  1. Fair enough mate you are getting the idea. Look at the business section and you'll find out about % overheads on turnover. Mine is fairly low at approx 40%, some of these guys do well to run at 70% overheads on turnover. It's a big problem for us.... people who are on a wage.. assuming that our price is our wage.
  2. Dave123. You should have been in the "home owners" bit to get less "general Chat" Hope you have been entertained and a little bit informed. I think you'll find that tree folk have a daily rate and that's that. Its swings and roundabouts. A big tree may look 'tarzan' but simple connies are difficult to estimate, and always take longer on the clean up...as you have observed. edit: posted same time as steve
  3. OK mate. I know you are time served yourself, so with respect, its me saying that then
  4. I did a job on me tod today which you lot would have taken 2 days over, took me 6 hours. I was literally walking like a cowboy out of a western afterwards... taken 4 stellas and half a bottle of Cab Sav to be able to move half normally again.
  5. Mike is making a point which I might have made somewhere else if he hadn’t made it here. My understanding is that he is trying to introduce some perspective. There has always been people that say I’ve been doing this 20 years and I don’t know nothing. It’s has the effect of making beginners believe that they could never reach a standard of worthiness till they did it for 20 years. I’ve done my 20 years and I say its not easy but as Andy C says it aint rocket science.
  6. I agree with Mike...that it's not that difficult I also agree with Swordsta... that it is quite highly skilled. Work that one out, while I pour another Cab Sav. I agree with Likeitorlumpit too even though I am an entrepreneur. I even agree with Mr Blair for once, ....I think:001_smile:
  7. And tattoos:001_smile: This could be onomatopoeia:001_smile:
  8. He's a giant bearded Kiwi with loads of guns:001_smile:
  9. I'm in this thread too much so will bow out in a bit. However. I've been meaning to say this for ages without the SAS bit. It is actually not that difficult so this is a good and valid point worthy of serious consideration. Well said.
  10. That's only because Rupe won the debate about whether we are skilled or not about 2 years ago on Arbtalk. I would still beg to differ on this one. Ding ding...round two:001_smile:
  11. I am not on minimum wage, far from it. I am an entrepeneur:001_smile:
  12. You're right, we all know the three months doesn't come in one lump. I'm being a bit metaphorical, or whatever:001_smile: I might get 4 days in Spain though, we live in hope:001_smile:
  13. I broke a newish chain on an 020 this week then today I hit barbed wire with my hedge cutter and bent the blade. I straightened it out and it works but it won't be the same. Must buy some 2 stroke oil too. This week is still gonna be an earner and I'm looking good for cold ones somewhere hot this winter:thumbup1:
  14. If you turnover nearly 2.5 k a week for say 40 weeks, that's 100k. This leaves 3 months of the year to sit on a beach in Goa sipping cold Kingfishers. (not that I actually go there with my time) But, yes there is a profit.
  15. Round here you'll get a fully equipped, professional, qualified, insured etc... experienced tree gang of 2 men for £450 max per day. I can't believe the prices some people get away with. This takes into account everything Josh and others have said about overheads.
  16. I already downloaded them mate, I'm just being stubborn and haven't read them yet. I'm concerned that when I look into it further it will be against my principles. I didn't get into tree work because I thought it was cool. I got into it because it's an honest days work for an honest days pay which doesn't include things like form filling and box ticking. I literally can't bring myself to do it. Credit to the AA though for making this stuff freely available.
  17. The ICI dude was on about, RAs, method statements, traffic management and on site induction courses etc. He was going on about all the perceived risks I face. I said ‘look mate’, I wanna chuck my gear over the fence, bosh the offending trees out, clear up the mess, then go home and sink a couple of cold ones’ I could hear his blood pressure rising. Perhaps he should put down stress management of ICI staff on his RA…. I think I said that to him too if I remember rightly.
  18. What will probably happen, is that I'll walk away as I'm not up for all the H&S stuff on principal. I refuse to jump through the hoops. I have to point out that this type of decision is coloured for me as I have an emigration application in (again). If I was staying here, would I jump through the hoops? I don't think I would as I think that as there is a principal at stake there is a stand to be taken.
  19. I do domestic in order to avoid payment problem, headaches. I'm trying to do a job for my local golf club, where I am a member, clearing their phone lines .... but...on land belonging to ICI. I am dealing with so much crap, that I can't get on site. I will take this as a hint and double my price:thumbup1:
  20. I may be a one man band but I'm not cheap:001_smile:
  21. You may have hit the nail on the head here. As a one man band, I do within reason what I like. As an employer, you are bound by this utter crap. This stuff will hurt productivity and safety. Because you have the associated costs, your team has to do more jobs,... working quicker than me and less safely.
  22. Treequip, I get that you are enjoying a civil debate about the use of ladders regs. So with due respect and nothing personal.... But who cares, the regs are bollocks:001_smile:
  23. Tree work can bite you in the arse Mr Walker. You being from a family firm you should know that. I can document 2 scenarios, one of which is quite common where cuts to the back of the leg can happen.. (later I may find the will to do the necessary typing) I don't get your final comment and see it as dangerous bravado. Second edit: I don't advocate any particular trouser by the way and see it as personal choice
