  1. Can any tell me where I can get up to date information on the use of herbicides in Christmas tree stands. I have Forestry Commission Field Book 15 but I the content looks a bit out of date.
  2. A field maple that size is surely one for the Heritage Trees of England book! Have you been in contact with the Tree Register yet?
  3. Begs the question "how much?".
  4. You can talk! Whoah there yourself.
  5. I wonder if he needs any tree work doing?
  6. Well percentages went out with the 2010 BS3998 for just that reason (i.e. too much confusion over their interpretation). I hope you referred the person specifying them to the current British Standard. When I first started in this business there were only a few tree surgeons in my local Yellow Pages and now we have pages of them (and that's only the ones who choose to advertise with yellow pages). This industry is seen as an attractive option for people seeking a new career. I think the market will become even more saturated with the planned twenty percent defence cuts! I believe the only way to survive is to give a professional service and build a good reputation, such that you always have work through referrals and repeat business. But setting the price level correctly is something I struggle with on a job to job basis. I would certainly welcome any advice on how to get this correct.
  7. They should be dead by the time you rotovate so just rotovate them in. Break up any large clods with a fork and rake to a fine tilth. Any surface weeds/debris that get caught up in the rake can be disposed of. You will need to shuffle across the surface of the soil to flatten it then rake over once more before applying your seed.
  8. Lignum vitae seems rather an inappropriate name for it now!
  9. Here is a crusty old fossil found on a flowering cherry.
  10. Sorry Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted I'm afraid! was in reply to the above post.
  11. Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted I'm afraid!
  12. Did the customer ask them to use glyphosate?
  13. I think its going to be a goner. Compensate your client and most importantly learn from your mistake.
  14. I agree. But with all due respect, I was referring to the OPs tree not yours and he has some very good photos documenting the incident. The council is unlikely to be swayed by the ramblings of an internet forum but might just listen to an insurer backed with a professional report.
  15. I refer the OP to my learned poster Pommie. It is up to your insurer to fight your corner and for them to employ a qualified Arboricultural Consultant to assist with your claim. Whilst reading everyone's differing views on here might be entertaining it will not get you any nearer to reimbursement!
  16. Are you talking about "flying capstans" the lowering device or capstans in the true sense of the word i.e. devices for winching, hauling and lowering?
  17. Yes its Metasequoia glipstroboides. The change of colour of the cut wood surface from white to purple clinches the deal.
  18. Weeeeeeeeee! Thanks for that I needed cheering up.
  19. Bottom line for me is total cart price including shipping and VAT when making comparisons. If I come across a site that does not clearly indicate this total price, before any personal details are taken, I move on.
  20. Nice video but.... Surely a pair of spikes, a wire strop and cut and chuck would have this done in a day? In my opinion the zip line hindered progress (but maybe you just wanted to try one out?) Anyway, thank you for sharing a quality video. Keep them coming.
  21. Thanks again Gerrit I have a microscope. I have just never tried getting spores from old fungi. Looking forward to giving it a go.
  22. Thanks Gerrit What is the process for getting spores from these old fruit bodies?
