  6. i hear what you,re saying about the snow layers having added to the loading on the limbs..and shall be interested to hear your views once Rob has provided us with close ups.
  7. Rob moved at a much slower pace as he was documenting Tree species, leaf shape, size etc...Armed with his graph paper Zoom,Wide and Macro lenses he will have put together quite a collection of images!
  8. Yesterday for me was about meeting new people and i like to see how people like myself interactive with their enviroment. Although i was there to see great trees in a beautiful place in various states of Autumn colour, but my thread is about Characters and my two friends for the day were two very different people..Tony is Uber enthusiastic about Fungi and spends a lot of time in a position that is well suited to the examination and observation of these tiny organisms:thumbup1: As well as providing a much appreciated drop of Tea:thumbup:
  9. Rob had a couple of great lenses and after he has processed his 2,500 shots from the day, i know he took quite a lot of the tree...i am hoping he will add to the thread. either way,it is a very ominous site...something large has torn out dammaging smaller stuff on the way down...it was a very sad day when the women lost her life...as we were discussing those of us in the tree world have such a heightened awareness of noises relating to failure etc..cracks,creaks.....
  10. This Cedar has had a barrier put around it...and one large tear wound with two pruning cuts either side of it...we deduced that this could not have been predicted.
  11. i was amazed to read that now moving at a snails pace along the L.A streets...the shuttle once travelled at 17,000 mph!
  12. :confused1: Tony couldn,t think of it,s name...and he isn,t on here anymore to ask.... Whatever it is,it was my first find and it is a beauty:001_smile:
  13. Yes i was reading about that yesterday and posted a picture on my thread...what a shame and Goaty responded with what i also thought...why not just remove the wings? it doesn,t need them....
  14. Okay...i,ve just Googled Cyathus....those "eggs in a nest" looking type things:blushing:...yeah,they,re cute and Tony did carefuly collect them into a cup padded with tea bags to keep them safe as they were so delicate.....BUT, i thought you were refering to the last pictures i posted...Don,t you recognise it? Tony said it was extremely rare indeed!...Unseen before or something like that...look again David:001_rolleyes:
  15. David...Good Morning! you were missed. But you were there in Spirit:biggrin: Now that is a relevant comment considering the excitment it caused (especially from Hama). It was coming to the end of decent light and our 8 hour foray.. The lads were checking out something at the bottom of a tree when i saw this beautiful Bracket that was lit by the ever fading light..it was almost calling to me:001_rolleyes: "Tony" i shouted,"Fruiting body"...that was it...he was up the tree enthusing like i,d never heared him enthusing all day! he couldn,t stress enough the importance of this find...i couldn,t believe it...there were more pictures taken of this lonely specimin than anything else that day...i must admit that it got me hooked...and as you can see from the pictures it was a most wonderful find (And my first find!) so i hit Gold...David,even Tony was scratching his head as to it,s name...could you (In layman,s terms, elaborate on this fung please....Thanks.
  16. Will,i am in no doubt you will cope with whatever life (Or NZ) throws at you! you sound very determined and that determination is 75% of the battle..you have had the best training you could get...two years in Newcastle:thumbup1: because i come from Durham and Newcastle was my playground as a kid and it gave me the grit and strength to deal with anything..i will follow your progress with interest.....you are making the most of your life!
  17. Phew!....what an interesting day. I took about 400 pictures...Rob took 2,500:thumbup: it,s gonna take a day or so to sort through em so here,s a taster. Two great lads who are so enthusiastic about trees and Fungi and i enjoyed their company very much indeed:thumbup1: Full story tommorow once i,ve sifted through the images and condensed what was a very full day:001_smile:
  18. Very beautiful...liking the curved back.
  19. Great pictures and a fine landy chipper set up:thumbup1:....also curious as to why it wasn,t just felled:confused1:
  20. The space shuttle is taking it,s final journey to its resting place in a museum near LA...slowed down from 14,000 miles an hour to 2mph through the streets, apparantley hundereds of trees were cut down to allow it to pass through:thumbdown:....1,000 are to be re-planted:thumbup1:
