  1. I would be more concerned about possible root grafts with trees of the same species nearby. I have seen several cases of neighbouring trees unintentionally killed with glyphosate. Go to your chemical supplier and ask for a non systemic stump treatment.
  2. Thats a little bit harsh! It is never going to be entirely acurate that'sfor sure , but if you make adjusments to the guestimate for the variables (e.g. species, stage of life, past management etc.) Its not a bad starting point. To dismiss it as "utter c**p" is not fair on Gollum. Incidentally, has the circumference been measured?
  3. Sounds good.Could you PM me when this becomes available please?
  4. Very interesting Gerrit. I would like to read up on this. Can you point me in the direction of some references please? Thanks
  5. So such a response in trees is flawed? As producing a stress crop reaps no benefit. The tree would be better off producing less (but viable) seed?
  6. How about one of these? Its a digital game camera that can be strapped to a tree with passive infra red. About £100.
  7. Gerrit It seems a bit self-defeating that the oak would produce infertile acorns in response to stress. Is this down to producing a heavy crop with limited resources or is there some other mechanism at work? Other than planting and waiting for the seeds to germinate (or not) is there any other way of telling whether the cones will be infertile? Nice photos Gollum. Not a fungi I see very often.
  8. Holy smoke! Watch out for those barbed wire fences!
  9. I have been looking at boat hooks and fishing gaffs for just this need. Stein have kindly manufactured one. I will probably by one but I would like to inspect one first. Has anyone got one yet? Is it more robust than a telescopic aerial with a cup hook attached to the end?
  10. Thank you both for your input.
  11. Thanks Gerrit You have confirmed my fears. The tree(s) affected form an avenue and I am not aware of any treatment that could be applied to the stumps of infected trees to stop the spread to the other healthy trees. What would your recommendation be given this scenario? Note the avenue is within falling distance of permanently occupied buildings.
  12. Can you help me with the identification of these please (see attached photos)? Are they both P.schweinitzii? What is the significance of finding these on mature (40m tall) Sitka spruce? I am concerned because the trees these fruiting bodies were found on/by are growing close together with fused root systems? Is it therefore possible that the roots may have a greater extent of decay than might be detectable in the butt? http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k541/farinaceous1/Fungi_2.jpg
  13. You cannot go far wrong with scarpa boots! I have had several pairs from light treking to steel shanked ice climbing models and all have performed well. My only gripe is Vibram soles - Great in the dry but on wet wood or rock they tend to perform like ice skates!
  14. Cheers craig I'll try the strap under the other strap. atree - I have noticed that the spring isn't particularly strong and the rope does pop out fairly often but I put this down to it not sitting straight on my boot - due to the loose strap.
  15. Looks good. How much if you don't mind me aksing?
  16. I see deer man got you now. Ill try that. If that doesn't work Ill restictch it DrewB! I guess nobody else has this problem so it must just be me. I will have to take a closer look at why it is happening and try to work out what I am doing wrong. Cheers
  17. No its not the upper strap its the lower one that comes loose. This one
  18. How about the new scafell chainsaw trekker? You can even use your chainsaw whilst doing that arduous ice climb! The chainsaw protection will help keep your feet warm. They are a lovely colour too!
  19. Sorry i should have been clearer. I meant those that quote shipping charges on their websites and then add vat to it. Most sites shipping charges include the VAT. What really gets my goat is the massively inflated costs people charge for shipping to scotland (not the islands the mainland). I realise they just pass on the costs their carriers charge but still..........
  20. My pantin keeps coming loose when I climb. Its the strap that passes under the boot that loosens off and I end up with the pantin flopping around above my ankle. Has anyone else had this problem? I have tried stiching the tape together but this just came unstiched (i am not a seemstress obviously!). Have I got it set up wrong? Any fixes? Thanks
  21. I think it's a good idea and if the app is only a quid I am sure there will be a lot of takers and not just from people wishing to measure the hight of trees. Good luck with it. I will be sticking with my trusty suunto. Partly because of its reliability and speed and partly because I don't have an iphone or an ianything for that matter!
  22. How can you be sure it will be deadly accurate? A clinometer requires no batteries and is as accurate as ther person using it. Other posters have pointed out the pitfalls associated with apps ie incorrect readings (compass) and app stops working (previous post). How will your app improve on the reliability and accuracy of say a suunto clinometer?
  23. What bugs me is retailers that add VAT to their shipping charges..........Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
