to bully as a defence mechanism. There is nothing to defend, the bullies are intelligent too, they just don’t always realize it. My inclination after I have been manipulated, misquoted, or otherwise had my opinion misrepresented is to leave. This is what a lot of intelligent and interesting people do…they leave. This plays into the hands of the bullies. I want to take a stand… the internet forum is not just for thick skinned, intransigent bullies. It will be a better place if some of the shrinking violets of this world are allowed to say their piece unmolested. This is the only reason I am still here, I don’t like being bullied. I don’t need to learn how to cut a tree off you lot, but I do enjoy a bit of a yarn about one of my areas of interest when there’s nothing much on the telly. For better or worse you lot are my lot. This does not mean that I think I am the type I describe, but I do want to hear their views on a regular basis on any forum.
  15. I wasn't happy about it last night. I let you off lightly for the sake of keeping the peace, and to give myself time to consider a measured response rather than flying off the handle at the time. I needed a cool down period, rather than a stewing over it period. I will however accept an apology if offered.

  17. Fair comment Geoff, that was a bit below the belt. My point is that he rather rudely questioned my competence. I am questioning this. I can probably field photographic evidence that I am better at doing things rather than just buying things. I think that we (Mr Blair and I) maybe have a different moral compass, or different values. I am deeply offended that my own values have been judged in this way. I am just using the same dirty techniques:001_smile:
  18. I let this go last night, but its bugging me that you got away with saying this. Would you care to explain how you can extrapolate that I am not good at doing things from my comments in this thread. I am quite good at doing things actually and its not me that ripped my hand doing tree work, I think that was you:001_smile:
  19. If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree. ~Jim Rohn:001_smile:
  20. Touche (touchay) Never judge a book by its cover.... Springs to mind:001_smile:
  21. The best form of defence is attack, aye , Mr Blair:001_smile:
  22. The reason I mention farmers sons is not just sour grapes as it may seem. Its about making the point that we are not all on a level playing field. Often people on this forum who I know to be from a farm background complain about unfair competition. That’s why I had a bit of a dig at farmers. There is a hidden cost in owning a chipper. Each time you tip the chip you lay down a pile, which cant be tipped on top of. You need to shove it all up into a pile occasionally . If you are not from a farm background you will need to rent a yard and get the use of a tractor or something to shove the chip into a pile. The PTO from the tractor makes log production quicker and more cost effective than doing by hand. That is why farmers sons who get these facilities laid on are at an advantage. I said ‘laid on’ not ‘free’ as circumstances will differ. My exact words are quoted below. “Yard and tractor with pto for logsplitter etc laid on and access to grants and benefits from the government “.
  23. This is an over reaction. I didn't say set up for life, I said "jump start" I do believe however that you should buy your own tractor with zero subsidy like I have to buy my own chipper with zero subsidy.
